Maybe the icons are so basic for compatibility / user experience matching on the upcoming cheaper iPhones - hmmmmm. I like that hypothesis. Eh, I just think it's a new design philosophy. OTOH, I think Apple wants to at least break away from the old Retina Displays ASAP. iOS 7 clearly looks more at home on the current Retina Display. And if no iPod touches selling sport the old Retina Display anymore, neither should ANY of the iPhones on offer this September or so.

I believe some of the home screen icons of iOS7 are placeholders for the real ones on the gold master. There's a design continuity issue with those revealed at WWDC. Not to worry. As I've posted before, some of the screen shots Apple has on its web site are more attractive

I trust Jony's sense of taste and Apple's design sensibilities in general. Yeah Safari looks a little weird, but that's small stuff. The adjustment curve and utility improvement are the big two and it looks like Apple's doing just fine so far.

The adjustment curve and utility improvement are the big two and it looks like Apple's doing just fine so far. In Jony I trust. However. I'm running iOS7 now. The functional improvements are significant. The amount of change in iOS is dramatic, especially in the 7 months since Jony has manned the wheel. This is no evolutionary upgrade; In OSX terms, it's like going from Jaguar to Mountain Lion. Apple apps are uniformly better (and different) than found in iOS6, and there's enough familiarity to keep the learning curve manageable. Perhaps my eyes are tired this evening, but I am resisting some of the neon color choices for icons. Too, there's something unsophisticated looking about a neon green icon for "Phone" next to a bright red "Music" icon. The standard backgrounds don't help much, so I used a dark gray photo to tone things down a bit. Apple's use of fonts and contrast are making an even better argument for a larger iPhone. More impressions over the next week.

I am telling you, iOS 7 will be a huge hit. But the bigger news is that Jony told us this just the beginning. Almost as if he has been caged for a long time and in 8 months that is all he could do. I look forward iOS 9 and 10. That's when we will be blown away.
My daughter reports tonight that kids are hacking and figuring out to get the beta for free.

LA LA LA LA DEVELOPER NDA ;D
Well, hypothetically speaking...this is THE SHORTEST dev cycle of any iOS release ever. It wasn't just a change, there was a wholesale...er...environmentally responsible disposal of UI elements deemed too tacky, shiny or anachronistic-ish. So maybe it was more like 6 months of forward progress instead of 8?
The color palette is bright, but like Apple likes to say, "give it a week". If enough devs' eyes hurt maybe Apple will listen.
