New week - here's hoping for a 3rd green week in a row. China Mobile announcing its own brand of android smartphones priced from around $80 to $215 USD. Sounds like the kind of thing it might do before an iPhone launch, to try and counter the iphones subsidy costs. Here is a news piece about it, worth reading: news.xinhuanet.com/english/sci/2013-08/03/c_132598229.htm?utm_source=Sinocism+Newsletter&utm_campaign=c5a9ac67f4-Sinocism08_05_13&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_171f237867-c5a9ac67f4-3627837Interesting tidbit from the article: Chinese Mobile customers have an average upgrade cycle of 23 months - that's far more frequent than I had guessed. Also interesting that china mobile has a large stake in a Chinese clone of Siri, which it installs on china mobile smartphones - I wonder if that was a key sticking point in Apple negotiations, and if Apple has/will consider having it pre-installed on the iPhone home screen (that would be a first wouldn't it?).

From the article: "Say it ain't so, Joe" China Mobile tripled 3G Smartphone signups, revenue grew, but net went flat, while data usage declined along with ARPU. Low cost customers ARE NOT the panacea so many would us believe.

Biggest revelation from the china mobile news is that their subscribers buy approximately 300 million handsets a year. If apple can grab just 10% of that total I would be very happy. That's like an extra bonus quarter worth of sales

Interesting. I don't mind Sony becoming the android brand of choice in Japan, and sharing the top two vendor spots with Apple there long term. There seems to be a benign resurgent nationalist streak currently in Japan at present, and I wouldn't be too surprised to see more Japanese brands succeed in their home territory at the expense of foreign companies where products are basically interchangeable. Under that scenario Apple should be safe, and competing Android vendors will likely suffer. Perhaps we will see an identical scenario play out in the USA with Moto.

Well, I don't ever want Apple "resting on its laurels". I want Apple constantly pressured and pushed on by its competition (I'd prefer a level playing field esp. in terms of intellectual property, but eh, what can ya do).
Would be interesting to know how many iPhones sold in Japan. Getting into some dangerous extrapolations, given $2.5B in quarterly revenue, a 50% revenue mix of iPhones and a $580 ASP, that's maybe something around 2.1M iPhones. Not nearly as many as Sony under any scenario. But as far as total Japan revenues go, Apple's been making very steady progress over the past 3 years ($910M >> $1.5B >> $2B >> $2.5B)

Random nearby AAPL levels I'm following: 465/470/SMA-200/480/485 above, 458/455/447/440 below.

Indeed! A gap at market open at the current PM price would be interesting AND highly unpredictable...

Sony is getting its act together. The Xperia line is appealing. Not sure why the tablet is running a stale Android but that's fixable. The Sony cameras are quite nice. I have the RX100 for travel. I've always purchased its TVs. I missed a chance to attend a rolling product show and regret that, but it's clear Sony has the product now and are doing a much better job of marketing too.

Steve deeply respected Sony at one point and so did I. We'll see if Sony can rediscover itself with time. Call me skeptical until the day they decide incomprehensible product names aren't the best idea. And no, smartphone names don't count.

Thanks. What I don't understand is how this got as far as it did. What don't we know that resulted in the ITC supporting Samsung in this case? That seems to make no sense.

Now all we are missing is for Gregg to start posting his weekly BCS trades and for others to start asking him for advice - then we are officially in a parabolic move up.

FWIW: 13 hr. marathon day at Disneyland with the family yesterday. Of course I was doing a good bit of people watching regarding phone and tablet choices. Apple's products simply dominated the competition and it wasn't even close. A tour group from Korea got on the tram with us ... about 25 people and it seemed like EVERYONE had an iPhone ... from the teenage kids to the parents. Anyone who thinks this Apple story is over is out of their minds. Exciting times ahead Good luck to the longs !

A lovely but well-mannered struggle around 468.
I want volume to continue at at least these moderate levels throughout the day with a push at the end....
