And presumed in all this is that this device can control your thermostat, lights, garage door, security system....as well as entertain you.

Yes!
And I already control my thermostat (Nest) and lights (Hue) with my iPad and iPhone. BTW, the functionality of Hue saw a manifold increase with the recent software update (geofencing, etc.).

I get the appeal of Nest. How's Hue indispensable/super-worth-it for you, Mercel? I have a hard time comprehending a $200 starter kit of 3 light bulbs.

Remote control. Low power. Very long life. Now, HUE will wake you up. Or, tell you when the weather will change (lights blink, etc.). Lights turn on automatically as you approach the front door. The development of this technology is just beginning.

Be sure to click the video link that does a nice job of simulating the potential of a REAL Apple iTV. Good timing for this article too, as I'm reading more and more that an Apple SDK WILL BE on the agenda at WWDC and that people are unplugging from cable providers at a growing rate. I should think content deals are going to be easier to come if the old paradigm continues to crumble. This will be a serious new product category for Apple. www.theverge.com/2013/5/15/4152194/apple-tv-concept-video-work-in-progressWhen I saw the video yesterday I thought of posting just for you Mercel. What everyone forgets is that video watching will be but only one of many features. General Apps for many functions will be critical , but I think gaming will be even more important. Shopping, Searching, communicating with others and even reading books will be a part of it.

Just curious, why the need to keep adjusting the thermostat? I set once and left it unchanged. My energy usage according to PG&E is typical during Winter and below normal during Summer. Reason I don't switch on the aircon since I'm very use to hot weather, being living in a tropical region for a long time.

Local commute to Washington DC . . . Thank you for replying, was messing around with you. Congras for having so many houses. Was surprised that you've so many because I got the impression that only Asians love to stash their wealth in houses, thought Americans love to keep improving their owner-occupied home, drive luxury cars and partying.

I'm different then probably 99.99% of all Americans, as I was shot in the head, plied the River Styx and died, hence the user name coma. . . . but in some ways, I am a typical American that likes to party and drive luxury cars. Home Improvements included buying the houses on either side when they became available. That way I can control my immediate environment and rent only to compatible individuals. Thats why I lovingly referred to it as NirvanaLand. The newest car I have is a 2003 Lincoln Town Car with 79K on the odometer. The last (luxury) car was a 1969 Mercedes diesel, it died at 478K and I gave it away.

It's been my experience that people in the hot climates overdo the A/C, leaving things too cold for me. It's like the hot weather has impacted their internal thermostat. I'm content with just a range of 68 - 73. Nest warms me when temps sink below 68 and cools me when the sun warms me above 73. In the sleep hours, I have it drop to 62-64 during the winter. If I wake off schedule, I can reach for my iPad to tell Nest I need some heat without getting up. And that's probably the biggest weakness of Nest -- once your routine is established, there's little else to adjust. Aesthetically, it's a major improvement over Honeywell stuff.

If everyone could experience that once, I think people would lighten up. 480k miles on the same car? You found someone to accept this "gift?" ;D

Just got out of Star Trek. Lots of empty posts. Great movie. Will try to find our how often the iPhone is used to enter theater. So THAT was why there was a phalanx of 20-30-40-50-60 age men marching to an early screening of Star Trek near my theater the other day. Everyone was in street uniform, except RedShirted Ensign, who dressed up as Worf, Son of Mogh. When I said hi, he grunted. Go figure...

Apple customers over time become extremely devoted to the platform. tech.fortune.cnn.com/2013/05/18/apple-ecosystem-loyalty-microsoft-google/Phill Schiller pointed out that defections from Android to iOS 4x greater. So even when growth seems dead, in the long run a new iPhone owner will eventually buy other devices or services which will contribute to bigger growth for other devices or services. The Halo affect is huge. Once Samsung no loner gets to see months in advance what Apple is up to, we will see major innovation from Apple that will pay even bigger dividends then today. If 20% of movies tickets are bought with an iPhone, can you imagine a future where the businesstransactions are mostly done on iOS because someone bought their first fingerprint enabled iPhone in 2014. These devoted people will propel the platform in ways no other company can.

The tunnel of light is before you get to the River Styx and if everyone had a NDE, it would be a different world. I put a new engine in it at 320k, but I didn't want to keep throwing money at the rust. A neighbor put it his barn for a project car.

Americans need fast cars to catch fast women. Do you have a better way? ;D J/k...just trying to keep you off balance with your perceptions, which I find fascinating.

I was at Star Trek and saw a trailer for the Internship which is about a google internship with Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughan. An entire movie about getting a job at google.

Was not impressed. Does not seem funny enough. Makes google look disfunctional. Side note. Saw Vince with his wife and kid at a local botanical garden two weeks ago. He looked tired and anxious.

Between Hulu+ and Netflix I get all the content I WANT, and I get it WHEN I want it. When you think of all the content (day old TV programming) and movies/archived television you get for $16/month, you realize the absurdity of paying $100 (or more) for the trash that is 200 or 300 cable channels you don't want.

Mercel, I suppose you find part-time trolls fascinating. Here I was wondering if anyone wanted to talk broader markets and instead we get the almost-afterlife. Again, fascinating. (/notSpock) (/haven'tseenthemovieyet)

I've been looking at Nest, but since restoring my home (built in 1907) and judiciously adding insulation (removed air conditioning unit) and rehanging windows (also replaced vinyl storm windows with wood) my total gas and electric averages $136/month. That's down from $232 when I moved in. Electric is less than half that. How much more can I save by installing a Nest?

That is why live sports is the holy grail of real disruption of the TV industry. IMO the critical chip to fall is ESPN in the US and whatever entity broadcasts soccer elsewhere.

I didn't do a cost/benefit analysis as I didn't have to. I bought it because I wanted something EASIER to use with more functionality. Plus, it looks cool; I'm a very visual person.

It's been my experience that people in the hot climates overdo the A/C, leaving things too cold for me. All the windows in my home had been nailed shut, with storm windows installed. Turned out the windows had been nailed shut because the counterweight ropes had mostly frayed and broken. I found after I had the windows rehung that the house naturally ventilated (hot air rising and exiting the upstairs windows), cooling the house a good 10 to 15 degrees. A thermostatically controlled exhaust fan in the attic cooled the house even more, and sped the cooling in the evening. Its been 3 years and I have yet to miss the A/C.
