Good morning everyone. It's annual meeting day. The meeting starts at 9 AM PDT. So where is AAPL this morning? Trading RED at 125.88 -1.26 (0.99%) as of 6:27. The major indices are deeply RED as well. In the news. Still Watch. Not much new since the event. Oh we've got the usual FUD; fakes already available in China, much bellyaching over the price, but nothing newsworthy. For those who missed it, yesterdays event can be viewed at the Apple website. Have a great day. Let's make money.

Anyone else on the board going to the Apple Shareholders meeting this morning? This will be my fourth meeting in a row and, despite them being labeled boring by several members, I usually enjoy them. Tim is often pretty pumped and invariably there's someone who wants Apple, Inc to do something the company will not do, or to cease doing something they're doing. As a bonus, when something controversial does happen, it's interesting to see how accurately it gets reported by the press_by interesting I mean, of course, not very accurately.

This just popped up after my logoff from the BofA site. Always nice to see Apple Pay being promoted by the participating banks and stores.

I want a full report this year. 1) were there any pastries? 2) where did you sit? 3) keep notes. For instance: 30 years ago, I was at a shareholder's meeting of COMB. I had Irwin Jacobs (IRV the liquidator) on one side and John Malone on the other. BOTH are big guys, financially and physically. I felt overwhelmed.

Are they the kind you buy @sam'S CLUB or COSTCO?...... individually wrapped with a unlimited shelf life? OR are they the big heart stopping, diabetes inducing treats? Were some of shareholders loading their pockets with pastries? (I could tell you stories about free stuff @shareholder's meetings I attended.)

I would only go if they served Macintosh apples, which (really!) are my favorite apples, with the perfect mix of sweet and tangy and complexity.

Last week there was talk about battery life and putting cell capability into the Watch. The Apple battery life page shows just how far we are away from that goal. Three hours talk time, which is likely using Bluetooth, which draws tiny power compared to cell radios. I think I am backing away from owning one until I hear some real life reports on battery life, which for me seems close to unacceptable on this product.

If it was in my backyard I'd attend, but I've been to others (Microsoft, Costco, etc). These meetings are typically bereft of any news.

An 18 hour battery life was a pleasant surprise for me. Talking on the Watch isn't going to replace talking on the iPhone, unless it's a short "WS is crazy" kind of conversation, so the battery life won't take a hit from that Dick Tracy feature.
The market is on autopilot with "sell the news." It won't last IMO.

Given the weight of the 3 type of watch I made a quick computation of the gold in the 42mm watch the volumetric mass of the gold alloy used is about 12 g per cc. the metal volume is about 4 cc and there is about one ounce of pure gold in the 42 mm watch edition.

Are any decent questions asked, let alone answers given? I just picture crank cat ladies and guys with tinfoil hats telling Tim that Apple should make solar-powered toasters.

Phoebe - what are the technical cats saying?? Mace - EW update please sir? So the debate over at EW is $124-$126 and then back up .... or $120-$124 and then back up The former has had that view for MONTHS and things have played out his way perfectly but we'll see. The shorts are saying - Hey AAPL will be down because with markets being down it's simply a source of funds - while the longs insist it's a fligt to quality. Interestingly we are almost at that $124 level just as the meeting is about to start. Would be a great spot for that bounce if we are going to get one

I was very impressed with the Researchkit announcement. I think it is an important contribution to science that Apple didn't have to do. I am not a medical professional, but I do understand statistics and much of the medical research done is chilling to read. The initial study that allowed people to use Lithium for treatment of mental illness had 17 patients. There are HIV vaccines that prevented HIV in primates with a 98% success rate that have been in testing for 10 years because of the difficulty in finding volunteers.
What impresses me most is that Apple did the work to create this API without a profit incentive. In a world where we have an arrogant, spying company like Google with a motto of "Do No Evil" I am happy to own shares in a company that just quietly does good.
Before someone turns this into an ethics vs. profit debate and recycles all the "first responsibility to the shareholders" canards, let me say that I have not seen any proof that ethics and profit are mutually exclusive. It is very possible that this is a non-zero sum game.

It is very possible that this is a non-zero sum game. When I was a young woman....ahem...a younger woman - I, like most youth never really thought much about illness. I was immortal - so were all my friends and family, right? Then life happens and slaps you in the face and along the way you have several epiphanies. You begin to realize the importance of science and studies and sharing and research and most importantly, life and the quality of life. I agree and think that Researchkit may possibly be one of the most important things AAPL will ever have done. We shall see. My son has UC (ulcerative colitis...similar to Crohn's). The current drugs that are used to keep this in check are so toxic...it's frightening. No good can come from it. I'm always looking for experimental trials around the world where there may be some results that seem promising. It is so difficult to get information. I go through the usual organizations but the world of medicine is vast and not everyone knows what is happening across the world. I'm hoping there is a gastroinstestinal subdivision of sorts in that Resarchkit that can shed more light on this disease and bring more homeopathic remedies or potential cures. Fingers crossed.

Gross margins will probably be 40-42% for a while.
NO ONE CARES
ResearchKit is great. Probably not too many millions. And it WILL have a positive brand association. Is Android really gonna use this as much as Apple, highly skeptical. This is NOT a bloody ROI flashpoint anyway. Any more than long running Project RED is.

The power of ResearchKit: @wilbanks: After six hours we have 7406 people enrolled in our Parkinson's study. Largest one ever before was 1700 people. #ResearchKit

As a Canadian, I am getting frustrated at Apple's inability to expand their services outside of the U.S.
No iTunes Radio, no Apple Pay, not able to participate in ResearchKit (this one is understandable) - it's just exasperating. Especially with Apple Pay where the existing NFC infrasturcture is orders of magnitude greater than the U.S.
I am unable to use my iPhone to its full potential, and it seems like it will always be that way.

Is anything coming out of the Investor Meeting? I'm hearing nothing? Philip Elmer-DeWitt (@philiped) was at the meeting and tweeted about it. A selection: "Cook is calm and self controlled as he ticks off the initiatives like Project Red, ConnectEd, renewable energy" "Apple CEO says there's no business model behind ResearchKit. We're not in it for the ROI." "Re acquisitions, Cook says "we are constantly on the lookout for talent and IP and other things" (chuckles)" Cook: we don't really have a relationship with Tesla. I'd love to see them pick up Car Play. "Was that a good way to avoid the question?" 10:10 last question from a man who bought stock when Cook gave up his bonus. "What can we do to help Apple?" Cook: tell us when we screw up
