Netflix is being downgraded today essentially because of HBO. Curious those of you who have an AppleTV and subscribe to Netflix, will you cancel your Netflix subscription and get HBO? This is interesting because I have been contemplating this very move.

Another case of wacky wall street logic. I would never cancel my NFLX subscription just because HBO is now available without a cable subscription. NFLX has way more content. HBO, I can only count on one hand the number of shows I would watch from them.

Netflix and HBO. Goodbye Xfinity and it's terrible UI called X1. The only bummer about cutting the TV cord with Comcast is pricing. Cost for internet and TV = about $65. After canceling TV from them and only keeping internet access a couple years ago the price went down to $65. "It's a package, sir. If you want a la carte internet service only, it's the same price." Such bullshite!

The problem is finding it. The AppleTV interface sucks. If you know what you want to watch you can go to search and type it in. Otherwise their menus has a tendency to list the same selections over and over again. Based on a Reddit comment, I started rating shows I'm not interested in poorly so they get replaced in the menu, which works but does not necessarily offer shows you are interested in. Reed Hastings, if you're reading please just add an alphabetical listing of everything. Of course, sortable by name, genre, director, actor, etc would be even better. As mentioned, the thought of replacing Netflix with HBO had already crossed my mind. Based on the downgrade there are at least two of us.

This is interesting because I have been contemplating this very move. I just cut the cord on Comcast last week. Still need them for internet service but it feels good to say goodbye to cable. Replacement is Apple TV with Netflix. I will be a subscriber of the new HBO service once Game of Thrones comes back on. In the meantime, I'm "borrowing" a family member's DirectTV login & pass to access all the various ATV apps. Disney Junior Live is perfect for the little ones. Fox, FX, ABC, lots of networks you can get live if you have access to a login & pass. Situation is ideal for my family. I provide Netflix login & pass, as well as my iTunes information, family member gets access to my extensive iTunes library & Netflix. They provide cable login information and everybody wins (expect the content providers of course).

We canx Netflix streaming and Netflix DVD plan, but kept Hulu Plus. Logged in to HBO using another family member's credentials to try it out. HBO is good for the few shows on there we discovered. Also like that HBO lists the major release movies they currently have scheduled. So, that saves us 2-3 rentals each month from Apple TV. "Pays for itself" if you stream current HBO movies, in addition to whatever TV shows. We find we don't really miss Netflix. Otherwise, just basic cable for us, and high speed internet, of course.

I AM SO EXCITED!
I have COMCAST internet only 50MPS for $56.99/mo.
The only competition is CENTURYLINK 6 or 12MPS for about $50/mo.
CENTURYLINK has been promising 1GB for about $100/mo. for over a year. This week I met the fiber crew. 15 different crews from Michigan and Tenn. They are working 12 hours/day, 7days/week These crews are running fiber between the poles. In 3 weeks, the home installation crews will arrive.
The fiber will give a homeowner up to 1GB internet, fiber TV and telephone.
Let the competition begin!

I am at a show called Enterprise Connect. Sat in a session on mobility, that included Samsung, Verizon, AT&T, and Microsoft. The so called moderator started a discussion on wearables by saying millions of people will be conned into buying an iWatch. Samsung guys was dismissive by saying they are on their third generation now. Microsoft talked about their product being sold out since October. I don't even remember much about that product. Then this moderator slammed the gold watch and how it would be obsolete and the rest of them piled on. Verizon and Samsung should get a room the way they carried on.
The conference has an app where you can kinda tweet to other attendees. I found this whole thing to be so annoying that I commented on it, and eventually accused the moderator of being a shill for his paid sponsors. JD would have been proud. The whole thing was pathetic.

Q1 '13 Apple breaks out Greater China sales. Q4 '13 launches a gold iPhone. Q4 '14 launches gold iPads. Now we get gold MacBooks & watches. Wonder if there is a correlation? My hunch is that Apple understands their customers better than the US tech media thinks Apple understands their customers.

Boy Genius Reports (BGR) is in no way an Apple fan site. It regularly pounds the fruit afficianados in favor of it's own fruit favorite (Blackberry, for years) and has an Android group too. But on the Apple Watch, they have been pulling no punches when comparing to Android Wear. Check this and the linked articles within.... bgr.com/2015/03/16/apple-watch-release-specs-android-wear/

My hunch is that Apple understands their customers better than the US tech media thinks Apple understands their customers. I always wondered why so many people make the assumption that Apple doesn't do market research and just designs "cool stuff" and throws it out for the the public to consume. Sure that's part of the legend, but in practice, it doesn't really work that way for many things involved in product design (colors, etc).

The FUD was spread wide and thick today on LinkedIn. I actually enjoyed myself replying to all the backhanded swings made in the direction of Apple. When children enter the arena with lions, don't the lions have such fun? My prediction: they will all pooh pooh the Apple Watch, then purchase one on April 24th.
Edit: one example from the comments: "I feel there will be significant negative ergonomic impact from using a watch-style wearable. Elbow and wrist, maybe shoulder as well. It's fine to glance at a watch, that's all it requires. Articulating to actually focus on a wrist-worn device and then operate it will be a whole different physical dynamic that I don't think the human body is made to do."
