Thanks for the thread open chinacat. Do most of you subscribe to PED? I enjoyed his articles and miss reading them. Not missing them enough to contribute $14-$20/ month for their access however.
Bring on the rumored Titanium cased iPhone 15 (Pro?)!! The rumors have been so mundane this year. USB-C, geesh, got it. Hundreds of articles on that alone. I'm not craving much other than lighter weight and I'll always take toughness up (I run no case).
Due to the switch to USB-C, how much $$ will Apple make selling all new cables / power bricks? For me, it's quite a lot: nightstand, work desk, cars, travel bags, and this is cords and charging bricks. I will of course buy only Apple products. I value the extra cost to guarantee quality components that won't burn the house down with an errant low quality component. Maybe the risk is low but I'll give Apple a few extra bucks for the quality control.
Guessing I'm in the minority and there will be quite a few 3rd party USB-C charging cables/bricks purchased. I'm curious if Apple will discount either of those products for a few months around the iPhone launch since people will be forced to purchase those things. Including a USB-C to USB-C cable in the box will feel incomplete this time around. Apple can't expect people to already have USB-C charging bricks (unless owning newer Macs or the latest round of iPads) or gasp, almost any other companies electronic anything. Rumors were circulating a month ago about a price increase on the phones. Price increase on top of new cables and charging brick will make for a few hundred dollars more than usual per phone.
Have a good weekend everyone.

I'm going to start this one a little early. And really, in the longer term picture, it doesn't matter much if rates go up another quarter percent or not. It could lengthen the timeframe that rates are above some level, like 4%. But for someone looking 10 or more years out, or possibly just 5 years out, it shouldn't matter much. And maybe Lucky's next dividend repurchase will net him a few more shares. You know, it's been surprising to me that so many investors, on AFB and other sites, have been a little freaked out about AAPL's recent pullback from the $190's. But as an AAPL Long, I *love* to see a pullback in share price when it's dividend time. I talked to one of the Charles Schwab guys today because I'm always a little disappointed that my dividend-purchased shares don't show up until the day after my AAPL dividends and he explained very clearly, what I'm sure the less-dense AFB members already know. Charles Schwab has to make the auto-reinvest purchases of a stock *gradually* during the day...and then they average those purchases so everyone pays the same price. Obviously, the other financial companies do much the same. Anyway, I did a simple calculation to approximate the obvious...the difference in total shares between buying shares at a lower price than $195/share. Since today's range was $173.48 to $177.51, I used $175.00. Buying shares at, or close to that price will result in picking up about 11% more shares that if new AAPL shares were purchased at $195. Is this a great company or what? 😎 Sorry for replying to myself but I just looked at the new dividend-purchased shares that were added to our IRA's because of AAPL's August dividends and the recent drop in the AAPL share price was even a little more advantageous than I expected. I had used $175 as the approximate price price of the new shares and $195 as the *possible* price without the recent pullback...as it happened, our new shares were purchased at $171.51. Consequently, we ended up with 12.4% more shares than I had guessed. Not a huge difference over the 11% guess, but it meant 7 more shares. I'll take it. So now that AAPL dividends have been paid and the new shares purchased, let's get ready for AAPL to revisit the $190's. 😎

Yahoo and the stock app (says it uses Yahoo's feed) both show Friday's low at 171.96. And it looks like that was the low of the week. Congrats on the great price. Though in the very long term it won't matter too much, I wouldn't mind that being the low.

It was a surprise to see that story come back around to Apple for a moment. Strive to be better. That is tough to do at certain times and under certain conditions. But often in those tough times, you can imagine yourself in the other person's situation and at least understand some of the reasoning or mindset. Even if you don't agree with it. I just watched 1883 over the last 2 days, and along with stories of the Oregon trail in general, Elsa's "thoughts" were amazingly deep. Being open to ideas, sometimes you come across things that just mesh. Just as a very long conversation with the GC for a plot 2 doors down. I didn't agree with everything he said, but I could at least understand it and see how he felt that way, especially since our thoughts were very similar on many things. It's been a fun week.

For whatever reason, I couldn't see this. After searching around a bit, I found an archive: archive.ph/2023.08.19-021633/https://www.wsj.com/tech/personal-tech/why-teens-hate-android-phones-30005a9cSame old stuff, saying 87% of American teens say they have an iPhone (from 7100 respondents), and 87% plan to stay on an iPhone. I think it's hard to get accurate data, but it's pretty amazing even if close. FWIW, I was having fun looking around while on the boat at Niagara falls back 6 weeks or so ago. This is a touristy place, and the boat thing was on the order of $50 a head, so it can be skewed. But of the maybe 200 people I could see more closely, I spotted 2 foldable phones, and a few other androids. It's a little hard to see from the face, but the cameras often give it away. I also dropped by the t-mobile store a few days ago, and played with one for a moment. It was pretty slick, with the downsides of price and potential long term reliability. But at $2k, you have to remember that when some article says that an Android phone does something better, there are a multitude of options out there on the Android side. Sure, one or some might have better battery life, but there is enough variety that it might not compete in other ways, like size and weight. And the ones that are cheaper are not as good on other things, like cameras or screen or weight or size or battery life. There are always trade-offs. There are going to be some people that wish Apple did something a little different, like have a bigger, smaller, or even easily swappable battery. But overall, the iPhone lineup is a pretty good mix. Maybe the kids don't think much about that. But it's good to hear that they strongly prefer the iPhone, even if they might not appreciate all that goes into it.

I do. I appreciate reading the analyst notes he receives and the zoom calls with industry pundits and paying for that insight is worth it to me.

Rumors were circulating a month ago about a price increase on the phones. Price increase on top of new cables and charging brick will make for a few hundred dollars more than usual per phone. Are you aware that many Apple devices using the lightning port have shipped with a USB-C to lightning cable? I don't know exactly when it changed. I'm pretty certain that at least the last 2 model years of iPhones have been that way, along with the Watch. We just kept using older cables at first, but the Watch comes with a special small wireless connection cable, so we had to buy a newer USB-C AC adapter when my son bought his SE model of the Watch about a year and a half ago. Other things are making the switchover too. I think half of the plugs in our '22 Sienna are USB-C and half USB. The plug multiplier and USB port thing my wife bought has 3 USB and 1 USB-C. And when I bought a wireless charger from IKEA 1.5 years ago, I purposefully bought the one that used USB-C. Like the changeover from Firewire to the 30 pin dock connector with (I believe) the 3rd generation of iPods, it sucks if you've made some cable purchases. Luckily in most cases Apple doesn't switch cabling standards too often, even if the video card ports (Apple 2 row, SVGA 3 row, ADC, DVI, HDMI, multiple channel for the 30", thunderbolt, and seemingly tons of small laptop connections) seemed like it.

Off the top of my head, I have at least 7 Apple/Technology centric subscriptions (websites, podcasts, substacks) that I pay for. Just dug up the most recent subscription payment emails. While the total cost might seem a bit high to some, it's next to nothing compared to the .75% that a financial advisor would charge for 'managing' my investments and underperforming the market.

USB-C to Lighting: Yes, have a few of those that may come in handy later on. USB-C necessitating 5-6 cables and chargers is no big deal for me. Most of the daily use cables could use a fresh replacement. I was more curious what small bump Apple sees in sales from the necessary switch over. Probably not enough to move the needle but every little bit helps.
It's interesting watching the auto industry also slowly change over. Definitely some adapters needed to mate up to the older (and still some newer) cars.

Probably not enough to move the needle but every little bit helps. It's interesting watching the auto industry also slowly change over. Definitely some adapters needed to mate up to the older (and still some newer) cars. I just meant that if you bought a new device in the last 2 (possibly 3) years, and were using the new cable, then you already had to buy a new AC adapter. It's only because we used old cables for most that we didn't need them for the most part. And I bought a couple wireless chargers, which can be pretty slick but might heat it up a little or be slightly finicky, especially with a case on. But now that we have 5 iPhones, plus an iPad and a few AirPods that sometimes need charging, we have a whole mess of things. We're still trying to get everyone to put them downstairs at night, though admittedly my son's 3 part charger that lets him charge his iPhone, Watch, and AirPods is pretty convenient. Personally, since we just upgraded 4 of the iPhones 6 months ago, I had been really rooting for Apple to have changed from lightning to USB-C back with the 14's. Apple has dragged their feet a little there, but truthfully I don't really see what they see as the advantage of lightning over USB-C. And if there was one that was significant, they could have pushed it as a reason to keep it, whether in the courts or through the public. What is it they say, "The only constant is change". One question will be how quickly various gadgets get updated, like attachable thermal cameras. Looking on Amazon, right now the USB-C ones are for Android, and the Lightning ones are for iOS, which makes sense currently. There are much more mainstream things out there, like various card readers, some of which I'm sure will be ready right around shipment time. But we'll have to see how long it takes things to change over.

Yes, Horace Deidu, Neil Cybart, Gene Munster, the 3 Bens who were briefly together but now separate (Thompson, Evans and Bajarin) and substacks (with Discord for discussions) are: Semianalysis + Fabricated Knowledge. ATP and Daring Fireball podcasts can be very long but are helpful, too.
