Good morning folks... While you were sleeping: - Asia mixed but mostly down - Europe down - US futures also red Ukraine / Russia tensions seem to be what everyone is talking about with respect to the weaker markets this morning - in particular heading into a weekend. News on Apple: - WSJ reporting this morning that AAPL's additional buy back will be done with capital raised as it was before - through a debt sale. - Culf of Mac reporting that AAPL's iPad is crushing all its Android rivals combined in web traffic : www.cultofmac.com/276061/ipad-web-traffic-crushes-android-tablets-combined/ - more on iPhone 6 potential renderings - larger screen - curved corners, etc. from MacRumors: www.macrumors.com/2014/04/25/iphone6-renders-curved-display-rounded-corners/AAPL down $4.98 in PM on 18.5k shares...HBO has Game of Thrones and we have Game of PM...so be it but know it for what it is. Even if we are down a bit today - no worries. There are many traders that play ER and need to go home flat for the week. We may very well see some selling pressure today. IMHO it's a great buying opportunity which is why I kept some dry powder for later this afternoon. It's BTFD Friday! Congrats again to all the longs - drinks at the bar this evening will taste that much sweeter! Enjoy the day.

The year-over-year increase in Retail operating income during the second quarter and first six months of 2014 was primarily attributable to higher gross margin.

Mr. Cook spoke to the WSJ: www.iphonehacks.com/2014/04/tim-cook-talks-mobile-payments-patient-product-development-wsj-interview.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitterCook also commented on the possibility of mobile payments, calling it an “interesting area,” but stopping short of confirming the company is ready to move forward in this market. “I think it’s a really interesting area. We have almost 800 million iTunes accounts and the majority of those have credit cards behind them. We already have people using Touch ID to buy things across our store, so it’s an area of interest to us. And it’s an area where nobody has figured it out yet. I realize that there are some companies playing in it, but you still have a wallet in your back pocket and I do too which probably means it hasn’t been figured out just yet.” oooooh...

There are a lot of frigging geniuses out there that AAPL can afford - there are also companies like PayPal (ebay) that they can scoop up with their lunch money. WTF is the problem? Why do they have to create it from the ground up and not just buy someone and build upon it to make it better and then launch. Even with all the financial engineering ... as happy as I am, TC could have done this engineering a year ago and saved us all a lot of money and aggravation. I still don't think he cares about how long it's taking them to do things (new products). It bothers me that he didn't get really aggressive until an activist (Icahn put his feet to the fire.) We will never know if it was Icahn's prodding or the Board's decision to do this all along -- so no use debating it...HOWEVER, timing says the former. I just think - again, IMHO- that he (TC) has no sense of urgency. That's one of many things I miss about SJ...at least according to Isaacson's account. How can TC not have it figured out (on payments)? He doesn't need a bigger brain - just hire someone who does! He has the cash. What's the issue? Hire a few geniuses and stick them in a room and don't let them out till they have it figured out. It is not easy but it is not insurmountable - just get it done. Please oblige me - I haven't ranted in a while but the whole cryptic verbage that TC uses gets under my skin at times. To say he finds this area interesting is nonsense - get to the effing point and get it done.

Isn't that to be expected somewhat as they run out of places to put megastores and rely on smaller additional stores to increase their footprint?

Btw, AMZN giving back all it's gains. People looking at real metrics you suppose? Good for AAPL IMO.

PayPal solves an entirely different problem. Second, until TouchID what is the authentication mechanism? I am not even sure it is good enough yet. Finally, I agree with your concern on urgency. Just not about payments. That one has to be bullet proof or Apple loses trust and makes Maps look like a rain shower compared to a Cat 5 hurricane.

We agree on urgency and fool proof - and I threw PayPal out as an example but there may be technology within PayPal that may be of use in order to build upon. I don't understand technology well enough to know this but I do understand that somewhere out there there are people who could probably figure it out by collaborating with the internal geniuses at AAPL. Wonder who recruits for AAPL ? You can pluck from other companies - colleges - whatever. You have the check book so go find the talent. In every company there is talent who can be bought. Sorry, but I do believe everyone has their price in particular if they have been deprived their glory. Again, just my opinion.

I believe that Apple has been stealing domain experts from all over the place. We have seen concrete evidence in Medical Devices, and I think there was a story a while back about doing the same in Payments. I don't think they are trying to figure these things out all on their own.

Well Apple did patent a mobile payments system that would be disruptive. There was a discussion over at Braeburn forums and Apple has the attention of the major players in the payments sector. Which players will be cut out, how much the retailers save and what Apple could profit from this is a balancing act and very complex.
And yes the security will have to be bullit proof.

anyone think GOOG or AMZN is worth buying at this point? or are their days numbered and they could be the next to lose its momentous gains?

It's easy to grow top line when you sell everything at little or no profit ... sometimes at a loss. Everyone talks about Bezos (BOZOS) "turning on the switch" and attempting to actually make money, I think they will be in for a nasty surprise. I must admit I'm having a ball watching the stock dive this morning .... even though it's been a juggernaut the last few years.

It's game over for the HFT fucktards who play apple like a piñata. APPLE now has wind at its back and the market makers know it. Get on the bus.

I concur and they are finally getting what they deserve (valuation-wise). I don't have any holdings in either stock and really don't plan to but my mom keeps wanting me to buy goog and i just don't want her to be right. lol Anyway, have a good weekend.

I want that close over 570.
Let's send a message to the markets today. After yesterday's massive gap up, a followup today over 570 would be just too sweet. Buy the dip, indeed...dipped to 563.
I jinxed the late day action yesterday and JD smited (smote?) me....not today!

I bought the dip earlier today. All green and ready for next week. Watch people buy it ahead of institutions nibbling (gobbling?) next week.

Mobile payments is a big step, and I don't think they need PayPal (and the costs of acquisition). I think it's a 2014 initiative, so who cares if it's next week or last half of 2014. If Apple buys PayPal, it gets a customer list, true, but customers will migrate to Apple offering a better service at lower cost. Integrating PayPal and its people is probably more trouble than its worth. My patience has been tried as well and it's probably the biggest difference with Apple post-SJ, who pushed, pushed, pushed. Tim is no pushover, far, far from it. But no one lit a fire under people like SJ.
