His first responsibility is to shareholders, not Fox News. I think we can all agree that Apple must reduce its China manufacturing dependency, but it is going to take time. Those questions are loaded. Even if he agrees with the gist of them, he runs the risk of igniting a fierce and damaging backlash from the Chinese government, if he responds at all to them. To me, his only choice is “no comment”, which is essentially what his silence is. And to deal privately with his concerns with the appropriate channels in China directly. It would be flat out stupid to try and address this stuff publicly.

What does Apple have to gain from him commenting one way or another? I think it should be obvious that he, like the rest of us, supports freedom, and supports increasing freedom in China. The real question is, if being goaded into making a statement helps increase freedom in any way? Right now, the answer is "no". Besides, at this point, everyone knows that the only way to do it is to post a hashtag on social media. You post something like #freechinafromtheCCP and then all will be well.

All the networks are reporting insufficient information on the China Apple and Elon Musk issues and it has obviously taken a life of it’s own previously. A simple clarification to cut the wild speculation from Cook himself or Apple PR would be sufficient without hurting the Communist party thugs.

Just wanted to be certain about AirDrop and how it works, so I went to Apple support. How to use AirDrop on your iPhone or iPadSo you can only communicate with someone that is in your contacts list and you are in theirs. I was getting the impression that someone/anyone could simply broadcast to anyone that just happens to be within your vicinity. So the idea that strangers could be abused with random member portraits were false and misleading. So how does that 10 minute delay do anything but destroy the features usefulness? It kills the idea of instant communication amongst friends that are nearby, right? But it isn’t that Apple is basically making this function useless in China, but after the first of the year they are also making it useless around the world which is what really worries me. And also, what happens during that 10 minute delay? Does that data go off to a server somewhere to be analyzed before being passed on to the recipient? And, Tim not answering the reporter’s questions was the correct thing to do, in my opinion. But why did the reporter ask those questions? The next time he’s asked those questions he may be under oath.

The next time he’s asked those questions he may be under oath. Up until now this is how AirDrop works with photos. 1. Select a pic to share in the Photos app 2. Tap AirDrop 3. You then see every iPhone near you. Including people not in your contact list. Assuming AirDrop is set to Everyone, which I believe is the default. 4. You can initiate a send to anyone that your iPhone “sees” 5. When you initiate a send, receivers must accept the AirDrop request. Sounds like in many cases, like on airplanes people have been accepting these random requests and getting surprised by the content they receive. EDIT - the request to send, does have a preview, so EVERYONE gets a glimpse of what is coming. Including nudes and what not. Also, AirDrop is not being made useless as you claim. If you set it to “contacts only”, it will work just like it does now for your contacts. The 10 minute thing (which is NOT a delay) is for people not in your contact list. I think this is a good change, independent of the whole China thing. Sorry, but you are the one being false and misleading here.

Also you can send Files to other devices you own via Air Drop as long as Bluetooth is up on running that you want to move files too. sometimes its useful for a quick transfer: files Photos etc. And yes you can set it in Settings to accept either from everyone in close proximity, like if you standing on a Set and want to send someone a picture they turn on airdrop and will see you iPhone in proximity and they can accept the request.
if its set to Contacts only than that's how it works again if someone you know is in close proximity.

It actually uses both WiFi and Bluetooth. Which makes large transfers very fast. It is incredibly useful.

Okay, I just went to my AirDrop settings on my phone and my iPad and they were set at “contacts only”. I’m guessing that that selection is the default selection as I have never used AirDrop before and would have no reason to make any changes. So, again, why would Apple place a 10 minute waiting period ( and what is a “thing”) on AirDrop to protect people from receiving pictures that they have already said, by choosing “Everyone”, that they want to accept? Forget about any conspiracy theories here, just explain Apples logic for making those changes. What am I overlooking. Considering that a large chunk of the world is a little upset by this, I would like to know why. After all, public opinion is being swayed here and it’s likely that laws and regulations may be passed, so it is no little thing.

And, Tim not answering the reporter’s questions was the correct thing to do, in my opinion. But why did the reporter ask those questions? The next time he’s asked those questions he may be under oath. I don't think you understand the 10 minute thing! They aren't delaying the transmission for 10 minutes, they are allowing it for 10 minutes! I hardly use airdrop, but my kids do. But I did use it at a concert a few months ago. Something cool happened, and I tried to snap a photo in time but missed it. Meanwhile the guy sitting in front of me did get the photo, and he offered to airdrop it to me. He tried, but I didn't see it. That's because I was on "contacts only", so I set it to "everyone" and the photo arrived. Most people who use airdrop regularly will set it to "everyone" because adding everyone to contacts in a pain, especially when it's a one-off thing. And many people don't want to give random acquaintances their contact info. So back to the original problem. Because so many people had their phones set to "everyone", as they moved around densely populated areas (trains, city streets, concerts, etc), sometimes photos would simply pop up on their phones. The objectionable ones were sent by miscreants who simply kept their photo "on air" all the time as they walked around the area with the phone hidden in their pocket. The feature being added, and already added in China, is to only allow "reception" of airdrops from non-contacts for 10 minutes and then the phone will stop receiving them. BUT, this feature change has been discussed, debated, developed, and released long before the current round of protests in China. I agree that it reduces the feature usability.

Thanks Mark, on the 10 minute thing. There is no delay. Also, I think that most frequent users of AirDrop will have the everyone setting on. I was on a fishing trip a while back, and another fisherman and I were sharing photos. We were not in each others contacts. But as frequent users, we were accepting AirDrop photo sharing from everyone. That will still work, but for 10 minutes only, before you have to toggle the setting again. And yes, it is going to be a pain, but it certainly does not render it useless as is being claimed here.
And I guess conspiracy theorists are out there distorting the 10 minute thing, and passing on bullshit about how that fabricated 10 minute delay will be used by some mysterious force controlling some mysterious server somewhere to doctor photos. Jesus Christ, the lies and distortion out there to propagate entirely false nonsense that suits their version of the world.
EDIT - I was in a food court when I made my first post on this stuff. I went into AirDrop and right away I saw 25 phones ready to accept my request to send something to them. The phone was still finding more when I exited the feature. None of these were included in my contacts. If I was a bad actor, I could have sent some bad content. And ALL of those phones would have seen the preview. Without accepting anything.

But why did the reporter ask those questions? That's pretty obvious...the reporter asked *those* questions so Fox could post the video and story about how Apple CEO Tim Cook is siding with those dirty commies in China, hates free speech and hates the USA. Just take another look at the text that accompanied the video. ===== Apple CEO Tim Cook ignores questions on whether he supports protests in China Apple CEO Tim Cook was silent when asked by FOX Business' Hillary Vaughn whether he supports the Chinese people's right to protest, and whether he thinks it is problematic to do business in China.
The CEO of tech giant Apple refused to comment on the ongoing protests in China, a political development with serious implications for his company. FOX Business caught up with Apple CEO Tim Cook on Thursday as he arrived for meetings with lawmakers on Capitol Hill in Washington.
The next time he’s asked those questions he may be under oath. Really? Under oath? What group do you know of that would question, under oath, the freedom of an American company to make changes to one of their own products?

I have a fairly large piece of property. I will offer it up to Tim for free, so they can move corporate to Canada, and avoid whatever BS is coming at them from congress.

They have provided an explanation to the world. That is why we know how the change is going to work. But it’s hard to fight the misinformation machine who have a vested interest in twisting things to make Apple look bad. Including flat out lying, which is going on in this case.
