Nagrani - I will not buy the 5c ... don't know anyone who said they will. I will be buying the 5s.
Why hasn't AAPL advertised it at all? Not one commercial. How is the lay person suppose to know about it? I was telling my sister who is a high school teacher and she said she had not heard. She often asks her kids (at school) to keep her up on these things but she hasn't heard them chatting about it. Why don't they get the word out? I don't get it.

Shouldn't we be hearing some info about some models "sold-out" of preorders by now? Anywhere?

They can sell all they have. They will advertise when supply and demand are more in balance. If you push the 5s now and the average tv viewer stands in line four hours and doesn't get the phone cause they run out... Ugh
As for the 5c, I expect a lot of ads ... But when? Friday?

It makes no sense to advertise a product before it's even available in the store. As much as we keep up on what's going on in this high tech world the overwhelming majority of Apple's customers do not. For Apple the sales will come ... they don't have to come in the first 3 days ... for us investors patience is difficult. After this Friday Apple will get a lot of free press anyway ... product will be in the store and I would imagine you will start seeing the commercials.

A Baron's article has Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster estimating 1 million preorders for the iPhone 5C. No time frame given, based on tweets, REALLY I mean REALLY, no real evidence. More FUD, depressing. You mean the Gene Munster that was quoted as 89% sure China Mobile was going to be announced, and last year was sure that 10M iPhones had been sold on opening weekend? (The actual number was 5M) I used to like Gene, but I honestly can't remember when he was right about anything, so take his guesswork with a grain of salt. Not saying he's wrong or right, he just isn't any better at guessing than you or I.

LOL PhoneLegos. And some think Apple is too proprietary (can't be proprietary enough if you ask me). Via Gruber daringfireball.net/linked/2013/09/15/phonebloksMunster is running a little low on credibility. Just me, but I'll ignore him until he starts actually getting things right. 45M iPhones in 2009 *echoes*

Still can't believe DoCoMo flat-out dropped S4 from the lineup. Sure Samsung will try a S5 by March-April, but it lacks the S3 halo, along with a truly new OS. The screen size could get still huger though. ;D they didn't. they just dropped it from their winter promotions. according to Gregg's link, they are still selling the Samsung device lineup, but not promoting them.

Lets survey the quorum here: Did anyone directly pre-order the 5c? Know of anyone who did? No and no, but I don't have a large circle of friends.

Lets survey the quorum here: Did anyone directly pre-order the 5c? Know of anyone who did? My daughter did...,in yellow...,contrary to my recommendations. She runs software teams in the valley so it's not like she doesn't understand the distinctions. She did wonder if maybe she shouldn't buy a C for the bars and an S for "real life". We'll soon know if she's part of a larger "fashion" subset or just an outlier.

I hope apple doesn't announce pre-order numbers for the 5C because whatever it is it won't be what the street is looking for - I personally don't think they'd be very good and it is indeed a sleeper model (kids will get their parents to buy for them but not pre-order since they probably don't know about the phones yet). I am more excited for the 5s results but again, due to the inability to pre-order and not loving lines I can afford to wait until I can stroll into any store and purchase one right away. On another note, my next purchase will be an iPad mini with retina display. Been waiting for that for too long. ):

If the 5S does have some supply constraints (and delivery times start slipping during launch weekend), then we might see a "total sales & preorder" number after next weekends launch. That number would include 5C preorders & sales, and 5S weekend sales & orders made online for later delivery. That would be a true indication of demand.

Demand will exceed supply for the 5s on launch weekend. It is almost a guarantee delivery times will slip within the first 24 hours for those ordering online. Chances are better waiting in line on Friday.

Not sure delivery times will hold up for even an hour. But who cares! Apple didn't make enough! It was probably only 50,000 you could get online! Line marketing!!11!!11!!!
(Can you tell I find this tiresome?)
Pre-order numbers of iPhone 5S would be nice, but it'd be a change from Apple's usual PR deal. Who knows.

+1. iPhone 5c will do very well and will be a solid # for sales in FQ4, between selling into the channel (unlike last year when the 4s was already in stock) and regular sales (sell through).
I did not expect any stock outs of the 5c this weekend. Can't say what WS is thinking.

Mav 7531 posts in about a year. Assuming you sleep 4 hours a day - that's averages to more than one post every single hour for the last year. That's insane dedication to this forum. Thank you, I think. Love it! Nagrani is truly back. Not just analyzing AAPL but MAV posts!

I'm in agreement that the iPod Touch is headed for EOL. Want an iPod Touch? Buy a 3 year old iPhone. What's left of the iPod line (as we know it today) after that? Wearables.

You are limiting your thinking to western markets. Being able to sell an authorized TD-SCDMA (China Mobile) handset is going to be huge, probably bigger than US sales.

I posit a theory...
AAPL has known the demand of 5S, and meets demand. 7.5 million first weekend, 10.5 million in the first week.
64 million for Q1

FYI: Summers just withdrew his name for Fed chair....could sway markets tomorrow. Futures way green. Let's see if market follows in regular session, AND if so, fingers crossed the fruit can participate....
