Will we see a return to $500 today?
In very early PM trading we are already seeing $495

IMHO downtrend is completely done. Every major MA is below the stock price holding strong support with massive support near 440-450. No chance IMHo AAPL ever hits 300's again. AAPL took awhile but finally dug itself out of the hole.

I'm hoping this is the last time I'll say to myself, "We'll never see 400's again".

I think Ican's point about more share repurchase and the 700 value has suddenly gotten a lot more people to focus on actual fair mkt. value of the stock which has been absurd now for almost a year. It doesn't really matter if you think they should expand the buy back or not. ( I don't ).

By the way, apple should remember the fable about the scorpion needing a ride across the river on the back of the frog when they think about Ican.
Apple is the frog and Ican is the scorpion.

Eric in Austin That's a bit much, for now. It's not like Apple can really "stop" an Icahn type from buying in somewhat big...or would want to. Faustian bargain? All large stakeholders have a louder voice. If Apple can't deal because of it it simply isn't the company we thought it was.

The S4 was still likely one of their top selling phones. Feels like a Japanese carrier make a quasi-political decision to support Japanese manufacturers.

Eric in Austin I worked for a biotech in NJ in which Icahn got involved. He put two of his guys on our BOD, and both were extremely capable people. Long story short, Carl eventually found a buyer for the company (the pop in stock price and options allowed me to "retire"). In that case, Carl was a positive, and a welcome relief to our previous CEO, who was feeding at the trough, and who Carl demanded to step down. Carl getting involved was the best thing that could have happened to us. With AAPL, hopefully things will be civil, and he and TC will not get into a shouting match. With skin in the game, perhaps Carl will be on his best behavior (fingers crossed).

When you invest 1 billion, talk to the CEO of the company, then tweet about it, then say its worth over 250 dollars more than its current price - you received valuable information about the future growth ie 10% was even referenced in the tweet and hints about products. 100% clearly both TC and iCahn are bullish on this round of iphones and products. Otherwise you wouldnt be that bold.

icahn is just 1 of many larger-ish shareholders who're pressuring the company to return value to sh. he just happened to tweet/go public about it and drive the stock up. i'm ok with that until his stake in aapl is over 1% wonder what his next tweet's going to be.....

i have a logistics question about what happened yesterday.
So icahn tweets at 2:21PM EST yesterday. What causes the BxA to instantly jump. The initial pop I'm talking about. You see it all the time on earnings releases as well. Are trading systems that smart and fast to interpret a tweet, decide it's really good, and then make the market at that higher BxA?

The mere fact that iCahn had such an impact on Apple's share price should tell you everything you need to know about the market. It is ALL about sentiment. Apple is fine. Cook is doing a great job. These last 8 months are the product of a uneducated and fickle market full of "Investors" that think they are in Vegas at a blackjack table and crooked large investment firms that use their "Analysts" to sway sentiment how they see fit.
It's really a scary thought to see how much impact he has had ... in this case I'm happy about it since I'm long and it's made me money but it could easily have gone the other way.
It really makes people like me (long term investor) realize how naive I am.
Cheers to the longs ..... this week anyway.

AAPL might trade closer to its fundamentals now that short interest is puking in the woodshed. Icahn to retail and institutional buyers: Come on in, the water is fine. All the people selling at $490 will be fuel for more buying at $520+. If there's one truism in the stock market, is that retail buyers have short memories and will chase a stock every single time.

We can complain it was overblown. But ultimately the haircut from all time was likely necessary after seeing how our growth started to grind slower in 2013. Not to the levels we saw obviously but nevertheless...it happened. Main problem is everyone lost foresight of the coming pipeline. Which now is coming to fruitation. But even that is a bit of an unknown ...

Mercel - until they don't, of course. (Ah, 705...)
I've gone moronic again with short-floated buys here and there but at least the buy isn't TOO large and I did raise cash in some form of trim and trail. I'll be looking to see if AAPL holds 497ish into the close.

Yep. Say what you want about manipulation but the facts are that Samsung made huge strides in market share, revenue share and profit share, Apple reported much reduced growth in Q1 and then reported YoY reductions for the first time in years. Add to that almost an entire year without a significant product launch, and a haircut from all-time highs was certainly justified. A 45% haircut? Probably not, but price almost always overcorrects. Just gotta have the cash and the mental toughness to jump in if and when those opportunities present themselves. I was out of available cash this time, but I'll be ready next time.
