Research firm comScore this afternoon reported its tally of the growth in cellular subscriber numbers in the U.S. in the month of August, which reflects a higher-than average increase in ownership of Apple‘s (AAPL) iPhone and and basically flat to declining status for other major manufacturers.
Measured by handset hardware ownership, including both smartphones and non-smartphones, Apple saw a 2.1-point increase in its percentage of U.S. mobile subscribers versus the three-month average ending in May, said comScore, for 17.1% share.
Apple’s hardware increase preceded its release of the iPhone 5 last month.
That gave Apple third place behinds Samsung Electronics (005930KS) at number one, with 26%, and LG at second place with 18%. Samsung’s share was unchanged from the prior period while LG’s dropped by about a point. Google‘s (GOOG) Motorola Mobility unit saw a similar decline, and HTC (2498TW) saw a fractional rise.
Measured by smartphone platform, Apple saw a 2.4-point rise, for 34.3%, giving it second place behind Google’s Android, which had a 1.7-point rise, totaling 52.6%.
Research in Motion’s (RIMM) BlackBerry platform came in at third place, with a 3-point decline, dropping to 8.3%, Microsoft’s (MSFT) Windows Phone platform was down fractionally, dropping to 3.6%, and so was Nokia‘s (NOK) older operating system environment, Symbian, dropping to 0.7% share.
