Buy a white one. No anodized coating to scratch off. Just bare aluminum. I like the look better anyway. Are you sure about this? The bare aluminum part. Re Anodizing - agree that it is supposed to be tough. Seems odd that it was so easily damaged in that video. It has some type of coating. "Raw" aluminum will oxidize over time and become hazy. More than likely it has some sort of chemical conversion coating.

There's what appears to be a Leatherman tool on that keyring. These are held together by star-shaped screws that have about 30 'teeth' to them, in effect making them little sawblades. They chew through all my jeans, are very hard, and are a stupid design. Keys don't have the same hard points, and are made of softer metal anyway (so as not to damage the delicate small parts inside the lock).

On second thought I don't think the scratching will be a (or is) HUGE problem since apple already released colored alu ipods in the past and they where very scratch resistance. They let the aluminium 'rust' and embed the color in the rusty layer. That rust is very scratch resistance. I just scratched an alu ipod to test it and my worries went away. Yet is is less scratch resistant than glass. And I will never use a case for any apple device.

I call BS on this whole video. The "4S" she compares with doesn't look right. Go to the 3:30 mark in the video. Does that connector port look like the 4S's 30-pin connector? No, it doesn't.
So, if that's not a real 4S, why should we assume the iPhone 5 shown is real? Also, she doesn't show a "before" shot of the 5, so we don't really know if the purported damage was done in her demo or prior using more destructive methods.
Seems like this video was made to capitalize on the controversy by garnering more page views and driving traffic to the iFixit site.
Or, maybe I'm wrong and it's all legit.

The case is anodized aluminum. I can confirm that scratches show through as silver. I've got a couple of tiny wear spots along the chamfered back edge. It goes with the territory of being so light, IMO. No big deal. My orig iPhone with aluminum back had serious patina (and a couple of dents).

The second picture in that article is claimed to show scratches on the edges of an iPhone 5. Take a closer look – that's not an iPhone 5.

From Shanghai Daily . . . www.shanghaidaily.com/nsp/Business/2012/09/27/Earlier%2BiPhone%2B5%2Bdebut/Earlier iPhone 5 debut in China?By Zhu Shenshen | 2012-9-27 THE Apple iPhone 5 may debut on China's mainland earlier than expected after the company received consumer electronics certification from the Chinese regulator, Shanghai Daily learned yesterday. The 3C (China compulsory certification) mark came just five days after the iPhone 5 started selling in the US, Hong Kong and Singapore on Friday. The certification used to take one or two months for previous iPhone models. The faster 3C nod means the iPhone 5 will debut in the mainland in October, earlier than hopes for the end of this year. The quicker debut also marks Apple's focus on the Chinese market, its second biggest by revenue. In the second quarter, Apple China's revenue hit US$5.7 billion, or 20 percent of its global income. The WCDMA (wideband code division multiple access) and CDMA 2000 models have the 3C nod.

I doubt apple could supply a China launch any time soon - those production lines need to ramp up fast. In related news - the 2nd wave of iPhone launches tips off in about 13 hours with midnight launches here in New Zealand.

It doesn't mean anything is imminent with China Mobile. Regardless, it's better than a stick in the eye.

It won't debut in China until Apple's ready for it. As of right now, the supply situation has more in common with iPhone 4 than iPhone 4S, which would make sense considering the complete redesign.
But you bet Apple is looking to eventually get China to be a first-stage launch country if at all possible.

Speaking of supply, anyone been able to do Personal Pickup for their iPhone 5? Still not eligible for my kinda-subsidy...yet... I checked last night at 10pm and there were a few local Apple stores that had inventory BUT they weren't close enough to me, that I was willing to drive 45 minutes to pick them up. Luckily, I was on my local ATT store pre order list and they called me today saying they had my phones. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised.

I just picked up my new phone this afternoon, upgrading from an iPhone 4. First impressions, the screen is absolutely clearer and more vibrant, much lighter in weight, beautifully thinner, and leaps and bounds faster compared to the iPhone 4. The A6 chip is a winner! I'll be testing the panoramic photos and Siri tomorrow.

Supposedly, you could get up to 4x CPU performance and up to 14x GPU performance. I think you'll be OK with the speeds and feeds improvements.

I've gotten a bit more money by listing it on Amazon, than by going through any of these trade-in programs.

Craigslist is another option if you don't want to hassle with shipping, but you still have to deal with buyer inquiries and hagglers. I would probably leave it with Apple at the time of purchase just to keep it simple.

question for any other ip5 owners. Do you find that the SMS/message alert sounds are only altered by changing the music/video volume down??
Watched a movie earlier and muted sound. Couldnt figure out later why messages were not making sounds. Weird

I might actually just sell my 4S to PowerON (via Apple) or something if I can still get a decent price for it. Too bad I have to wait a little over a week before I can start looking in vain for an iPhone 5 (I want an iPhone 5, but not enough to pay $200 more than I have to!)...

First time poster who has followed the board since 2/11 back when it was on AFB. It was a breath of fresh air compared to the alternatives like Yahoo. Followed it over here and decided to register. I'm much more of an investor than a trader and have learned a lot from the posters on this Board, especially options. I basically hold shares and several tranches of LEAPS. Now I want to raise a question.
My wife and I each got the I Phone 5 delivered on 9/21 via the AT&T online store. I went on Tuesday, 9/25, to the AT&T retail store to buy two cases and car chargers/adapters. They had no chargers or adapters and the sum total of three cases which look like they were designed by the Russian army.
Then went to the Apple store at Perimeter Mall in Atlanta and they had neither and said they weren't sold out- they just hadn't received any. Subsequently we went on Friday, 9/28 to the Apple store at Lenox Mall in Atlanta. They had nothing but referred us to a kiosk in the Mall.
Went there to what was clearly a small family owned business and they had hundreds of all kinds of cases, bumpers and screen protectors but no chargers or adapters. Stocked up with screen protectors and two cases and were on our way. Not cheap by the way.
I got to thinking though and wonder what the Board thinks about neither AT&T or Apple having stock on these items. My bias is that AT&T is big, clumsy, slow, has hardening of the corporate arteries and is anything but nimble. Apple- I'm not sure- is it they have too much on their plate with the mother of all product launches and another big launch hopefully coming with the I Pad mini? Or did someone drop the ball? The margins for these products has to be several hundred percent as the raw material in the cases has to cost just pennies. Any thoughts?

I don't think there are any cases for the iPhone 5 that are designed by Apple. Certainly the Keynote didn't introduce any, and historically only the iPhone 4/4S bumpers were official Apple cases. The cases you brought were not designed by Apple.
