I’m speaking to anyone that cares to give me a guess: you think people on this site ( if they are buying) are buying the 8 or the X? Having an internal family debate and the X people aren’t making a compelling argument for the higher cost. I looked on site for the comparisons but nothing really HUGE . Any responses would be sincerely appreciated.

I will be buying an X as soon as they are generally available.
Glad to see AAPL over $175. 😉

The 8 is the 7 and the 6S and the 6 - no difference but speed, really. If you’re looking for a real change - Face ID, OLED full-phone screen, super cameras, animojis (?!) - then the 8 isn’t it. It’s a fine phone at a much lower price - but it’s no X... That help?

The simple argument is the same one used for real estate .... one generally does not buy a house outright they finance it and at that point it's always about the payment. As crazy as it sounds people look at their phone purchases the same way , if you had to pay the entire amount up front sales would tank. Therefore it's not $300 more for the X it's just a few dollars more per month ... frankly I can't believe people would spend that but they do and I'm happy about it.
You could also take into account people's iPhone replaces laptops and has really become an important way to communicate .... it's an essential part of our being.
When AAPL hits $200 .... I get an iPhone X AND a new Apple Watch !!!! I let them buy phones for me : )
Cheers to the longs ....

Bought the 256GB Silver X For me personally, it was the best choice because of two things: 1 - Always wanted the larger screen size of the Plus but HATED its big size. Now I got the best of both worlds. This was a HUGE selling point for me. 2 - The aperture on the telephoto part of the lens. X is faster at f2.4 'with' OIS while the 8+ is 2.8. Makes a difference to me. I'm always taking pics and vids of my 6-year-old girl and 3-year-old twin boys. Although I use a Lumix GH4 often with primes, the best camera, as they say, is the one that you have with you at the moment and I always have my phone with me. So the iPhone with the best camera specs got my money.

I (we) will likely get an 8, and wait for the X technologies to be mainstreamed for the next cycle. I use my phone much less than my iMac and iPad, now that I am retired. We are desperate for a new iMac, as the one we have is the worst Apple computer we've owned since the Performa. The lack of information about possible new iMacs has been a real disappointment.

I thought about the X, but because of the major new advances in it, I wanted to give it a year in the 'wild' and let Apple fine tune it into whatever the next model is called. I'm not suggesting the current model isn't worth it, but I've been on the two year "s" cycles of phone since the 4s.

Me, I am just cheap. Different wants and needs.

I went to the Apple Store to get an iPad (mini of course) and picked up an iPhone 8. Love at first sight. I didn't want to put it down. I don't know why, but it just felt right. It was that uniquely Apple experience of everything being just as it should be. I walked around the table and saw the iPhone X. Knees got weak and I forgot about the iPhone 8. It reminds me of buying a top end car or audio equipment. At some level the specs fall away and you realize that it is by necessity an emotional experience. I used to drive a Lotus. They had an ad that said "We don't compete against other cars, we compete against sex" Only someone who drove one understood that ad. I think the choice between the 8 and the X is that kind of decision. Phoebes, i have read enough of your posts to know you understand what I am doing such a poor job of expressing.

I was planning on getting the 8 for me, and the 8 plus for my wife, both moving up from 5S's. For me on the 8, I like that it has the same processor as the 8+ and X, and it's screen size will be a big improvement. While I could justify the X, I'm using it skiing and mountain biking, and so the lower cost is in a way a build in insurance plan. And while I take pics and read stuff on the ski lift, truthfully I don't use my iPhone that often. For the 8+, my wife often reads on her's for (what seems like?) hours at night instead of the laptop. And she complains about the camera on ours. I figured one of us should get the nicer camera, and so she could have it. For the X, at first I didn't see a reason to get it, but in reading Pogue's article and others, and thinking about it as a small extravagance that we actually would use, I was ready to instead get this one for my wife. But whether I talked it down too much before or whatever, when I mentioned it this weekend she said she wanted the 8+, and didn't see the extra $200 value in the X. We have 3 kids (no phones yet, but they are heading that way, eventually), and frankly have been surprised that in the 6 years we've owned iPhones, than none have broken. We put them in cases so they have had some protection, and my wife's audio port isn't working, though the external headset still works. By and large they have done well, but a $700-$1149 object that you have with you nearly all the time, it's a lot of value that could easily break. Likewise, it is a computer that is with you all the time, and so it does have a lot of value. Since the main carriers aren't really having any deals, I'm looking at buying them outright and going with one of the lower cost options or even prepaid. I was looking at VirginMobile, but there are some incredibly inexpensive prepaid options out there. Like Red Pocket, which says you can go with any of the carrier's coverages. Porting your number doesn't work on some if you are with them already, but we can go from AT&T to Verizon. At something like $100 per year for each of us, we'd save around $1k/year, paying for our 2 phones with the savings in 2 years. By not missing out on any special offers elsewhere, if it doesn't work out we can just switch back, continuing to use the iPhones we buy outright. It's looking like a great option to me right now, especially for people that don't chew through tons of data or minutes. www.ebay.com/itm/132043269270?rmvSB=true While I try not to be cheap, I do try to look at the value in things. I like the screen of the X, and the facial technology is cool. While I didn't realize there was a difference in the camera between the 8+ and X, it's looking right now that we will go with the 8 and 8+.

I have a X and wow. I haven't felt this way about a new iPhone for as long as I can remember. It has all of the tangible benefits you can read about, but it is also extremely good looking, the Plus benefits in a non-Plus package are a revelation, and incredibly well built. It oozes quality and class.
Apple builds and sells experiences. The experience of ownership of X vs the 7+ I had is night and day, and an absolute bargain for the price difference.

I have a friend who was all set to buy a X phone but she thinks the 8Plus has a larger screen so she will buy the Plus. Is she right? My nephew bought an X and he likes it. I have 7 Plus that I am happy with. At home I am always using my Airpad 2 and I don’t think that would change with X. My wife has a 6 Plus, she has no interest in upgrading. My son and daughter both have a 7 and they are on upgrade plan, as well as me, but I would rather keep our phones for another year and then sell and use the cash to help pay for whatever comes after X. My brother has a 7 on upgrade program and he is planning on buying X. I bought AirPods for my wife and me and we both like them. I am planning to buy Apple Watch with data. As of now my wife is not interested. We switched from Spotify to Apple Music family plan and all of us love it

My iPhone X, ordered at around 12:25 am on day one(I hit snooze), was supposed to arrive Nov 17-24th. I just got notification it will arrive tomorrow, the 8th. I’m so glad the worst of the supply handwringing appears to be overblown. I’m on the yearly upgrade program, as all longs ought to be! Looking forward to ordering a couple of homepods next month.

I joined the annual upgrade program a year ago. On the afternoon of October 27th I got around to ordering a 64 Gb iPhone X. I was notified it would arrive about December 15th. This morning I was notified that my X was in the process of shipping and I should receive it on the 16th of this month. This worries me just a little. How could lead-time go from eight weeks to three weeks in 11 days? I suspect 64 Gb is part of the answer.

I have a friend who was all set to buy a X phone but she thinks the 8Plus has a larger screen so she will buy the Plus. Is she right?... No. Stop her right now! If she's okay with the notch (not a big deal, really) here are some details for her: X has a screen size of 5.8" --vs-- 8+ at 5.5" (screens are always measured diagonally) X resolution is 2436x1125 (OLED - Super Retina with high pixel density) --vs-- 8+ with 1920x1080 (LCD - HD but not as crisp & clear as the X) X has a smaller footprint (5.6"x2.8" easier to hold and operate with one hand) --vs-- 8+ (6.25"x3.1" because of bezel all around and home button)
