Here's a poll for iPhone durability, mostly thinking of relatively current iPhones and how they are holding up.
Our iPhones from the last 3+ years have held up well. We put them in fairly minimal cases. My 11 had the back glass crack, but that was with me tripping and having a hard fall onto granite. I'd put that into the "yes, but expected" category. The kid's SE2 and SE3 are holding up decently, and my wife's 13Pro is doing fine so far (FWIW, it is noticeably heavier than my 11, and a little thicker from the lenses).
In general it seems like durability is up considerably, but I was curious about a wider view of it, and how things have been for others.
(looks like polls are only available on new threads)

Had an iPhone7 for 4-5 years. Very minimal case. No damage whatsoever. Current phone is a 12 mini. 2 years old. Another minimum case. No damage to that either.

The main reason for me to upgrade is that the software becomes obsolete. The old ones that I’ve kept in my bookcase still look new. But that’s just me.

I have a Mophie battery + case for my 2nd generation SE. If someone carried their iPhone without a protective case in the back pocket of their jeans without dropping it or cracking the iPhone, I would be amazed. My Mophie case has a crack on the bottom. I have dropped the iPhone 5-10 times in the past year. The iPhone STILL looks like new.

Not mine, but wife and kids have had a few. We have LOTS of iPhones here, more than 10 still in use at this point. And MANY old ones that aren't used anymore. All in cases. Right now I'm looking for an iPhone 13 pro, but I haven't seen anyone willing to sell me one at a fair price. That's probably because of excellent supply chain management on Apple's part.
The newer iPhones are clearly more durable. My friends, and more importantly, my kid's friends, rarely have cracked screens anymore. My daughter's XS just split at the seams recently and she replaced it with an iPhone 13. Got a case, but she insisted on also having a tempered glass screen protector on it.

My wife and daughters all have the screen protectors. The screen protectors themselves are pretty much all cracked. So what's the point? I have never had a cracked screen since my original iPhone 1.

Got lots of scratches on my 12 screen so trying a screen protector on my 13 pro for the first time. Intersting that after a few weeks an aiir bubble appeared in corner but as I was getting around to replacing it with the second protector in the packet it actually went away on its own.
I tried the 13 Pro caseless first time since 4S, it slipped out of my hands twice onto concrete, luckily didn't smash but the the steel band got scratched up rough (I've tried to smooth it out with steel wool) and a couple of chips out of the camera lens edges. Super annoying so I'm back using a silicon case and haven't dropped it since (probably because its very grippy).
As soon as a magsafe compatible folio wallet case becomes available I'll get one of those (Havent used one since the Bookbook for 5S).

It's looking like current iPhones are pretty durable. I'd be interested to hear about the one poll entry where the iPhone cracked when it seemed like it wouldn't.
My wife's 13pro hits the floor a lot, and one of the kids one does too. OTOH my 11 maybe falls once or twice a year...so they really got a kick out of mine being the broken one. But my cheap clear case is coming apart, so I might just put a solid colored one on.
I have some scratches on the front glass too. Normally I don't have anything else in my front pocket with it. But I do enough stuff that apparently it would still be good to have a screen protector on it. OTOH, there's times when out in the field, leaning into a log I'm cutting or boulder that I'm moving, that I realize I'm pushing where the iPhone is in my pocket. I normally put it "screen in" now. But it's been durable enough that I don't think about it much these days.

Always used typical rubber cases and have never sustained any damage, but when I’m not using it it’s usually in a pants pocket so it can’t fall out.

The poll does not quite match my circumstance, but voted anyway. I have a new iPhone 14 Pro - black. It has significant scratching and abrasion on the back. I think from being in the same pocket with a hotel key. Which also happened with my iPhone 13 that held up very well. Disappointing.

Yea, polls only 5 options, and not every one is going to be a perfect fit. Thanks for the info. I've mostly at least had mine in at least a cheap case, so I haven't worried about the back as much. I normally try to keep it in a front pocket with nothing else in it, but I thought they didn't have as much scratch issues. Maybe there is room out there for someone to sell cling-wrap type material, that doesn't mark up too quick but also isn't slippery. Even a thin case adds some bulk, and the iPhones sure look nice without a case.
