What just happened? I can't find any news. AAPL was up just $0.44 a few minutes ago. I looked again, it's up $2.34.

Normally getting added to the Dow results in weeks of underperformance. FWIW statistically.
And conversely companies they get thrown out of the Dow is generally bullish

Short term yes When it officially goes on however it's not as bullish as you might think. This is our AAPL tho so let's buck that trend.

Not really sure what the DOW addition will mean long term for AAPL. Will all the major markets have an effect of dragging AAPL down?

News broke on WSJ...Apple added to the Dow from March 18, replacing AT&T. ON WSJ @8:04 AM Central Apple Inc. will join the Dow Jones Industrial Average this month, a long-anticipated change that adds the world’s most-valuable company to the 119-year-old blue-chip index. The move is the latest milestone for Apple, which has emerged in recent years as the standard-bearer for a resurgent U.S. technology sector. The Cupertino, Calif., company in January reported latest-quarter net income of $18 billion, the largest quarterly profit on record, fueled by roaring sales of iPhones. Apple will replace telecommunication giant AT&T Inc., according to S&P Dow Jones Indices, the unit of McGraw Hill Financial Inc. that owns the Dow. Shares of Apple rose 1.4% in premarket trading Friday to $128.17. Apple’s addition caps the ascendancy of tech in the Dow that started in 1999 when software giant Microsoft Corp. and semiconductor maker Intel Corp. joined, a nod to the “New Economy” boom then sweeping the U.S. Like Apple, both companies are listed on Nasdaq . Previously, all Dow components had been listed on the New York Stock Exchange, though there weren’t any restrictions against having a Nasdaq stock.

I bought the dip hard yesterday and just sold. I'd rather be lucky than good, with positions to win next week. Options MAY limit a higher move today and bounce Monday.
This week AAPL looked like it was all SELL THE RUMOR. Clearly, people were front-running things. Can next Monday break tradition with BUY THE NEWS?

Seems ironic that it is AT&T getting the boot to let Apple into the Dow. They were fundamental in getting the iPhone off the ground. Now it is the single biggest reason they are out. Bet they never saw that one coming when they cut the deal with Jobs.

Trip Chowdhry, Global Equities Research: Apple joining Dow is extremely bad for Apple. Joining Dow takes the shine off the Apple and makes it a rotten Apple. Companies in Dow have historically symbolized companies which are boring, have zero innovation, complacent and are inching closer to irrelevance by the day, which is definitely not what Apple is all about. Apple should just refuse to join the Dow Index.
--------------
My God! Can "trip" really be this dumb? I guess being included in the Dow means Apple will now abandon its entire successful business model and just become like the "others". The scarlet "D on the forehead

When surrounded by 29 cars that suck, everyone will just assume that the new guy sucks too.

Don't be messin' with my bud Trip. He has the highest Watch estimate on the street!
Seriously, good luck trying to channel a coherent thought from Trip's rat nest of a brain. He's the same "analyst" who said it was all over for Apple last Spring if the Watch wasn't ready in 60 days. I could blame it on a too-tight turban, but that would not be politically correct.

MY WAG at this moment:
AAPL $127.79 +$1.38 39,929,410 Volume has slowed. IMHO: this could be +-.20 cents to the close $127.59-127.99
WHAT SAY YOU?
