Whoa dude, mind blown.
***
First 2019-nCoV death occurred in US in Washington State. I'm sure that will scare everyone, but only 15,999 to go to match garden variety seasonal flu deaths in the US this year.
I saw a Chinese girl wearing a mask in a grocery store last night, and I confess, I harbored a secret, fleeting desire to punch her in the face. I've just had it. The Chinese have cut over a trillion in market cap off of US stocks because of their bullshit, and they're running around wearing masks like idiots to add to the senseless panic? Ugh, just ugh.
And yes I know she was a Chinese national because of where I live (right near UCI). And no it has nothing to do with her race (a US-born Chinese person wouldn't be acting like this). I'm just sick of China in general. Let's fire China and move the supply chain to India.

Your sarcasm may very well be warranted, JD, but I’ll just point out that he could have meant “...you spend more to take advantage of the situation.”

JDSoCal: Suggestion: Before you have more thoughts of punching a girl in the face (or anyone else) because she is wearing a mask in public, consider that she might have been wearing the mask in an attempt to protect others (like you for example).
Very disappointing to read your post.

His racism is disgusting. JD, did you make the same argument about the Reagan administration’s failed response to HIV? Did you feel like punching Republicans in the face? Doubtful. A virus has no nationality. Did the CCP handle this well? Definitely not, but this is way more complex then blaming an entire citizenry. You're shameful.

We don't see masks used much in town, outside of the ski resort on a cold day, but it's not uncommon to see them in the bay area, even without a "scary unknown" virus going around. OTOH, I was at Home Depot in Carson City a couple days ago, and an employee said someone came in and bought out all of their masks. I don't have a problem with people buying masks, to use them, stockpile them, or mail them elsewhere. OTOH, I could see limiting sales a bit especially at the likes of Home Depot, so that people that need a dust mask can still buy one. The the medical community should be able to buy them direct, and should have priority over those distributors sending them elsewhere. It always bugs me to work under the house or whatnot, kicking up dust and fiberglass. Normally I don't put a mask on, neither a nicer disposable or the good rubber one with cartridge filters, but seeing that they were selling 100 packs for $8 (before Amazon sold out), that's cheap cheap. I'll be buying some...once they are back, maybe in 6 months. But I think I'd just head to Raleys when they open at 7am, than do my shopping when throngs of people are in the stores.

I flew into Cabo two weeks ago. . . only saw one family that was wearing a mask among a crowd of probably 500+ that were trying t get through immigration. And I don't think I have seen anyone in the wild wearing a mask; albeit, I have heard that they are sold out locally.
On a related topic, my mother often wore mask in public because she had had a lung transplant.

There have been studies showing that one cause of racism is irrational fear. Our primitive brains, triggered by uncontrollable fear, can default to tribal identification. This mental process makes someone dehumanize the “other” tribe, marking the other as the cause of the fear that’s creating mental discomfort... leading to scapegoating and racism. It’s rare to see such a clear and obvious example as this. Although it’s easy for our primitive brains to default to this pattern, it’s up to all of us as civilized humans to try to overcome our biology and use rationality and empathy to resist the temptation. We’re all in it together on this unique blue marble of ours.

First off, go fuck yourself. Now that we have the insult contest done, the modern definition of racism is disagreeing with a liberal. This had nothing to do with her “race” you dipshit. She was wearing a mask because of her ass-backward, failed government and culture. These fuckos in China are totally failing at public health and they have cost me like a million dollars, so fuck them for their shitty system. And when I see someone with a mask, I’m going to point and laugh at them. As I said, a US-born 100% Chinese person would not act is such a ridiculous manner. My contempt for primitive-acting people has nothing to do with their race (you’re trash, and I’d like to punch you in the face, and I presume you are white, no?). What libs don’t get is that their bad faith, “racism” as hammer has exactly zero meaning to normal, sane people. You call us racist for voting for Trump, so why should we care? You think political incorrect comments or jokes are “racist.” You’re fucking nuts. Well, I think I’ve spread enough pixie dust for one day!

And, lol, “a US-born Chinese person wouldn’t be acting like this.” People everywhere are wearing masks, and making generalizations about people according to their race is pretty much racist.

Yep, most of the racists I’ve met don’t believe they’re racists even though they say and sometimes do racist things. And they always show a lack of compadpssion and empathy in dealing with other races. Apple does not condone this behavior and neither should we.

JD’s post was not at all racist. He made an intelligent series of observations. And note, the Surgeon General has advised against buying masks for protection.
Also note, this discussion board would not at all be as good without him.

I am reading "The Mass Psychology of Fascism" by Wilhem Reich. He was a contemporary of Freud who tried to explain how Hitler was able to rise to power. I recommend it, or at least reading the Wikipedia entry here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mass_Psychology_of_FascismI think it is relevant to what is happening now and gives a perspective to rants like J.D.'s. I have some personal experience with racism that may be worth sharing. I was born in the South to parents who had moved from New York during the war as part of the Manhattan project. I was not blind to the racism around me, but in my home, I heard nothing but the tolerance and acceptance you would expect from New Yorkers. There was an undertone of racism that came from the family history as slave owners up to the Civil War. Nonetheless, growing up in the segregated South, I could indulge the fantasy that I was beyond racial prejudice. In 1972, I took a job at Goddard Spaceflight Center in Maryland. Suddenly, I was in a situation where blacks outnumbered whites 10 to one. I am ashamed to admit that I became a racist. I envied their privilege from the excesses of affirmative action in the early 70's and felt the situation was unjust. Although I lived in Annapolis, I was seldom went into D.C. except for work. Then in 1974, my wife and I spent 6 months traveling independently in South America. We traveled by bus and train down the Pan-American highway to Peru and backpacked in the Andes, crossed to the eastern slopes and lived with indigenous people for a while. This was so remote that few of them spoke Spanish. Quechua was the preferred language. We then returned to D.C., broke and enriched. I was lucky enough to be re-hired into my old job, but we had lost the place in Annapolis. Looking for a cheap apartment,we moved into a black ghetto in D.C.. Before the trip, I would not have considered it, but after walking through Barranquilla, Colombia or Guayaquil, Ecuador, D.C. was like a church picnic. We lived there for a year, made many friends and never had a problem. I realized how much my racism was based in fear. Both the fear I had been taught and the fear from vulnerability. If you scan the report written by WHO available here: www.who.int/docs/default-source/coronaviruse/situation-reports/20200301-sitrep-41-covid-19.pdf?sfvrsn=6768306d_2you can see that China did a great service to the world. Their epidemic is under control. The data is convincing and compelling. Read about how the data was collected and tell me that the U.S. or any democracy can be this effective in controlling the spread. I am not blaming trump or the Republicans for our response. Our country is founded on a belief in individual responsibility. We have to impose our own quarantines. But somehow I do not see us building a hospital in 10 days for those infected. Wrapping this up, I feel that Yes, J.D.'s rant was racist and probably made him feel good at the expense of the board. But I am willing to cut him some slack. a million here and million there, pretty soon if begins to add up.

heh, heh, everybody, it's time for a group hug. We are all God's children. Love & light. We're losing sight of what's really going on here with this corona virus scare. It's just theater. They all gotta get their buy backs in. As Mike Ruppert would say "CIA is Wall Street, and Wall Street is CIA". It'll all be over before you know it (like magic!). And maybe sooner than you think, so get yer buys in soon. I think our AFB may be infaltrated by CIA sock puppets. I'mean, who brought AIDS into the conversation? Did I miss something? Hasn't every body seen "House of Numbers" or "The Other Side of AIDS" yet? C'mon, we should all be beyond that at this point. Jeez, you'd think they'd limit that stuff to lame social media sites but alas, the CIA is everywhere and nowhere. but more importantly... I don't know if you caught this one but... I can't believe their letting the cat outta the bag on this one. Perhaps their original virus scare strategy is backfiring with the general public, and this is, what they call in football, an Audible at the line of scrimmage. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGwkXF3bNd0(damage control for media integrity?) In other words, are they finally ADMITTING this Corona thing is a hoax? or are we all supposed to keep pretending for a bit longer? [please advise] Special Agent 86 - signing off.

nice.... a few down days and the board gets ....open racism (with a dollop of a misogyny.... shit on a shit sandwich so to speak) ....open insults at other members of the board ('go fuck yourself', 'asshole' and all that) ....coronavirus hoax conspiracy theories
last may AAPL fell about the same amount... near 20% (215 to 173) and many of us felt due to trump rhetoric on china.... (and hey, some even lost a million dollars on paper in the process! )
and i don't think anyone of us even suggested punching trump in the face! (as opposed to an asian female, you see)
...but there were long talks about civility and being careful to choose one's language... and lstream's post even got deleted....
not these days, i reckon? nothing about dungeons or calling people out on civility.... should i take it as a sign that's it's ok to finally start talking shit about trump and go to dick jokes? what say you, 4aapl?
(p.s. not asking for permission, obviously.... i've moved on largely as arguing is pointless... just observing the hypocrisy, that's all... carry on )

It's OK to question the integrity of the media.
It shouldn't make one be labeled as a Conspiracy Kook.
We are indoctrinated in our culture to believe that the media is a watch dog and always has our back. This is a dangerous mindset to be in.
Having worked in the Entertainment/media business for many years, I can tell that's not true.
Don't believe me?
OK, than why is that every media outlet covers the same stories every day?
Sometimes even reading the exact same copy?
"Before it's news, it's Reuters."
But what is it (or more accurately, who is it) before it's Reuters?
OK, here's a brief description of the news stream...
It starts at the: Council on Foreign Relations > Reuters, AP, UPI, ect. > News Outlets > Our minds.
The Council on Foreign Relations was started by the Rockefellers and J P Morgan Jr. in 1919.
There was a precursor to it started by Cecil Rhodes in the 1890s. It was called the Round Table Group.
The Council on Foreign Relations was started with the expressed purpose of organizing all the (high circulation) news outlets to move in lock step with one another in order to control what news and information people hear.
What we see/hear on a daily basis on an International/National level is a carefully crafted narrative. And what I discovered, and the mind blower is, it may or may not even be real.
Yes, they can get away with that (think Tonkin Bay Incident).
At the local news level, it's part reiterating the International/National news, part local Agenda (if any), & then some local color (usually lighter stuff).
This configuration makes it all appear, as long as you don't look too close, that we have a free and independent media.
Yes, granted my discussions are from a very sophisticated perspective (sorry about that) but every once in a while, the general public's reactions just get to me, and I have to do an enlightenment session.
And when that happens, if one is not used to hearing such challenges, the only way that one can process this data is to say "gee that like sounds like crazy conspiracy stuff".
So, it's (almost) hopeless.
I'm realistic enough to know that some people's minds will never be changed regardless of how much pruff you show them.
But maybe sometimes, some people might get it, and be the better investor/person for it.
A good example would be like, we, on this AFB know better when we see FUD about Apple, but how many Normies in the world read that stuff and react/panic sell?
It's the same thing with other kinds of news for some us.
But hey, with all that said it's important to remember, when we're putting forth something that's outside the status quo, that we not let it turn into a shouting match, because then all communication breaks down.
Peace.

Oh Walter, we missed you so much. Ya know, some of us use your, "excitability", as a tell for where the market hysteria is at. Yes, you are Sponge-like It worked in May, and then it went away....for a bit. Sadly, there were threatening comments made back there too. Wasn't it something like "I know people with guns". No shoe tossing there. There's a reason that shop owners board up their windows and get the heck out of there before a riot, just as rubber bullets, tear gas, and water hoses may be used. At times people get a bit crazy, for a variety of reasons. In our context, it's when a wall of worry item potentially goes big, and more than just the fringe start to worry about it in big terms that are hard to quantify. So yea, I can publicly scold people, delete messages, or even ban people. But a little later, lets say a month later, when things have calmed down, where are you at? We're already on the brink here, with a good posting of links, but some days where there just isn't much discussion about them or other things. I don't like what I see here in the last week, but it's in response to a hard to quantify threat that has caused AAPL and the market to plunge. Like the stereotypical drill sergeant, there is a focus for the displeasure. I'm more worried about the stuff that is much more polarized, namely politics. And yes, that has been thrown into it too, since just like everything the virus is being seen as being used. Sadly, the coronavirus thread went from being a fact sharing area in a time of few facts, to a name calling and politicizing rant. We can do better, and we will. Lets start with trying a bit this week on the daily thread, which should be a lot easier if we continue to see GREEN! I know it makes me feel a little better, even if I see it all just as a game, and one that you can win as long as you think long term and don't worry too much about the blips. Lets post good stuff this week. Spend a few minutes and think about how Apple can improve, and then post about it. Or, possibly even more important, what should be on the Apple specific wall of worry?

WTF?!? “good people on both sides”? Of racism?!? I am ashamed to see that sentiment on the page in AFB, and hope never to see it again! Hey, chill out junior. What I meant was, if everybody had your attitude racism would be a thing of the past in this country. But Unfortunately that’s not the case and many people (not me) are okay with it. Junior? Obviously, you haven’t been paying attention. No, I know that it’s just your smart ass personality. This forum used be informative and congenial. Unfortunately, just about all of the valuable contributors have been driven away by the likes of you. 4aapl, please remove me from the mods list, as I doubt I’ll be around much anymore. It is truly sad to see how a once valuable and congenial resource has been degraded by a few self-aggrandizing boors.
