My wife's 8 Plus took another fall on Monday, cracking the screen all over the place, but taking out touch to half of the screen too. It's one thing to have cracks, but without touch you can't use it, turn it off, or back it up locally if needing a password. We had put a screen protector on it at one point, which might have held it together better and prevented the loss of touch, but it must have broke at some point.
This is the 3rd screen to crack, over 3.5 years. I have a feeling that the non-Apple ones just aren't as strong of a screen, and a little more likely to crack. This was a drop onto concrete, hitting one corner and then another, but with an ok case on it. We had a huge case on it at one point, for the 2nd screen and possibly the original. FWIW, previous smaller iPhones she had never had a problem, but I think due to the size and thickness differences they were just a different beast.
We're in that strange time period for iPhones where it just kinda sucks to buy one now instead of holding out a few more months. We looked at maybe getting an SE for her until the new ones come out, and then passing it on to the kids once she upgrades. That's probably still the best option, but since she wanted to get to the data and we'll want the phone in our fleet (several kids will need them in the near future) we decided to replace the screen.
But the other interesting thing was using an older iPhone for a couple days. We put her sim into a 5C, and it was just tiny in comparison. While that fit in our hands wonderfully, it also made anything that utilizes a big screen, pretty much most apps and web sites, hard to use. In comparison, the 8 Plus is nearly an iPad!
Remember to back up regularly, even if it's just photos. And remember that while these things are repairable, those tiny screws with multiple sizes and heads get annoying. And it doesn't help if still working on it at midnight, the kittens decide to jump onto the table and start checking things out.
Good luck out there.

My wife's 8 Plus took another fall on Monday, cracking the screen all over the place, but taking out touch to half of the screen too. Condolences; no mention of a case, would that have helped? It currently had the same type of case as mine, a somewhat minimal clear one that let through the beautiful red color of the iPhone (the read on the 8 Plus is a richer, deeper color than on my 11). But like I mentioned, a big bulky case also didn't protect it previously, and only made it bigger and bulkier, and harder to fit in a pocket. Unlike the big pockets I often have on jeans and shorts, it turns out lots of women's clothes have no pockets (hence the workout arm bands, or the interesting choice of shoving it down a sports bra or swimsuit top), or tiny pockets at least in the front. Rear pockets on shorts and jeans don't tend to be as deep, so when there the iPhone is normally half sticking out, waiting to fall. Anyways, sometimes it's good to have a slight setback, helping you enjoy what you have. And it's much better to have this be in the form of technology, instead of a health setback or something darker. Chinacat, I know you sometimes mention how big your hands are. Likewise here, I do ok with the 11, and have probably dropped it just a couple times in nearly 2 years. But, the same size iPhone in a much smaller hand, no matter the person, makes it a bit harder to hold on to. Maybe it's time to utilize some Velcro

I’m 6-6 and a bit over my usual 230 because my regular squash matches were eliminated by the pandemic until a few weeks ago, so my hands are probably bigger than average, but I can’t imagine why I mentioned it. I have always had regular-sized iPhones, though, for easy pocketability; my iPad and iMac provide larger screens when needed.

Anyways, it varies. We hear of people who constantly have trouble keeping a non-broken iPhone, but they generally left it on top of the car, put it through the washing machine, etc. In our case, there's something about the 8 Plus that has just made it have a lot more difficulties in not taking some hits, compared to the 5S and 4S we had before. It's working! Now i'm going to upgrade it's battery too, along with putting in a replacement gasket. It will be ready for another 3.5 years....or 6 months.

I don't know if there is such a thing as an average hand model. If the advertiser wants to make the product look small, they use a model with large hands, and if they want to make the product look big, they use a model with small hands. I use the "threat method" with my kids. I threaten them that if they break their iPhone, they will have to use an older model (like a 5S or a 6S that we have around) or shudder an Android (that I have a few of). So they keep their phones in good cases and they are as careful as possible. And it is absolutely true that women have it much more difficult than men ... I can't stand seeing them hold their phones under their arms while carrying packages due to the lack of a proper pocket. But they should at least put the phone in their bag which is over their shoulder! Right now, we have a few 5S models, one old SE, a few 6S, two 7, one 7+, two X, one XS, one 8, one 8+, and two new SE models. I think I have 7, maybe 8 lines at the moment. Oh, and one extra line for the device that is plugged into the minivan (tracker, vehicle health monitor, hotspot) that is never ever used. I'm not even sure if it is still functional! I think I may have traded in one of the 7 models for a new SE last year. I still use the 8+ because I like touch ID much more than Face ID, but I think I will have to bite the bullet and upgrade soon for a more powerful processor. And my eyes need a larger screen, so the SE won't do it for me. My older 3 kids are already used to FaceID and they use the two X and XS. The younger kids use various other ones from the collection as they please. One son uses 3 devices for his Madden football game! I do know that I constantly am buying accessories when I see good deals available. Portable battery chargers, cables, wall chargers, etc. There's also an assortment of macbooks, macbook pros (one 13", one 15.4"), and ipads here that need their own accessories.
