Good morning everyone. AAPL and the major indices are RED this morning with AAPL trading at 129.12 -0.24 (0.19%) at 6:23. Still looking for a pre-event pop... In the news: THE SKY IS FALLING!!!! Pay is broken!!!! WSJ [$], The Guardian and PED stories. It is not until page 39 that we get to the gist of the problem: the banks. Apparently some banks don't think they need to validate cards setup in Pay. Apple's response “During setup Apple Pay requires banks to verify each and every card and the bank then determines and approves whether a card can be added to Apple Pay. Banks are always reviewing and improving their approval process, which varies by bank.” More on cars... Auto Makers Gear Up to Take on the Challenge From Google and Apple. JD was right, we're in for five years of this... let's hope it keeps pushing the stock up. Have a great day. Let's make money.

New smartphone sales data just released from Kantar: "Apple reaches highest ever sales share in urban China" "Leading into Chinese New Year, Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus drove sales to an unprecedented high in urban China with iOS’ share of the smartphone market reaching 25.4% – a 4.5 percentage point increase over the same period in 2014...In Britain, Samsung’s Galaxy S5 was the second best selling smartphone with a share of 8.0%, just under half that of the iPhone 6 at 17.6%. The iPhone 6 was also the best selling smartphone in France, Germany, Italy and Japan." www.kantarworldpanel.com/global/News/Apple-reaches-highest-ever-sales-share-in-urban-China-while-Android-regains-number-one-spot-in-US

Just looking for a "gut feel" on this. Will the Watch release and pre-order frenzy next week mean another iPhone 6 supply backlog? Beyond the inevitable FUD press such an event would generate, I have been holding off upgrading my 4S. Just don't wanna get pinched, so I'm thinking about breaking a piggly bank this week.

Unless you're waiting for a 6s why wait?

Assume T-GAAP reliability when not talking name-brand rumor sources. Which is to say, set to ignore. MBA Retina is a common prediction/hope as side announcement for this event.

No. Boosts iPhone's appeal but iPhones aren't the cheapest things out there TCO-wise. Watch is the add-on.

Poor Gordon Kelly*, "Contributor" at Forbes. I think he's a little confused about how these Apple FUD columns are supposed to work.
Headline: Samsung Outguns Apple As Galaxy S6 Trounces iPhone 6
Comment from text of column: In fact I’d argue Apple’s latest phones currently remain the fastest and smoothest real world user experience available.
Uh...OK.
*From the column: Gordon Kelly is an experienced freelance technology journalist who has written for Wired, The Next Web, TrustedReviews and the BBC. He can be followed on his Facebook Page

It looks like they farmed out the promotional film production to a North Korean team. And farmed out hardware/software design to SkyMall.

I saw this last night. Not a bad execution to showcase apps but the apps themselves are pretty disappointing, quite honestly. I expect better functionality with apps designed for the Watch.

They look horrible if I'm being honest. I'm as big an aapl schill as anyone. I doubt I am adopting v1. I'm willing to bet this will be very compelling in a few generations tho. If it could be an independent device with phone...not yet tho. Battery tech and chip miniaturization not there yet.

Battery tech is the most frustrating part of creating mobile devices, which we have done for years in our company and elsewhere. There has been hardly any progress in at least 15 years. I think it will be a LONG time before we can expect a watch with a cell radio in it, that also delivers on battery life.

Two edged sword. Either better battery or less power use. Need to focus on the latter when it comes to watches and other small devices.

Two edged sword. Either better battery or less power use. Need to focus on the latter when it comes to watches and other small devices. That ship has sailed and will deliver marginal improvement. You still need to push the same amount of power out the antenna. A watch needs better battery technology.

I think the apps are fine. It's a 1.50-1.65" screen, so it has to be quick, lightweight interaction. And I'm sure there are some impressive ones yet to be revealed.

THE APPLE WATCH IS JONATHAN IVE'S NEWTON. nooooooooooooo! www.fastcodesign.com/3042987/you-guys-realize-the-apple-watch-is-going-to-flop-right"When I look at the Apple Watch, I’m not seeing an empathetic creation for the masses. I’m seeing what the New Yorker’s more than 16,000-word story on Jonathan Ive would only hint at—that Apple may have built out the watch to satisfy the urges of a designer who has become more obsessed with Bentleys and Rolexes than making attractive, functional technology that will actually make life better for the 99%. The Newton, Apple's original, failed tablet, didn't sell because tablet technology wasn't polished, and we didn't have the wireless networking infrastructure to make its experience particularly meaningful. Sound familiar?"

Do you think Apple is going to let a third party trump Monday? I see Fast Company is still click bait. The writer gets clicks and a free pass when he's proven wrong. Win-Draw for him. Nothing to see there.

HBO, AAPL supposedly in talks to partner on HBO NOW - "Sources" I hope so. Xfinity and DirecTV suck so bad they need to be dumped in a big, deep dark hole and forgotten forever.

HBO, AAPL supposedly in talks to partner on HBO NOW - "Sources" I hope so. Xfinity and DirecTV suck so bad they need to be dumped in a big, deep dark hole and forgotten forever. From the interwebs: And HBO is talking with Apple to make the Apple TV a launch partner for the HBO Now service. The site says that HBO Now will be available to purchase for $15 per month. That’s around double what Netflix charges, but is in line of what TV subscribers pay to their cable provider for the premium channel. And as most “Game of Throne” fans can tell you, the fifth season of the hugely popular drama will launch next month as well. Here’s more from the report: While HBO has not confirmed a launch date for HBO Now, internally the target is an April launch, in time for the April 12 debut of “Game of Thrones.” That’s an aggressive timeframe for Major League Baseball Advanced Media, which is building the back-end along with a new front-end separate from HBO Go. HBO is taking care not to launch HBO Now before it can guarantee that the service will work without some of the technical glitches that plagued HBO Go during last fall’s debut of “Game of Thrones.”

HBO, AAPL supposedly in talks to partner on HBO NOW - "Sources" I'm surprised that this news isn't suddenly lifting the stock, as this is what many of us had been hoping that Apple TV could become. It is probably helped by the net neutrality decision by regulators.
