Thanks, Fellow Red! What I was remembering was aN essay that used this book as source material and tied the derivatives and HFT to the theories it espoused. Excellent!

iPhone projections don't always work.
One usage vision isn't the only vision.
And you do know the requirements supporting the tech, don't you? Recall Tim's trade-offs. I'm not 100% dismissing the $12.5B Google spent to partially demean what's left of Moto's brand every time a user uses the Google Now services, but there are many factors involved in a product decision like this that must be weighed against Apple's product philosophy. Y'know, the one that got it to $150B.

Shatner could have easily been sitting in his captains chair eating Nachos el grande and wouldn't have to even think about breaking out the Kleenex before needing to control the ships computer. Meh, Kirk would just have a hot young android (small "a") help him. I just read that Michael Ansara passed away on Wednesday - Star Trek Klingon Commander Kang. My condolences to all you Star Trek fans - even though he played an enemy he was part of the franchise. Funny, I always tend to remember actors for the first thing I saw them in. In this case, the Blue Djinn from I Dream of Jeannie. It is pretty cool that they used the same actor to reprise a character almost 30 years after ToS in DS9 and Voyager. And just to try to make this post relevant, Ansara was Syrian too, like Steve Jobs.

Ok - crap -I'm dating myself but I remember him on I Dream of Jeannie as well.
Hey - I agree with doc on this watch debate. I have two kids age 26 and 23. There are young people always in my house and we go to places where there are people in their age group. They ALL wear watches. When these kids were in high school - none of them did and they would tell me they didn't need one - said they have their phone for checking the time but in college everything changed. Granted, they aren't fancy watches but doc is right - they have multiples. So from all I have seen - and also from asking people in their age group - they like and do wear watches and are extremely curious about the rumored iWatch. And by the way, when they were in college their friends were of the same mind so it really isn't a small sampling. doc has it right....I see it all around me and beyond.

Going back further, Michael Ansara played the memorable part of Cochise in the western Broken Arrow (if memory serves). And if it wasn't pointed out earlier, Ansara also married Barbara Eden of I Dream f Jeannie.
I had no idea he was 91. Time flies (except for the past 9 months...)

iWatch is more iPod than iPhone if you know what I mean.
Could still be tremendously valuable to Apple, but probably not as a growth driver on its own. The next evolution of iPod/nano though, sure. I hope an iWatch isn't more than 1-2 years away, but there's no huge rush on it if the tech isn't there yet. Very frustrating how battery tech seems to have stagnated over the years.

Bloomberg reporting iPhone 4 ban reprieve issued by Obama... The only logical thing to do. SEP abuse is abusive. Why the hell did it take so long? Meaningless for sales, but a big deal going forward.

GOOG doesn't compare favorably with AAPL either, but it's not the total washout that AMZN is, relatively speaking. But that doesn't stop WS from assigning it a P/E of 26. Hell, AAPL would be over $1,000 if we had that kind of P/E.

Watches was just an aside, but your kids are older than those to whom I was referring - I was talking about HS and college kids. The ones I know (and their friends) all own watches and none wear them. When I've asked the answer is "Why?" Oh, and with the release of an iWatch they all will wear one! Now, about that expectation of privacy...

Or just typically slow government work. Obama admin likely didn't want to overturn it immediately, without appearing deliberative and fair, and look (any more) biased towards a US company as he accuses the Chinese of the same thing. Here's the US Trade Rep's letter, an interesting read.

Now, about that expectation of privacy... No...no...I AM talking about the college kids. My son just graduated and these last four years I saw it on campus. I agree with you on the high school kids and said as much. It's also (I think) that in high school your world is still very structured but in college you are more on your own and your time management is more important. In class you are asked to either shut your phone or put it on silent - and of course during exams they don't want your phones around (obviously due to info potentially being obtained). So kids start to mature more and gravitate toward watches in their college years. Again - not a Patek Phillipe - but a Navy Seal rugged type watch.

Tinfoil yes, but I sometimes wonder if Apple isn't skipping over iPhone 4S this year in small part to keep clear of possible "intellectual property baggage". One way to get around any iPhone 4S issues is to leapfrog to iPhone 5C, after all. Use Samsung's ability to, er, _not_ get current-gen models banned through delay or whatever in Apple's own favor. A perverse driver of innovation, that, but hey, it's a mad world.

WASHINGTON — Apple Inc may continue to import and sell certain older iPads and iPhones made to use on AT&T's network, U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman said on Saturday in overturning a ban issued by a trade panel.
Froman overturned a June decision by the International Trade Commission, which ruled that some Apple products infringed a patent owned by Samsung Electronics and ordered Apple to stop selling the popular devices.
"This decision is based on my review of the various policy considerations ... as they relate to the effect on competitive conditions in the U.S. economy and the effect on U.S. consumers," Froman said in his decision.
The U.S. ITC said that Apple had infringed on a Samsung patent that allows the ability of devices to transmit multiple services simultaneously and correctly through 3G wireless technology.
The iPhone accounts for about half of Apple's revenue. While the company doesn't disclose sales data on individual smartphones and tablet models, the current version of the iPhone typically accounts for the biggest chunk of iPhone shipments of more than 100 million units annually.
The case at the International Trade Commission was No. 337-794.

Obama has vetoed the import ban on iPhone 4 and older iPad models.
From the AP:
President Obama's trade representative has vetoed a ban on imports of some Apple iPads and older iPhones, reversing a ruling in favor of rival Samsung Electronics.
U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman on Saturday overruled a June decision by the U.S. International Trade Commission. The commission banned imports of the iPhone 4 and some variants of the iPad 2 when it ruled that the Chinese-made Apple devices violate a patent held by Samsung.
But Froman says in a letter to the commission that he has concerns about patent holders getting too much leverage over competitors that use their technology under licenses.
Samsung and Apple are in a global legal battle over smartphones. Apple argues Samsung's Android phones copy vital iPhone features. Samsung is fighting back with its own complaints.

I dunno iPad. You think that'll have much difference on AAPL either way? Or is it more like a confluence point right along with the uptrend and big price levels just a stone's throw away?

Capturing the dividend in an uptrend like this is a money manager's dream. It may not look like much but when you are chasing return it counts.

F Samsung, as close as one can get to an organized crime operation selling counterfeit goods. Shame on consumers for not recognizing or caring enough about how it conducts itself doing business.

Well, for Apple and Samsung - "it's complicated". But over the next decade, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Apple quasi-owns or outright owns mission critical parts of the supply chain. A foundry here, a few manufacturing facilities there. Who knows, Apple might buy up some of Micron (stock), since Micron bought up Elpida (known Apple supplier)? I've always been more than happy with the Micron RAM I've bought over the years.
