So many people being damaged by Apple preventing their iPhones from shutting down unexpectedly when the battery has degraded sufficiently.
For those now suing Apple, slower performance and stability is apparently less damaging then unpredictable shutdowns and potential loss of data.
The only way, in this perfect universe, that a customer couldn't be "damaged" by Apple would be: batteries that don't wear out over time.
Why hasn't Apple developed a perfect battery which doesn't degrade? That must obviously be the right solution.
No perfect battery? Damaged. Class action lawsuits.
***
This is silly. And not surprising. Lacking any actual "gates" to froth about in the media from iPhone 8/X, now we have something else. BatteryGate?
I read a modified version of this complete (forget which site) where the meme was: why doesn't Apple provide a less expensive way of replacing the battery? Why is it so hard to do (for less) or "expensive" ($79) for Apple outside of AppleCare?
Why isn't there any easy slide in/out battery replacement?
This is also silly. And in the case of a tech writer, whoever it was, let's assume they're reasonably competent and intelligent. They know "why", they're just not saying.
Why? It wouldn't be the same product.
it wouldn't be as lightweight/slim because: user removable components; brackets/clips to hold them in place; rails to slide them on; and the physical re-engineering of the device to allow this (whether it's through a "slot" or through an easily removable backs etc) would physically change the iPhone for the worse. it would be by definition larger and clunkier. Also less able to stand up to drops and punishment.
But anyway: this too will pass. Another gate. The stock doesn't mind.

I don't disagree with anything you said, but Apple could have avoided some of the criticism by announcing the problem and their intended mitigation. If they wanted to go the extra mile, they could have added a way to enable/disable the "fix."

Also: some more feedback on the X after a few weeks of use.
- Love the notch. (and the look of it!)
- Love FaceID.
- Love not having to continually click a Home button. Gentle swipe-up from the bottom feels like the perfect gesture. So Zen. This is what the UI is like now: You are gently floating in a gentle universe of apps. Swipe and gesture to move through the universe. Touch an app to use it. Gently swipe up and your app beautifully and gently transforms itself back into the icon in the universe. All animations are perfectly smooth, lubricated, luxurious. They feel like a physical and metaphysical thing. Processor speed and high refresh rate probably have a lot to do with this. Must be actually used and experienced to appreciate.
- Love how app switching works with new gestures. Luxurious and zen, like the above. Gently swipe up and pause by a blink, then as you release you're in the app switcher and you can gently/luxuriously swipe horizontally through your apps, like a perfectly and smoothly floating deck of cards. All perfectly done within the floating universe.
- I find no downside at all to this compared to pre-X iPhones with a Home Button. This is better for me in every way.
- Even after weeks of using it, the experience is still way-pleasurable vs. any pre-X iPhone. This is the most frictionless iPhone ever created. It does feel like Magic. The physical feel with (a) the glass back, (b) the new screen and bevel, (c) the apparently magic lubricant qualities of this new glass, which feels unlike any other pre-X iPhone glass, is the best. I don't feel like I'm going to drop it (and I'm -not- using a case). it feels effortless to swipe over the screen.
- I haven't needed to use the lightning-connector-earbuds and they remain coiled in the box. I use the AirPods if I want to listen to music.
- The built-in speaker quality is amazing (at least compared to all previous iPhones I've used, the latest of which was a 6S+) Shockingly better. Loud, clean, in stereo and sounds like it's emanating from the screen, in both orientations.
- Battery life has been great. Better than any previous iPhone.
- The GLASS is MUCH MORE SCRATCH RESISTANT! than either the 6 or 6S+ (my most recent previous iPhones) and is more in line with the better scratch resistance I remember from the 4S (if not better). There is not a SINGLE mark on the display after being in/out of my pocket without a case for the past few weeks. Not even a micro-scratch. This is AMAZING. Something they'd done in the 6-series (and I believe also the 7) had made the glass much more susceptible to scratches - I believe they softened it up to trade off for less brittleness/breakage from drops and impacts. This was very obvious to me. An iPhone 4S screen was pretty touch and showed only major scratches from not being careful enough and a few drops. The 6 and 6S+ showed cosmetic scratches and microscratches almost immediately after being pocketed. Now looking at the back (I have silver): there's some slight scratching/scuffing on the edge of the lower corner diagonally opposite to the camera bump, probably from sliding around on my desk. Who cares. The rest of the back is flawless. My expectation is that given reasonable care, and even without a case, this iPhone will retain more of it's "new out of box" appearance far longer (indefinitely?) than any other iPhone.
Can't be happier. Would greatly prefer this over any previous iPhone on a daily use basis.
Final note: I also picked up a new 10.5" iPad Pro and Pencil (couldn't resist the Target extension of $150 Black Friday discount). $499 + $99 + $tax for 64GB. Tremendous value, hugely fast, great! But: it's still TouchID/Home button and not full edge-to-edge. I can see myself getting another iPad when they've added FaceID in another generation or two, and the screen area gets even larger within the same form factor. Touch ID feels dated; I want Face ID. Some of the feel of the X is there re: the new app switcher, swipe up from bottom edge to get there, etc. but the full X-effect would be even more of an improvement.

hopefully this [battery] kerfuffle will knock the hubris out of their sails (I think their enduring success has lead to a little bit of a build up of late)
doesn’t hurt for them to be grounded once in a while
treat ‘em mean, keep ‘em keen

the new app switcher, swipe up from bottom edge to get there, etc. I echo the overall enjoyment of Face ID, and the notch as a non-issue. Coming from an SE, I do miss the compactness. If/when they add edge-to-edge to an SE form factor, I'll side-grade.

Because of the new tax law, we won't see any profit taking until the new year.
It's been a massive run, any wags on the extent of the pull back in Jan '18 -- I don't think we breach $170+, but volume levels could be interesting until earnings week.

Because of the new tax law, we won't see any profit taking until the new year. Not sure why you say that. Looks like capital gains rates aren't changing from 2017 to 2018 (the hated 3.8% ACA tax remains much to my dismay). I am taking profits now in Dec rather than in Jan* in the hopes of keeping my AGI within the child tax credit eligibility range next year. * I am referring to all the options that are expiring in Jan '17, not to shares that I can hold indefinitely without taking capital gains until I am ready to.

Merry Christmas all!
So thankful this Christmas that Apple bought me a home to have my family over on holidays.
However, I am not as enamored of the iPhone X as dmiller is.
I moved from a 7 Plus (and gifted it to my GF for Christmas replacing her dying 6).
Face ID is cool. It even works when I'm wearing sunglasses. But what is the point of a hands-free unlock if I still have to use my finger to swipe up to get to the home screen? (which I want to do 90% of the time instead of seeing notifications). There should be an option to change this so you can go straight to home upon unlock. Maybe blink your eyes to go home or something. Also, no way to add a second face like with Touch ID. I also kind of miss that little haptic finger buzz validation.
I also feel that I have dropped in screen size; I notice the ~ 1/3 inch smaller width. I'd like a larger/wider version. My eyes aren't what they used to be, and I have large hands, and this phone feels like a screen downgrade, regardless of resolution or contrast.
And switching access to the control center from swipe up to swipe down is sure to confuse and annoy people. Hard enough training 70-somethings how do use iOS without, "oh by the way, my phone does the exact opposite of yours." If they are going to change what iOS does, they should do it all at once or not at all.
Thinking of "downgrading" to an 8 Plus. Just my unvarnished opinion.
Let's hope for a 2018 in the 200's.
