Buckle up? (I know I had to stock up on antacids and motion discomfort bags after yesterday.)
Also - time for the SPX to have another healthy retrace? Maybe even start to correct?

From Horace:
Whereas Apple is perpetually given an expected lifespan of less than a decade, Amazon is expected to have an indefinite lifespan. This is because Amazon is seen as having no competition and Apple is seen as having infinite competition. In other words, Amazon is perceived as a monopoly and Apple is perceived as the innovator that is in a permanent state of being disrupted by the low end.

One would think that there would be buying today given that it goes XD tomorrow but doesn't seem like it. I think AAPL does not go ex-div until next Monday August 12. From AAPL: " "On July 23, 2013, Apple's Board of Directors declared a cash dividend of $3.05 per share of the Company's common stock. The dividend is payable on August 15, 2013, to shareholders of record as of the close of business on August 12, 2013."

Quiz: which apple hating media outlet traded this past weekend for only 70 million? Price is truth.

Platon - I was wondering the same thing and looked it up on Investopedia...'if you are not in the company's record books on the date of record, you won't receive the dividend payment. To ensure that you are in the record books, you need to buy the stock at least three business days before the date of record, which also happens to be the day before the ex-dividend date'.......
hence the 8th for the record books on the 12th.

Hey Phoebes, Reports from Sunday's open practice at RU indicate very positive reviews for Chris, your neighbor. Said he had a strong and accurate arm. He'll probably red-shirt this year, however, since Chase Dodd is 2nd string QB (and a senior), and there is another older QB ahead of Chris as well. But I look for him to make some noise next year.

This may be the time to short AMZN, thinking some more about Bezos' acquisition of WaPo.
Do you think big media is interested in continuing to prop up AMZN so it can later whore it out with WaPo? I think the days of zero accountability are coming to an end....

GOOG not really a short candidate IMHO unless it fails the 50-day. Hmm. AAPL fighting market headwinds again. I may have "ignored" the last ex-div days spent in endless downtrend. Technically speaking AAPL is OK down to 440 by price channel analysis. But I'd prefer we not go there.

Thanks - sounds like he is way down the totem pole and not sure how his ability stacks up but they should go by ability more so than seniority. That said, if he is not as talented as all the ones who are older (and I do understand that experience helps but if one is talented that isn't something you learn - ask any golfer ) then he is in the spot he should be. I truly don't know but we will see what the season brings. Thanks for letting me know - much appreciated - glad it's a positive vibe.

I truly don't know but we will see what the season brings. Thanks for letting me know - much appreciated - glad it's a positive vibe. He's very talented, it's just that he needs to learn the offense (including the playbook), spend some time in the strength & conditioning program, and adapt to college. Plus the speed of the game at the college level is much faster, so he needs to adapt to that as well. A lot of very talented players red-shirt - or burn a year of eligibility by playing on special teams as a true freshman - so it's not a reflection of his ability. He is basically trading one year of playing time at age 18 for another year at age 22, when he is physically stronger and in a better position to contribute. Plus, by being on scholarship for five years, he has a chance to earn a Masters degree at Rutgers.

At the same time Samsung's lineup has dropped ~25% in resale value. It seems the people that we claim want cheaper iPhones, know what they want better than we do. tinyurl.com/Handset-Resale-Values

They're willing to pay a premium for Apple products. Imagine the premium they'd be willing to pay for a brand new Apple product targeted to their needs, rather than years-old devices.
Perhaps Apple knows better than anyone, and it looks like the "5C" will become a reality very shortly.
If all this was a hoax, Apple would have leaked by now that this is not going to happen, because it would be catastrophic to the stock.

Imagine the premium they'd be willing to pay for a brand new Apple product targeted to their needs, rather than years-old devices. What needs would those be that aren't addressed by a 2 year old iPhone? Anything that has to do with data speeds is controlled by their local carriers, not Apple. Most Chinese customers are still being served by 2G networks, 3G is coming online, 4G/LTE is virtually non-existent. In that environment, as a Chinese customer, I'd find limited value of anything more than glorified feature phones marketed as cheap 'smart phones'. Even if Apple and China Mobile find a way to team up, the limitations of China Mobile's network is going to restrict sales. Apple isn't going to see dramatic increases in iPhone sales in China until Chinese networks are, at minimum, 3G with strongly growing 4G/LTE coverage. With a population 4X greater than the US, and a rapidly growing "middle class", there are more than enough wage earners that can afford Apple's latest/greatest without discounting it.

What needs would those be that aren't addressed by a 2 year old iPhone? Even something as simple as compatibility with all the latest Lightning-based accessories. Apple hates ecosystem fragmentation, and continuing to sell phones for another year with two completely different types of connectors flies in the face of that. If Apple is to convince car manufacturers and others to supply Lightning ports in their new models, they'd better be selling a lot of devices that are directly compatible with them, as opposed to a big chunk of 4S-es.

A new higher rez pic of the 5c. Looks VERY nice. I alternately view the now-seeming-inevitable release of the iPhone 5C with anticipation and trepidation. On the one hand, it's clear that increased penetration in lower-cost markets can generate substantial revenue increases; on the other hand, it is likely to have the same kind of impact on gross margins as seen with the iPad Mini. I agree with most AFB members that the expansion of revenues trumps the margin squeeze. I am also sure that the same pundits who counted that as a major downside to the Mini will apply the same "logic" again. The difference may lie in the relative product market shares. For the Mini case, Apple had a huge marketplace percentage at the time of its release (though since diminished by "shipments" and poor analysis). But for the iPhone case, they are in minority position by OS if not by individual models. With the likelihood that the 5C could improve those numbers, it will be just a bit harder for naysayers to spin it negatively. I am also feeling more confident that there will be some kind of tentpole feature, fingerprint sensor being the most talked about, in order to motivate current iPhone 5 owners to continue to support the premium product. I think we're all glad just to see Apple's response to the events of the last year coming to fruition.

Trepidation? After 47% >> 37% GM YOY you should be prepared, at least inoculated IMHO.
iPhone 5C/5S would be a great lineup. Also disruptive in its own way if Apple decides to make some variety of the 5C the new "$0" iPhone as well, which I'm guessing they will.
Not a bad close from AAPL. We'll see how the market absorbs the $3.05 impact tomorrow. IIRC today was the last chance to buy in for that divvy (don't recall the tax consequences but I'm no accountant anyway).

Trepidation? After 47% >> 37% GM YOY you should be prepared, at least inoculated IMHO. Sorry for not being clear. The trepidation is due to uncertainty about how the effect of what we all see as a positive set of trade-offs will be reflected in the stock price, as in the Mini case.

I alternately view the now-seeming-inevitable release of the iPhone 5C with anticipation and trepidation Talking with others from the forum, I've come to believe that the 5C designation, change in case material and color, is a strategy to differentiate the 4S with 30 pin connector, from a "4S" with 9 pin connector. All other specs (mobo) to remain the same. The "C" in 5C, if it is indeed a real product, stands for Connector. I also believe the "leaked" photos (again if real) are meant to distract attention from what Apple will release as its flagship.

Solar being slammed right now. SCTY down 9% last I checked on top of those intraday losses.
TSLA swung to a profit (non-GAAP basis) which apparently wasn't expected by analysts. So yay for momo I guess. Had no position into earnings.

Gregg - the 5c has the same screen size as the 5 vs the 4s. That in itself is a big ass differentiator. What are you smoking bro? Pass it along
