4K in Apple's future? To address a market suspended in time? Sure, I can go with that.
But I'll wait until I get a much better source than that.

Big day for earnings - Verizon, google, Microsoft, Nokia.
If Verizon can ship 3.2 million iPhones or more I will be very happy. Anything below 3 million will be a rather average result. Of course anything below last years 2.7 million would be horrible.

Red You misunderstood what I meant. I see fingerprint scanner next year, but massive adoption of pay by phone as a benefit years from now. TC said we are in the infant stages and I think he is correct when it comes to mobile payments. Every iPhone must have it and it will take at least 4 years for that. Secondly iPhone market share is only 9% world wide. Not enough to change drastically how merchants accept payments. It will happen but we are years away. I thought the Mini would come out later that's all. It is entirely possible every iPhone apple sells could have fingerprint sensors in it from this September onwards, the new mid tier iPhone may have it and replaces the iPhone 4&4S, and apple reduces options to one premium line, with the iPhone 5S with fingerprint sensor replacing the iPhone 5. There you go, two iPhone product lines with multiple storage SKUs - all with fingerprint sensors built in. Pretty simple really (if the technology is ready). Remember Apple has owned authentec for a while now, so whatever technology they have been working on will have remained secret - so there is no reason anyone you know would have any info on it Sponge. A timely release: appleinsider.com/articles/13/07/18/apple-details-in-display-fingerprint-sensor-tech-in-patent-filing-from-authentec-cofounder"Apple's sensor patent details a technology that can not only fit into a mobile device like an iPhone, but can "read" biometric characteristics of a finger from distances larger than existing methods afford. The application, titled "Finger sensor having pixel sensing circuitry for coupling electrodes and pixel sensing traces and related methods," credits AuthenTec co-founder Dale R. Setlak as its inventor. Current rumors and speculation point to a next-generation iPhone with fingerprint sensor built into the home button. If the technology outlined in Thursday's application is used, however, the sensor may instead be embedded in the iPhone's display. The patent language notes the fingerprint sensor can be stacked with, or part of, an LCD display. As such, the sensor can also be used as a means of input, and can also be used in conjunction with other circuitry to support selection function, provide tactile feedback, or power up a device. Of note, the document points out that the sensor array can be either rigid or flexible, meaning mounting options are vast."

Verizon reports pre-market open, so Xmas, I mean a data point, actually shows up a bit early this year. Err quarter.
Thanks for the heads-up burgess. Doubtful any numbers from Verizon will somehow trump the forces of monthly OpEx, but for those of us more dialed in, they're still really important.
Activation compares are a step removed from actual YOY sales growth (which in turn is a step removed from "true" sell-through" comparisons), but that aside, I'd be OK with 2.9-3.0M activations. Anything around 15-20% activation growth (3.1-3.25M) would be really interesting, and unlikely IMHO.

Nokia reported, smartphone sales up (good for them I guess). US Nokia smartphone sales dropped year over year from 600k down to 500k units.

Man, I can still remember when Nokia seemed invincible. OTOH, I can still remember when touchscreens were more like novelties, and smartphones just not looking that smart, or wieldy.

Yesterday an analyst at Raymond James had this to say about the recent iPhone rumours: "Apple is always pushing the envelope on cutting edge materials, components, assembly processes, etc., and this puts more supply chain risk into massive global launches than for many other smartphones. As with most stories, we suspect there is a grain of truth to recent stories written about issues with integration of fingerprint sensors or other component issues. However, it’s important to note that Apple and all smartphone manufacturers face these issues every year, and these stories have become annual “rites of passage” for technology journalists it appears. Importantly, damage done by launch delays or tight supply at Apple tend to be much less than at other handset vendors due to its power in the supply chain to procure components, and its sticky customer base, which tends to wait for the next iPhone, not the next smartphone, to upgrade (iPhone 4S is the classic example)." Weird, looks like it started trading again at 8am, with just 180 shares recorded as having been traded in premarket so far.
Verizon had good results, but no iPhone number yet - will come in conference call at 8.30 I guess.

For comparison purposes, below are calendar quarter comparisons by carrier.

Presentation up on investor relations. 7.5M activations. No mention of breakdown.

Business Insider just tweeted this but I have not verified it: iPhone activations at $VZ grew 44% in Q2 up from 25% in Q1.
Actually - correction - it was "re-tweeted by BI" but the person who made the statement was Walter Piecyk (wireless analyst at BTIG)>

You won't get breakdowns in the presentation. But along with the 7.5M smartphone activations, you DO get a semi-data point of 6.4M LTE device activations to go with 10.1M "retail postpaid device activations" and "88% of device activations were phones", leaving about 1.2M "other devices" that are probably all LTE tablets.
Continuing down the semi-perilous road of fuzzy math, that means probably a little over 5M LTE smartphones were activated this quarter, accounting for around 2/3 of all smartphone activations.
If iPhone becomes an all-LTE lineup in a few months or so, it'll be interesting to see how many non-LTE smartphones are activated the same time next year.

If Verizon reports a data point suggesting 25%+ YOY iPhone activation growth, there's gonna be one heck of a strange YOY sell-in compare (reported sales numbers), OR iPad is tanking, OR Apple will surprise to the upside quite nicely. I don't even know what I'll think if that data point is >35%.
I can wait another 10-20 minutes for more official info. Considering the compare is 2.7M, I'm a little skeptical.

Sometimes I wonder if HTC isn't secretly the kinda-Kia to Hyundai, even though HTC is a Taiwanese firm and Samsung, well, isn't. HTC, if the One X isn't really lighting things up...I'm not sure what a "copycat" mini strategy which is _very much_ a compromise from the One X will do for ya. Also, how is this not little more than a modest refresh of, say, the HTC Sensation? www.theverge.com/2013/7/18/4530946/htc-one-mini-specs-release-date-price"iPhone go" could clean the floor with both the S4 and One minis.

These strong VZ numbers is another example that when the choice is there Apple is still the best. The competition IMHO in the smartphone game is weak. I have never felt competition was Apples problem it was speed of releases, supply chain and carrier access. The main reason many people around the world don't buy iPhones is they can't afford the phone and availability is limited. I believe the cheap iPhone and some carrier deals will imrpove this issue. Apple's iPhone4 is more well liked than many brand new phones.
Just be aware of the potential sell the news scenario. Just based on premarket, Apple looks like it could move around a bit today.

Almost unbelievable.
Apparently the S4 may not be pushing back against iPhone as well as hoped.
