Meanwhile, in circular firing squad news, Reuters: EU & U.S. antitrust forces are gathering in Pittsburgh next weekThe PRC is likely LOL-ing at us shooting our own corporations in the foot. The PRC has high party officials on their companies' boards. In the US, we shake down our own companies. Very short-sighted.
I'd love to get Putin and Xi in a room after a few cocktails. They'd probably laugh their asses off at how we consistently do suicidal shit, so they can just sit back and laugh, rather than have to do anything overt to us (Never interfere with the enemy when he is in the process of destroying himself).
Our government should be *defending* our companies, not attacking them.
Again, elections have consequences. Even for those of you who (love to) hate DJT, you think the EU would try this kind of shakedown with Trump in office?
Again I ask, how did all that woke virtue signaling and supporting of Biden work out for you, Tim Apple?
The smells of US weakness and fragility are pungent all over the world.

FIFY, JD. Those two specific, politically-charged sentences aren't really needed to get your point across...they just make more, unnecessary work for the moderators.

Using the word' woke' is virtue signalling and an inane expression. 'Our' governments should be delivering good governance, and to govern means to regulate(yon doubt you're happy for the government to regulate which side of the road you drive on?). Yeah, absolutely, governments should not 'attack' companies. The only time a government might *defend* a company is to protect sovereign rights. Domestically the government should govern. I'll take Tim Apple's stewardship any day. Apple has a moral compass and AAPL is up.

Attacks on Apple are not restricted to one partyI cannot think of any other country whose politicians would attack its most successful tech companies. Everywhere else, as far as I know, governments protect their own. Not attack them. Strikes me as totally stupid. Samsung will be happy though. Re Lightning vs USB-C, I am trying to understand what advantage there is to Lightning. Anyone? Apple forces its customers to support both, depending on what product they own. Which is a major pain. Why is my iPad USB-C, and my new iphone Lightning?

JD's comments are indeed thoughtful. Why punish Apple, which is not a monopoly. Had never thought about it this way. including the comments about Putin and Xi.
Microsoft was (and still is in a way) virtually a monopoly with regard to government contracts in computer software. This is a giant business.

Re Lightning vs USB-C, I am trying to understand what advantage there is to Lightning. Anyone? Apple forces its customers to support both, depending on what product they own. Which is a major pain. Why is my iPad USB-C, and my new iphone Lightning? I was wondering the same thing, bugged that they didn't switch to usb-c all around this time, instead of leaving lightning on the low end iPad and the iPhones. The Lightning is a little slimmer and a little thinner, so that could be a reason on the iPhones. On the EU bill as a whole, it makes sense that Apple is against it, not so much for the reasoning now, but for future innovation. Apple likes to push the envelope a little, so I'm sure they would want to switch to something new if there were a good advantage for it. And then there's the theory about going wireless only. For wireless charging it currently at least on higher end phones seems to be the standard, though there's the whole normal/mid/fast charging with it and other charging types. At the same time, the overall standard seems to be having a USB based power adapter, which Apple has already stayed with for ages, and thus they already match the letter of the law. Personally, I try to use wireless charging when available, since I have slowly had the lightning ports get jammed with junk or even fail. We have one puck at home, and one built into an alarm clock. Various current cars have it as an option, so it's just down to what trim you get (a $20 charger likely isn't worth a $2k upgrade if that's the only thing you are after). In a different matter, with 4 relatively current iPhones and about to add another, I like the theory of doing the iOS updates on my computer in hopes that maybe I just have to do one download. Instead it likes to get rid of the upgrade file. There's probably a way around that, like pulling up terminal and getting the file before it is deleted, or even duplicating it while it is preparing to update. But without that, not only do you have to download it each time, but it turns out it's often double in size. I tested this out with iOS 15 today, where the computer wanted to download a 5.something gig file, whereas on my wife's 8+ it just wanted to download 2.3 gigs or something like that. Her iPhone is upgraded and backed up now, and ready to transfer over to the new iPhone tomorrow. And we even received our cheap clear case off of Amazon today, while she decides which one she really wants. And in completely different news, we had our first spammer from Brazil today. Most in the last 2 years have been from Thailand, posting about an online casino there. But today's was actually targeted, posting info about an iPhone 13. Careful out there. I asked Proboards a couple months ago if they had any suggestions for dealing with this kind of stuff, whether IP based or some sort of delay on new accounts. They had a couple ideas, but their main suggestion was to wait for the next major version release. We'll get there. Until then, watch for spam from brand new accounts. Thanks

As a frequent flier, I am not looking forward to the loss of a charging port. Using a magnetic charger on a plane is going to be really inconvenient.

As a frequent flier, I am not looking forward to the loss of a charging port. Using a magnetic charger on a plane is going to be really inconvenient. Maybe it never happens. If the current port is thin enough and water proof enough, in comparison to sizing needed for the iPhone as a whole (both parts like the battery and screen, but also look and especially feel), then what's the impetuous to delete it? A little cost, a sleeker look, and one less thing to fail? But the cost is minimal, it doesn't sound like most people have it as a failure point but if it does then it's the equivalent to portless, and though I like Apple's overall push to clean lines I really hope it can start considering functionality equal to or even a little higher than sleekness. But that's just me, wishing it was easier to add memory to or even upgrade the drive in more Macs. It's probably not happening on most portables, for a variety of reasons but mostly due to more integrated parts which make the whole device slimmer and lighter, but on all iMacs and Mac Minis I still have a little hope. That said, a year into my 27" iMac, I've yet to throw more memory into it.

I would say sticking my phone onto a charging block compared to connecting it to a charging block via a cable is roughly equivalent. And if connected to plane power, connecting a cable to the bottom of my phone is roughly the same as connecting a cable magnetically to the back of my phone.
