And 3.5 years ago we were at a split adjusted $100. What's the return on that? Most of us were also forecasting an easy march to $1T market cap. It's hard to say that AAPL has performed well over the past few years given our projections at the time. Don't you think that citing 20% growth after the stock took a 45% hit in seven months is kind of meaningless? I'm pretty sure most of us have been in AAPL for longer than 3 years. True. And yet, that is exactly the bar that Apple has set for Total Shareholder Return when they modified Tim Cook's RSU award to align it with shareholder interest in 2013. In hindsight, they picked the bottom.

Since it's so easy to break this stock, I was actually expecting a bigger drop today in response to the Ming Chi report that says iPhone 7 will be a dud and sales will decline compared to 2014 and that the iPhone will be the only smartphone to decline this year while the others gain more share.
That's quite a bold prediction. And specific too.
Btw, "they" say Ming has a good track record with Apple predictions. Hope he's plumb wrong on this one.

It's one thing to have industry contacts and have a good track record at predicting specifications and features of yet-to-be-announced Apple products. It is wholeheartedly another thing to wildly conjecture on how the public will perceive those specs & features. I don't follow Ming too closely, but this seems out of character for him. Typically he's just predicting what the hardware will look like, not how popular it will be.

Apple should take the bold step of showing the middle finger to Wall St and say that they're now going to stop reporting numbers -- category breakdowns as well as launch weekend unit sales -- and simply give out total hardware revenues and total software/services/other revenues.
That will cause a mini havoc, something that we're used to, but when the dust settles at least the wild numbers that hundreds of pros and amateurs pull out of their asses every quarter and at every launch will stop.

I wonder if Ming can tell us anything about iPhone 8, iPhone 9 or iPhone 10? Do these guys ever do predictions for future, unreleased Samsung phones or do they limit themselves to only announcing Apple iPhone failures, months before the iPhone is actually released?

For those looking out into the distant future, it might be worth noting that the upcoming January quarter will have 14 weeks. Given the superficial level of review that we see from most analysts, this should result in favorable Y-o-Y comparisons. As we saw in 2012, even when warned, most of the media ignores the details. Of course, that doesn't bode well for 2018.
The challenge here is not how do we correct the stupidity of the masses. The challenge is how do we profit from it

Saw this story, Game is Changing in Silicon Valley, in the Sunday's San Jose Mercury News and took a photo of the part that caught my eye: The iPhone-maker accounted for 28 percent of the Bay Area tech industry's $833 billion in 2015 sales. It's profits were a jaw-dropping 40 percent of the region's $133 billion total. I'm posting the photo I took even though the story itself made it online: Apple scooped up 40% of Silicon Valley's publicly traded profits last yearI liked the way it was laid out online by Business Insider (<=WTF?): ================== Apple accounted for 40% of the total $133 billion in profits from the Bay Area tech industry
Apple accounted for 28% of Silicon Valley $833 billion of sales in 2015.
That's more than the combined sales of 41 enterprise tech companies surveyed by the San Jose Mercury News, and that's also three times as many sales as Google's parent company, Alphabet.
Last year, Apple's revenue was up 18% — in total, the other Silicon Valley companies surveyed only grew by 6.8%.
Apple also had the biggest pile of cash and investments among Silicon Valley firms. But Apple also had the highest levels of debt, with its total debt rising 77%, thanks to its strategy of issuing bonds on a regular basis. In terms of sheer numbers, even other tech giants can't keep up with Apple, which recently posted the most profitable quarter in history.================== Well no wonder the stock has been suffering over the last year. /s

He has high grade industrial espionage/leaks feeding to him. He's just relaying reliable intel, he obviously has a good source. This is NOT the same as guessing about what the future holds. He has not done this with any track record that I am aware of.

Mav - opened your article to read but it was too painful too much to read to get to the salient points. Wish there was a high level summary at the top of each of your articles.
