AAPL is out of favour - leading big tech on the way down and lagging on the way up. It's only been a couple of days but I hope this doesn't continue.
Go TSLA!

Bloomberg: Tim Cook finally reveals more about Apple's plans for self-driving carsLink includes a couple of videos. Nice that it's out in the open. In my opinion, no way this doesn't include a hardware product (ie car) - that's where Apple will make their margin. Self-driving technology already exists - everyone is doing it and it gets better every day. Apple isn't going to get any meaningful licensing revenue from their version of it.

Agreed.
Why would you work on self driving technology and then rely on someone else for hardware?
Apple does not operate this way unless is HomeKit. The difference is that car manufacturers will not give up their technology for Apples.
This means Apple will build from scratch and not buy another car company. I think it will be a long time. I thought 2021 was a good time frame but I would venture closer to 2025 now.

Here is a review of the new iPad Pro from John Gruber. Note again his references to how Apple's in-house chip development has provided the kind of improvements that can get overlooked until one returns to a device without them.

We have all become aware that China has become a problem for Apple, but Apple in China Report 2017: A Deep Dive Into Apple’s China Troubles accentuates just how dire things have become, and how difficult it may be to overcome them. In particular, the area that Apple has been emphasizing in recent financial updates, Services, has been devastated in China. WARNING: This is a 110 slide presentation, but even a quick review will give you a good idea of the challenge in turning this around.

There was an article from Ben Thompson that made the problem so clear. iOS has close to zero advantage over Android in China. Why? Because people spend almost all the time on their device using Wechat, which has so many features that it's practically an OS itself. So an expensive iPhone, especially one that has not seen a major redesign in three years (status is a big factor in China more than anywhere else) becomes a very questionable purchase.

I agree, tuffet.
My former wife is Chinese, and spends 6 months a year there. She will confirm, WeChat is huge in China.
I hope Apple is learning what WeChat offers (e.g. people to people payments) before Android beats Apple in that direction.

AAPL is out of favour - leading big tech on the way down and lagging on the way up. It's only been a couple of days but I hope this doesn't continue... Seems like we are in, or getting into, "broken" status. In the past two years, anyone could easily "break" AAPL. Any news, literally any news, true or fabricated FUD, would break AAPL and make it drop or kill its momentum. The story is different this year in that AAPL showed strength like it did in early 2012. This is the first time this year where AAPL looks like it can still be beaten down and tamed. +1 to "hope this doesn't continue."

Nice modest recovery for AAPL today, up $1 plus. A few more days like this would be fine with me. Hope they jumped on the buybacks yesterday.

That and IMO...the fact that the Chinese like most everyone wants a bigger screen to carry around and use as their main and only computer. Especially in China. The iPhone 4.5 SE does not cut it. All had to do was make a SE internal component phone with a bigger screen even if the remaining real estate in it is empty, and cost a dollar more. This would put iOS in a bunch more hands.

In terms of China and Wechat, it doesn't matter one bit what Apple does to iMessage. Wechat is part of Chinese culture and they're not switching away from it for the 10% that own iOS devices. The features will be good for the rest of us and I look forward to using them, but it doesn't solve the China problem. Agree that a large screen SE-like cheapish phone might work well, along with more frequent design updates.

Amazing how people can extrapolate existential threats to Apple based on two sessions of trading.

Amazing how people can extrapolate existential threats to Apple based on two sessions of trading. These threats have been apparent for a while, and they are not exisistential. Amazing how people can misunderstand basic dialogue so easily...
