I agree as well...it could also be that Apple wanted to release the 9M number but not have them expect a crazy beat because of the extra 9M...they've beat by more than the high estimate since the new guidance without a revision. I believe the last "revision" was a "don't get carried away with the 9M, we were expecting that" revision.

I'm just another dumb bunny but I believe Apple sold 26 million iPads.
Why is this important? This number seemed the only real what if in the total equation because iPhone sales are there...GM can't be bad...ASP for the phone and pad will be solid....share count is 896-898 million......I'm still trying to get below the top end of revenue guidance.....just can't do it......like the two bank analysts, I'm admitting defeat....it's gotta be above 59 billion...deferrals won't dent this part of the equation...
I'm either really missing something..or not. Don't want to be disappointed with my $14.98 guess....which is not a stretch on any metric..

The other way to look at this is that Pete came to everybody and said " well , it's time to issue a revision because we are going to have a big beat and we want to be much more accurate in our reporting ", and Tim said "ya know Pete ever since we started doing this our stock has just sucked . Maybe we should go back to blowing the doors off earnings calls when we can. "

Not to be a negative nelly, but isn't it possible that Apple has to execute on all cylinders just to *meet* the top of their guidance range? Yes, they had an awesome quarter but perhaps an awesome quarter is *just* 58 billion and not 60 billion.

Yep. But it wasn't a big beat, was it? $500M, or 1.3% above their top range number?
Anyway, it just seems silly/weird to do a revision - within the original range, no less - when there is no requirement to even give guidance in the first place.
This will probably be one we never have an answer for. But subsequent quarters may reveal this as an anomaly.

[Rand] Paul said there may be cross-party support for tax changes to encourage U.S. companies to bring profits home from overseas. He said he asked Obama to consider taxing overseas profits at 5 percent, with the revenue going to infrastructure.
I won't link the story, because that was the only relevant blurb in an otherwise politically contentious article.
Assuming there is any truth to this, what do you think Apple would do with $100B dropped into Braeburn Capital's coffers? Special dividend?

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and Google Inc. today furthered their long-term cooperative partnership with a global patent cross-license agreement covering a broad range of technologies and business areas. The mutually beneficial agreement covers the two companies’ existing patents as well as those filed over the next 10 years.
“We’re pleased to enter into a cross-license with our partner Samsung,” said Allen Lo, Deputy General Counsel for Patents at Google. “By working together on agreements like this, companies can reduce the potential for litigation and focus instead on innovation.”
With this agreement, Samsung and Google gain access to each other’s industry-leading patent portfolios, paving the way for deeper collaboration on research and development of current and future products and technologies.
“This agreement with Google is highly significant for the technology industry,” said Dr. Seungho Ahn, the Head of Samsung’s Intellectual Property Center. “Samsung and Google are showing the rest of the industry that there is more to gain from cooperating than engaging in unnecessary patent disputes.”

I don't know of anyone in any industry that would set themselves up so perfection is expected and anything else is a disappointment? If Apple thought the best they could possibly would do is 58B, I don't think there's any way they'd guide to it.

Exactly. Three weeks into the quarter, without launching the iPad Air, the mini retina or the Mac Pro, or getting production of the 5s really rolling.,,apple said if it all goes wrong we sell 55 billion dollars of goods. If it goes well we sell 58 billion. We don't expect it to go very, very well. It's not prudent to estimate that.
I can't vouch for the numbers, but agree with premise. One thing, I doubt if Apple did borrow $50 billion in 2014 it would result in a credit downgrade, they do after all have $130 billion to cover the debt even though it is overseas.
Still waiting to be included in Apple's target market, in the meantime I own AAPL, an iMac, a MacBook Pro, an iPad mini, iPod shuffle and an iPhone. Still waiting on my xMac

NAS and S&P futures slightly green. Hoping the market selloff halts to allow some room for AAPL to run after (hopefully good) earnings.
Was just thinking, it would be just our luck if Apple finally announces a huge beat, and the Fed or something takes the whole market down before we could enjoy it. Hopefully some flight to Apple.
Am I being hyperbolic in saying, "biggest earnings-guidance announcement evah?"

Oppy'a guidance will only disappoint if it doesn't make sense in light of all the known facts. If in the conference call Apple explains that most CM sales will be in later quarters, no problem.
China Mobile iPhones should have no production issues. There shouldn't be a slow start without a clearly defined reason.
Well, at least we won't be kept waiting long.

If they assume low or no sales...problem
If OPPIE says that, "Toni the Tool" will ask him to elaborate.
AAPL will THEN tank.....

It does make a but nervous that apple is Really promoting this 30 bday of the Mac. Even going as far as having new employee store display changes and t-shirts. It's like they have nothing really in the pipeline for next several months or longer so they are filling void with something insignificant. I love apple and wish their mac a very happy bday but c'mon guys - bring on the thunder already.

"Terry Gou, speaking to reporters at the company’s 40th anniversary gathering on Sunday, said Hon Hai, also known by the trade name Foxconn, plans to relocate capital-intensive and high-tech manufacturing to the U.S., its largest market,” Luk reports. “‘Automation, software and technology innovation will be our key focus in the U.S. in the coming few years,’ Mr. Gou said.”

Maybe they should just keep quiet about the Mac.

The expert suggests iPhone sales at China Mobile will increase with subsidies in 6-9 months.
Yeah, someone posted that video a week or two ago. Good stuff.
And the expert actually said that CM felt it didn't need to subsidize for early adopters, up to 20-25 million of them who will buy it right away. After that, then they subsidize for the next wave, 6-9 months down the road. 20-25 million extra iPhones sold over the next 2-3 quarters from CM alone is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.
