Like how your picture ties into your screen name, chinacat. It’s a great tune - good one!

I am currently a bit annoyed with our favorite fruit company. Skip ahead now to avoid a probably-too-long whine. All music is played on our iMac. We have two speaker systems, one in the living room and one in the den. The speakers in the living room are connected through a stereo receiver using an Airport Express; the ones in the den are similarly connected via an Apple TV. Recently the Airport Express speakers lost their ability to change volume when it is changed on the iMac; the Apple TV speakers still work fine. It seems obvious that this is related to some software change made due to the recent decision to discontinue the Airport Express, although I have not seen any notice of such a change. Up until now, I have been able to change the volume for both sets of speakers by using my iPhone to control the volume in iTunes on our iMac, but now the Airport Express no longer responds to volume changes on the iMac. Apple usually does a good job maintaining some level of support on discontinued devices, but this seems like an obvious oversight. If anyone has relevant information, please pass it along. I'll be visiting the local Apple Store to see if they have any answers.

I have an Airport Express also I used for streaming iTunes over speakers in my shop. It has since been regulated to the tech graveyard. Shame. I tried to manage it via the airport utility and can no longer get to it as it's no longer supported.
While my home theater is still hooked up to my AppleTV I have switched to streaming over a pair of bluetooth speakers. Much easier to manage and more options to play. I guess I'm just getting old but this stuff is getting too complex and charges too fast to keep up with. I have better things to do with my time. And this from a former UNIX engineer. I'm starting to hate tech.

Me too. Too old, too complex, despite a PhD in Computer Science.

Me three. Decades in tech but much less patience now to deal with complexities and lengthy explanations. “Better things to do with my time” is a good way to put it.

Hi Chinacat,
I understand your frustration ... if you haven't looked into using a Sonos product I'd highly recommend it as it's a pretty seamless integration with iTunes and almost any other streaming service you can think of.
Control with either your iPhone or use Alexa ..... works great and 0 headaches.

I'm starting to hate tech. Cousin! Also was a UNIX-head most of my career, programmer to partner. I guess I don't see what's so hard; they have the software, and I can't believe that there is that much overhead in keeping it running. Everyone talks about the installed base, so why did they do something to annoy some segment of it, especially without providing a substitute or migration path? I also have a couple of bluetooth speakers, one in the upstairs bedroom and one in my car, that I use with my iPhone, but the ones in the living room are high quality and it's nice to be able to experience some favorite tunes with better sound sometimes, whether it's the complexity of the Boston Symphony Orchestra or the overtones of Coltrane.
