A friend (and no I won't disclose his name) told me those shares were sold short! I don't like it either as I thought maybe Appl would rise somewhat and especially for Aug dividend.

An iPhone 5S announcement - or "better than feared" results + guidance next month - will do the trick. I'd hope. You hitting the sauce early? iPhone 5s announcement? Although iOS7 Beta 3 is rumored next week (fast!), you're at least 45 days early (at the earliest) for any new phone announcement. Forecasting, Mercel. You asked what it'll take to kick AAPL out of its funk, and I answered. Of COURSE we'll be waiting until late August/early September, minimum, for an Apple announcement on iPhone. If we're lucky Dalrymple will "yep" in mid/late August.

Standard Reddle is, well, red + black and white background. The mobile-specific version, if you see it, has a more Retina-friendly type IMHO, with a cool blue type/white background look. It's not the Reddle theme at all for whatever reason, it's optimized for smartphones. Not sure if tweaks to the desktop Web version will change that in the future.

IPad - I was referring to the following: Did you notice the huge spike in volume after hours? The June quarter and window dressing is over. This could be the institutions starting appl accumulation early. Hopefully this is a sign we will have a better July. I did not. Great observation. AH volume was about 4,000,000 shares above daily average. hmmmm, who would want 4,000,000 shares on the kast trading day of the quarter? A clue could be in this tidbit. I haven't examined every trade, but of the several pages I did review all of the large block trades were made on downticks. Does that ring any bells? I'm adjusted my share count downward by 4,000,000 shares. editOh, I forgot to add, I have now seen trading activity that says Apple is buying. I think this is how Apple intends to do it - After Hours on the last trading day of the quarter. In this manner management cannot be accused of attempting to pump the stock (increased buy side volume), while at the same time complying with buying on downticks (much easier to manage After Hours).

Thought exercise.
$50 billion over the next 18 months, right? That's ~ $11 billion per quarter. $11 billion divided by $397 = ~ 27.98 million shares per quarter
Not that Apple will be able buy at $397 much longer.……I hope.
Opps I think it should be 30 months.
$50 billion over the next 30 months, right? That's ~ $5 billion per quarter. $5 billion divided by $397 = ~ 12.6 million shares per quarter

Lucy - just some thoughts: Friday was the Yearly Russell Rebalancing and there were large prints in many names. Not sure how to sift through and figure out what is significant or part of the rebalancing. Also - there are very specific rules on buy backs including % bought on any given day so I am not certain how AAPL is executing.

Someone should ask at the next CC.
Quick question phoebear, how market-moving would the Russell rebalance generally be expected to be?

This weekend in the UK is the annual Music Festival Bash known as Glastonbury! The BBC promised this would be the first all digital show with live coverage streaming et al. Unfortunately it seems the "live" part of the coverage is not extending to this side of the Pond. Also the BBC's Glastonbury Site seems to be encoded with the EVIL Flash no HTML5 no H264 and as yet no iPlayer over here. This cuts down on usage of current gen Macs with no Flash installed by default and no IOS Devices....So while I'am a big fan of the Beeb on this issue am calling Fail.... Quite frustrating was really looking forward to Portishead The Stones etc had my Wellies all ready... Some of the vids will play in Chrome...some will not www.bbc.co.uk/events/ej58q9

Someone should ask at the next CC. Quick question phoebear, how market-moving would the Russell rebalance generally be expected to be? It varies but it is the biggest rebalancing for all the WS program desks and they prep for it for weeks. It can move markets and hurt lots of traders as they try to scalp in front of the rebalancings. By the way - one more thing to add on the AH trades in AAPL - the major banks continue to produce structured products linked to AAPL so God only knows if some of these larger prints are associated with anything like that. Oh and lastly ... I am not familiar with the AAPL bonds but if any are converts, an institution would be buying the bonds and shorting the shares as a hedge. Anyway ... so many things that late volume can be...it's anyone's guess.

When (not if) sentiment returns to AAPL, the weeklies will be overpowered. Next week? Too soon to know. AAPL is catalyst-starved uyntil earnings unless WS rationality returns on its own power. It's quite possible Friday's ah action could prove to be a significant catalyst.

Where Does Apple Go from Here? (2004)tidbits: Q: What do you think of Apple's mall store retail strategy? ....... I don't expect it will ever generate significant revenues or significant profits. and a comment on Steve Jobs: Can anybody really run two companies simultaneously, Apple and Pixar, in two different businesses without sacrificing something? Can you bring enough attention to both companies and really be running them? I doubt that anybody can really do that well.

Difficult to critique his comments, so much was spot on, on the other hand he was just like the media and competitors: trapped in "that's the way its always been" mindset. As good as his observations were, the one wearing blinders was himself. He could not see outside the box he knows very, very well.

Back from the Apple store where I received a brand new iPhone 5 to replace my old 5 which had a broken sleep/wake button. Didn't realize I'd get a new phone. Looks great and now I should get even more credit toward the 5S.

The typical practice has been to swap out the phone, almost always for new.
They still do that quite often from what I know (I've handled family iPhone warranty issues), though they're equipped for repairing the original unit.

What's going on?...or is this just a coincidence?

I hate to keep harping on this, but assuming that the device used for the WWDC demo was an iPhone 5, then I am interested in opinions about: 1. What will be the minimum hardware specs for iOS 7, for the oldest supported model (4S?) and the Cheap iPhone? 2. How would the hardware upgrades in the iPhone 5S/6 improve on what we've seen of iOS 7? Just smoother and snappier, or possibly enabling some yet-to-be announced feature, say payments or some other software service? EDIT: If any members running the beta would be willing to say what hardware they are running it on, that would be great.

General rule of Apple consumers - hold Apple 100% accountable for hardware issues like buttons that don't work 100% of the time.

Interesting that many here have had issues with the iphone 5. I just had to swap mine out because the rear camera broke and would no longer focus.
15 minutes in the Apple store and the issue was resolved.
One might expect Apple products to have better workmanship though to last more than 9 months.
Got it on launch day, maybe the original batch of phones really was that bad. I think I recall seeing a report that they rejected thousands of phones originally because of quality issues.

Ok I just made a comment about my wake/sleep button but to be honest - my son was with me and he has a problem with the focus on his camera and his wake/sleep button. They were going to fix his and said they would have if it was only the camera but for the button they swapped it out. We actually walked out with two new iPhones. It's strange that it was the same issues. We also got ours at launch.

One might expect anecdotes to not automatically be extrapolated to "-Gate"-style proportions.
But since we're on anecdotes:
- I had zero issues with my iPhone 1, iPhone 4S, and iPhone 5. I've dropped my iPhone 5 (in a impact-resistant case) a few times. I'm aware of the potential consequences of my careless behavior.
- I had case cracking issues with my iPhone 3G. Yep, it got dropped a lot, and there's only so much even a silicone case can do. My iPhone 4 home button degraded over time. It still works, but only in certain ways. Sure, I used it a lot, but I don't think it was my fault it got that way. Obviously irritating.
- I know of an iPhone 5 owner who had the Home button go bad within weeks.
- I needed two iPad 3 swap-outs within two days. The first for a small chip in the display, the second for an LTE radio that refused to access LTE. The third has been trouble-free since then.
My verdict: Crap happens to electronics. The higher the unit production, the higher the number of failures. But triangulating from the media, it doesn't look like iPhone 5 is faring any worse QC-wise than, say, the plastic-backed Galaxy S4.

My iPhone 4 worked perfectly for 2 years. My 5 was swapped out after four months with a new 5 after the genius confirmed that my top button was glitchy AND the light sensor had failed. It seems the i5 is more problematic, but then I did have one of the first few off the line in September.

By all account iOS runs fine on the iPhone 4, although it is missing some of the new visual improvements. iOS seems to have been designed for the A5 and higher, so I expect that will be the chip present in a new Apple mid priced iPhone.

General rule of Apple consumers - hold Apple 100% accountable for hardware issues like buttons that don't work 100% of the time. The kb buttons on my MacBook Pro have begun splitting (from overuse I'm sure). Every time I've gone into the Apple Store to get one fixed they just hand the key for several different styles/models of MacBook Pro. I'm starting to accumulate a nice little supply.
