I got to thinking though and wonder what the Board thinks about neither AT&T or Apple having stock on these items. I think it exacerbates the "scratchgate" issue with the black iphones 5s. For those customers who would have otherwise purchased a case, it will be more noticeable/annoying to them seeing their phones get scratched with daily use.

My provider has LTE coming online this month in my area so I've been seeing flickers of LTE on the screen. Today I had it for about 3 minutes and all I can say is... WOW!!

5 delivered today, number changed over. I was in the VZ store for a while (switching from T). The first comment I heard about the iphone was not encouraging, Maps of course, but then everyone else that was around me was very excited about getting the new iphone. 1 bad, 6-7 good, I can live with that.

First time poster who has followed the board since 2/11 back when it was on AFB. It was a breath of fresh air compared to the alternatives like Yahoo. Followed it over here and decided to register. I'm much more of an investor than a trader and have learned a lot from the posters on this Board, especially options. I basically hold shares and several tranches of LEAPS. Now I want to raise a question. My wife and I each got the I Phone 5 delivered on 9/21 via the AT&T online store. I went on Tuesday, 9/25, to the AT&T retail store to buy two cases and car chargers/adapters. They had no chargers or adapters and the sum total of three cases which look like they were designed by the Russian army. Then went to the Apple store at Perimeter Mall in Atlanta and they had neither and said they weren't sold out- they just hadn't received any. Subsequently we went on Friday, 9/28 to the Apple store at Lenox Mall in Atlanta. They had nothing but referred us to a kiosk in the Mall. Went there to what was clearly a small family owned business and they had hundreds of all kinds of cases, bumpers and screen protectors but no chargers or adapters. Stocked up with screen protectors and two cases and were on our way. Not cheap by the way. I got to thinking though and wonder what the Board thinks about neither AT&T or Apple having stock on these items. My bias is that AT&T is big, clumsy, slow, has hardening of the corporate arteries and is anything but nimble. Apple- I'm not sure- is it they have too much on their plate with the mother of all product launches and another big launch hopefully coming with the I Pad mini? Or did someone drop the ball? The margins for these products has to be several hundred percent as the raw material in the cases has to cost just pennies. Any thoughts? I don't think there are any cases for the iPhone 5 that are designed by Apple. Certainly the Keynote didn't introduce any, and historically only the iPhone 4/4S bumpers were official Apple cases. The cases you brought were not designed by Apple. Apple still sells many 3 party cases for their phones and I agree it seems odd that they would not have these available from the start. Clearly missing an opportunity to make a few extra bucks there. Perhaps they wait for all the 3rd party designs to come out after the launch before they "approve" any to be sold in their stores?

I spent about an hour today at the local Verizon store. Had them re-add my old 4S to the family plan so I can give it to my dad. He wasn't too enthusiastic about iPhones last year, when I got mine, but now he's all excited after seeing that he could actually use Wolfram Alpha on it! He teaches math, so that definitely got him interested. I have most of my siblings and both parents on my family plan, and it's turning out to be a good deal. I pay $350/month for 7 devices, 4 iPhone4s, my iPhone5, a Samsung smartphone, and 1 new iPad. That's not bad at all, to be honest. With unlimited text and voice minutes, and with 6Gb of shared data.
So, anyway, at the store, over the course of an hour, I saw 4 iPhone 4S being sold. Not the 4 (which is free by the way), but the 4S, which is $100 with a 2-year contract. I asked, and the lady told me they had been out of iPhone 5 since the day of the launch. Apparently, they have not been replenished by Apple, and/or Verizon HQ is routing their phones somewhere else. (Conspiracy Theory: Holding them hostage so they can push the Samsungs for a little bit more?? Although, I know for certain that Apple requires daily activation reports of iPhones. So, unlikely... but still fishy I think)
I also saw the magic of a user with a brand new 4S, happily watching her pictures being downloaded through iCloud. She was ecstatic about how easy it was. "It just works" was certainly her experience.
Anyway, even at this store, with no iPhone5s, they were still selling $500 iPhones at a good rate. Multiply that by thousands of Verizon, AT&T and Sprint stores all over the country, and I'd say this is going to be a hell of a quarter. Potentially the biggest ever, by both revenue and net profits, in corporate history.

I realize we aren't going to hear anything like this announced but I had a dream that Apple announced "over 11M iPhones sold" Thursday morning.

New case, that hopefully fits? Check. (Yeah, so I like plastic, uh TPU, it's all to protect my preccciousss)
Screen protector? On order.
iPhone 5? Well, the race to buy one starts in about a week due to the contract subsidy deal.
Can't hardly wait. ;D
AppleCare+...? I dunno, for the iPhone 5 owners out there, why or why not?

Also - anyone tried using the Lightning cable with the iPad 2.1 amp charger, or standard USB-port accessories, like car chargers with USB ports?

AppleCare+...? I dunno, for the iPhone 5 owners out there, why or why not? I like the way they structured AppleCare+. It's really $100, but you only pay $50 up front. If you ever need to use it, you pay the other $50. For a $700-800 phone, it's a pretty good hedge.

I have AC in my car so I bought the $19 cable that fits the apple plug...I have the interchangeable cables for my iPod and the iPhone in the center console and if I'm caught with a low charge it's not an issue.

Well, the race to buy one starts in about a week due to the contract subsidy deal. Can't hardly wait. ;D AppleCare+...? I dunno, for the iPhone 5 owners out there, why or why not? I bought apple care for the iPhone 5 simply because it gives you 2 second chances if you drop or drown your phone with a replacement for $49 per incident. as for cases, mine finally showed up yesterday. Got the Incipio Frequency in black and the Tucano Libretto in (blush) 3 colors. Hey, it's a girl thing. Anyhow, the Libretto is a slim flip case in ecoleather with a good grip. The Frequency also has a good grip and when in a pic taking mood I'll probably pop that one on the phone. I'm outside a lot and there's usually something abrasive in my pockets like hay, so keeping dust off of the phone feels more comfortable for me. And I also received an ATT microcell 2 days ago. My coverage was pretty spotty and after a few more conversations with one of their tech support teams they agreed to give me the microcell. I did sort of mention I had 3 weeks remaining to return the phone and go to another carrier. No point having a superlative phone if you have to stand outdoors to use it when at home. Anyhow the microcell is miraculous. I now have 5 bars everywhere in the house all the time. And next week we start the climb up.

Another topic while I anxiously await to begin my full-court press for stores with an iPhone 5: Scratchgate. iPhone 5 owner experiences? Is it _really_ so bad that even an innocuous-seeming TPU case, or a day or two with keys, or an accidental brush with a fingernail , will scratch up the anodized color?

Is it _really_ so bad that even an innocuous-seeming TPU case, or a day or two with keys, or an accidental brush with a fingernail , will scratch up the anodized color? I find myself being a lot more careful than I was with my 4. Making sure there is no change or keys in my pocket with the iPhone 5 (black). Even so, I have several tiny wear marks along the chamfered edge of the aluminum. I'm thinking I better look in to a case (which I opted out of with my iPhone 4). Perhaps the clear anodizing of the white model would not be an issue? Seems like its just a necessary patina issue of black anodyzing of a sharply milled chamfer. I'm not surprised there are cosmetic issues leaving the factory.

I've been walking around for three (?) weeks now with my white iP5. I use no case and place it in the empty back pocket of my jeans usually. I still have no scratches or dents and plan to keep it that way! I love this phone and stubbornly refuse to cover it up with an ugly case - but that's me, living dangerously...

I still have no scratches or dents and plan to keep it that way! I love this phone and stubbornly refuse to cover it up with an ugly case - but that's me, living dangerously... If I could go naked iPhone I would, but having kids puts a damper on that idea, so I go with a bumper and screen protectors on our phones. Just today, my two-year old wanted to play with my wife's phone, but my wife didn't give him the passcode, as it was dinnertime. So the next thing you know, he chucks the phone to the floor. Probably would've freaked out if it was unprotected, but since it had something on it, we didn't even blink an eye. I drop my phone from time to time as well, and I've bought a number of used iPhones in the past that had numerous scratches on it. Originally, i had a case on the phone, but switched to a bumper, as it was thinner, and I can still feel the thinness of the phone.

Well, I'm in full-on myyyy precccccciouuussssssss mode with my iPhones.
iPhones _are_ very durable but I've always liked the basic case + screen protector treatment. My iPhone 4 and 4S look virtually new thanks to them, despite drops here and there and keys in my pocket. It's just me, though.
You should see me try to work the Home button on my iPhone 5 (I just gingerly chiseled the front protective film that came with the iPhone to make a makeshift screen protector until my #$%@#$ing late Spigen screen protector arrives). Since I didn't dare try to carve out a circle... it's hilarious.

Mav, I did the same thing, even trimmed the bottom of the back protector so it did not show. LOL I got a case at the fair Saturday, so I am good now. I was not surgical with the front, just lifted the bottom and top up enough to notch out for the home button and speaker/camera. ;D

MB - _that's_ dedication. Still no screen protector yet and with it being a little tricky to operate my Home button more impressions will have to wait. In some ways I'm loving this new iPhone (lightness, some speed improvements, LTE speed burst potential...30Mbps is no joke!), and in other ways I'm still not sure (still trying to gauge battery life, LTE isn't necessarily 100% all the time, I think iPhone 5 actually runs some of my apps a bit slower, and the maybe it's the film but I'm still not sure how much "better" the new Retina in-cell is compared to the "old" one).

I think the display looks way better Mav, but I don't use any screen protector.
My wife and I were traveling for a few weeks so I only picked mine up from our local Apple store today. Really happy with it so far. First LTE speed test was 35Mbps!

Got my 32gb white 2 days ago. First white phone ever. it is great. Larger Screen is nice. It's insanely fast with every task it does. Super light, feels good in the hand and i'm fully sold on apple's hey it's bigger but you can use it with one hand thing. They are right. it's not uncomfortable and doesn't feel big but it's more funtional. The white is sexy as hell.

I've had my ip5 for a little over a week now. Nice bump in responsiveness over the ip4S. Vz LTE service is VERY nice!
That said, I'm not overwhelmed with the physical form factor. Don't like the super thin and long profile. The phone just doesn't feel good in the hand. JMO, but I think Ive went overboard with the "form" and neglected a bit of the function. i.e. bat life and screen size.
I'm hopeful that Apple will expand the phone lineup with larger phones in 2013. We'll see..........
cheers JohnG

Tim talks about "Largest ramp in Apple history." Last year went from 17 to 37 million. Is it safe to say he is predicting to sell over 20 million more than last quarter? If so 27 +20 = 47. With Apples conservatism is 47 million a conservative starting point? Or am I misinterpreting the statement?
Bill Shope - Goldman Sachs & Company: Can you walk through how you are thinking about the supply ramp for the iPhone 5 in the holiday quarter and how does some of the challenges you're facing relative to the strong demand compare to past iOS product launches?
Tim Cook - CEO: Bill, it's Tim. The demand for iPhone is extremely robust. We're thrilled with what we see. We are in a significant state of backlog right now. In terms of the production, our output has improved significantly since earlier this month, and I'm very, very pleased with the progress that we've made there. I'm pleased with the current level of output in what is the largest volume ramp in Apple's history. It's difficult to predict when supply and demand will balance, but I'm feeling very confident on our ability to supply quite a few iPhones.
