Mossberg always seems to be about twenty years late with his epiphanies. Mossburg's idea of "ambient computing" is little more than a renaming of "ubiquitous computing" described by Alan Kay, who we can thank for modern GUI's and the iPad. You can find articles on it as early as 2002. I wish him a long and enjoyable retirement.

You can find articles on it as early as 2002. I wish him a long and enjoyable retirement. It's not Mossberg's fault. He is pointing out what is just about to happen, technologically. Earlier concepts were largely theoretical modeling. Now it is slowly starting to happen. There is always about a 20 years gap (or more) between initial science and wide utilization in society. Check silicon transistors, lasers, fiber optics, various generation of computing, cell phones, etc.
