I'm pretty disappointed if the car project has actually been scrapped in terms of building hardware. Spending these billions to end up making software that nobody is going to pay to license is an absurd conclusion. Who exactly would want to license Apple's software and pay a cost that would be worthwhile to Apple in the razor-thin margin auto industry? Not going to happen.
With the car and TV projects both appearing to be failures, I think Apple needs to start considering some revenue and profit-boosting acquisitions, along with juicing up the dividend. I understand the nature of R&D, but losing billions on ventures that don't pan out is tough to swallow.
Apple is a hardware company that makes supporting software. They've never proven that they can sell software as a standalone solution - it's not their strength.

PED this morning:
"....Analysts' estimates range from 43 million to 48 million. Average: 45 million.
Apple warned analysts in July that it expected revenues for fiscal Q4 2016 to come in between $45.5 and $47.5 billion, well below last year’s $51.5 billion.
And because the iPhone accounts for roughly 60% of Apple’s revenue, iPhone sales must also be down. My rule of thumb is to look for iPhone unit sales of roughly one million for every $1 billion in reported revenue.
But most analysts see a light at the end of the tunnel. Their estimates are still trickling in, but of the 18 we've heard from so far—13 professionals and five independents—unit sales estimates range from a low of 42.99 million to a high of 48.2 million. The average estimate, 45.3 million, represents a 5.7% drop year over year. (For investors monitoring Apple’s two-year iPhone cycle, that's a 18% increase from Q4 2014, just before Apple shipped the iPhone 6.) ..."
What is our average guesstimate or range here? Anyone remember?

They've never proven that they can sell software as a standalone solution - it's not their strength. Apple is criticized for not taking risks, not having a moonshot division, not innovating enough. So here they are going with an idea, pulling the string to see where it leads them, and the world is so quick to call it a failure based on Gurman's report. Nobody knows what will happen with Titan and that's OK for now. Let them take a few expensive fliers - without those we wouldn't have an iPhone. And "losing billions on ventures that don't pan out is tough to swallow," sounds like Google to me, and GOOG never gets berated for their large number of fails....

Noticed IO has dropped. This bodes well for a nice move upward in the next 3 months when the big boys get back in.
What is interesting is that options market has us staying in the mid 120s until June next year.
Not too concerned about Apple Car. Apple will build one and the changes if true point to an acquisition in the next 24 months. Tesla still seems like the most likely candidate.

I agree with much of what of what you say but I see Gurman as an extremely reliable source. I don't think Google's R&D spend is anywhere near Apple's recent levels. Could be wrong though. And yes, I wouldn't be complaining much if AAPL had GOOGL's multiple. That's what makes it disheartening.

Noticed IO has dropped... IV or OI? I think he means institutional ownership. But, hey, it's Sponge.

Why Microsoft's Surface Tablet Is Driving Bill Belichick CrazyI think it is likely that the underlying NFL infrastructure that supports the program may be more at fault than the tablets, but I figured this would present a conundrum for those in the forum who hate both Microsoft and Belichick/The Patriots. ;-)

I know that many here have the same regard for Angela Ahrendts as they do for Bill Belichick, but here are an article and video about the ongoing Apple Store revamp. Just discovered that the Cambridge store is currently closed for renovation.

Good news after a bad or good earnings? Usually is before earning. Any views?

Good news after a bad or good earnings? Usually is before earning. Any views? I would hope this is not driven by earnings but by the actual product development. Every that goes by before new Macs are released, people are buying from competitors.
