Pretty good week, all in all, especially considering that it mainly consisted of clearing the decks. Given the many skeptical previews of The Big Show on Monday, the price action was more optimistic than I expected, if a bit choppy.
One thing that could be interesting is to see what metrics the pundits/critics develop to judge the success of the service offerings. Although they stopped reporting units for iPhones, can they not report subscription numbers for the services?
I think it's nonsense that Apple is reinventing itself as a services company. The Monday thing is certainly part of a strategic move, but comparing it to the introduction of the iPhone is just wrong. I would say it's an evolution of their strategy to maintain platform dominance. I don't think the strategy would be any different even if iPhone sales were still rapidly accelerating.
