Likely lots of dramatic moves for the rest of the year. Buckle your seat belt! {green} AAPL was up just 30 cents to start. But going back to make sure it was still up a little, now it's up $2. Nice! On volatility, does anyone trade volatility in general? A neighbor from 12 years back said he did, but I don't know how. His feeling was the easy trade was to short volatility when it was high, and wait for it to drop. That's good in theory, but you can't trade the VIX index directly, and the ETFs for it (and the one for the shorting version) don't look ideal over the long or even middle timeframes, though might do ok on the day to day or even on a weekly trade. Just curious for now, though sometimes it's fun to try to make a little jingle when there is some moves in the market. And now over $3. Who needs to mess around with market volatility when AAPL treats long term investors so well? Thanks AAPL!

If I were a member of congress, I'd sponsor legislation banning speeches by Fed chairs.

If I were a member of congress, I'd sponsor legislation banning speechless by Fed chairs. I assume you mean speeches, and would prefer them to be speechless. finance.yahoo.com/video/fed-chair-powell-delivers-opening-154245948.htmlIt's not that negative to me, but rather saying where we are and what's on the wall of worry. Saying that to all, especially those that weren't as in tune with it, scares people a little. And not stating the plan of attack if things hit the worse side of expectations scares other people a little, wondering if they will try to do too little, or too much. Kinda like news of omicron coming out, especially on a low trading day into the weekend, whereas saying "It's not a huge worry but we are watching it, and we have no big changes planned currently" puts it in perspective. Oil is down decently in the last week, and our nearby Costco has dropped their prices by a dime to $3.49. Our local stations are still over $5, making most prices in Cali look low. It will come around, but change takes time. Except in WA, where there will soon be a 7% capital gains tax on gains over $250k, no matter if single or married. Now that's a change! And here I was thinking one day I might want to be lakefront somewhere in the state.

To the extent that the Fed is seen as starting to battle inflation it could be good for Apple — as long as the economy is still showing strong growth. Remember that the doldrums in the spring were a result of increased fears of inflation, which was seen as depressing valuations for growth stocks.

Just curious for now, though sometimes it's fun to try to make a little jingle when there is some moves in the market. And now over $3. Who needs to mess around with market volatility when AAPL treats long term investors so well? Thanks AAPL! I dabbled in VIX options in 2020 when the pandemic hit. Exactly as you say, the play was to enter when VIX was high, because it has to come back down eventually. If I remember correctly, I would buy bear put spreads (BEPS) that would payoff if the VIX dropped below the outer (lower, short) strike by expiration. As an example, VIX now is 27. You could buy the Jan19 19/18 BEPS for about $0.35. At expiration it would be ~$1 if the VIX had reverted below 18. That's a nice return, obviously. If it doesn't drop the way you hope, you can usually roll the spread out to a later expiration for a small cost. Caveats are some brokers don't let you trade spreads on VIX, it has weird expirations, there is no "underlying" stock to be exercised, and the bid-ask costs are not always good. You really need to do your homework before you put down real money.

Nice movement today. I expect that someone is watching sales of Apple products, and liking what they are seeing. Maybe a big player or fund, or an analyst that has already sent the first wave of info to their top subscribers. Today's move looks pretty isolated.
The stock app has a couple positive articles, both from Seeking Alpha, on iPad sales being up significantly in Europe while all other manufacturers of tablets are down significantly. And that a new iPhone SE will come out in the first Q of '22.
That doesn't seem enough to move things like this. Volume is already above the daily average. It might just be a move to safety or flight to quality, but it seems like more, and with a decent amount of money.

I will *not* be the one to jinx anything by speaking about "that which must not be named when things are going well"...but with almost 1.5 hours until the market closes, the volume is 105,000,000 vs the average of 78,814,330.
OK, I can't stay away from data: The volume went from 106,000,000 to 107,000,000 in 235 seconds or 4,255.3 AAPL shares traded/second.
The volume indicator on the Yahoo Finance page is moving faster than I've ever noticed before. It's ridiculous. Oh, and TSLA is down 0.51% at this time.

Only Apple and the Biotech stocks or some of them are up. Watching my list of WallStreet Bets stocks, only the biotechs are green. Some China stocks are green though this mass selling of all things Mao related seems way overdone. Apple may join the negativity tomorrow if this is more than just a bump.

Not just nice but actually quite amazing if you think about the momentum of the market. AAPL doesn’t usually move like this I think this is something different and maybe representative of a new mindset about the stock.
When you think about a flight to safety , corporate and government bonds are basically like burying your money in the backyard. Crypto is just gambling at least for now and everything else is so frothy that it looks dangerous no matter how the economy is doing.
Apple is starting to be thought of as the flight to safety shelter.
Relative low valuation Rock solid financials Very smart stable mgmt. Very high technology mote Very broad sticky customer base.
When you’re nervous, where else would you go?
I think that’s what’s happening today and it’s new andanother strong reason to feel safe about the stock.

First ever close above the split adjusted $162 level: finance.yahoo.com/quote/AAPL/history?p=AAPLWhat a move, though we've had at least 2 other gains of more than $5 over the past 12 months. Too bad those places with 4 wheeled things don't have many in stock. After a day like today, I wouldn't mind picking an item off our boring wish list. But I don't see any in the config we want within 500 miles, and even a nation wide search doesn't find much.

Needham analyst Laura Martin told CNBC that investors turned to Apple on Tuesday because the company has prodigious cash flow, allowing it to endure any slowdowns in the economy and take advantage of falling prices. “There’s a flight to quality with companies that you know will weather the storm, not go bankrupt, not have financial distress,” Martin said, noting that other large-cap tech stocks aren’t down as much as smaller firms. Martin added Apple is positioned to introduce new products to power new growth, including a headset. macdailynews.com/2021/11/30/why-apple-is-the-only-tech-stock-thats-up-today/Added: stocks.apple.com/A-4LNrmFzSeKgeuxQj70mQw

It would be nice if it's local-ish, or even a day's drive away. But we have a friend with a fast plane that is looking for flight time, so our net can be fairly wide.

Maybe a bunch of people had AAPL in their sights, and were just waiting for a day to trade out of their other positions, before getting into AAPL. But it seems more likely that an analyst said BUY!, someone went big, or someone went big enough to capture the attention of the algos. Let's see what a followthru day or two does for the stock. Hopefully this will be more than a one day wonder.
