Holding my dividends as cash. Lots of volatility ahead.

I'm dripping dividends into the great unknown, deer-in-the-headlights style. I'm uneasily betting that the new president can't do any real damage to Apple brand and business. It's just as likely that he pulls a 180 on his comments on Apple. But then, the market can fret about the next 180.....

Holding my dividends as cash. Lots of volatility ahead. I always keep my dividends in cash (except for a small-ish IRA here or there where the default behavior is reinvest). Why? Simple. Because *I* prefer to choose when my money gets invested rather than have some random date on the calendar decide for me. I do a similar thing with my 401k, all contributions go into cash, then I periodically decide where to allocate them (and I try to schedule buys after each large decline). I'm not sure if it improves (or worsens) my overall returns, but it makes me feel more in control, and that's worth something too.

Unless there's a really good DRIP offer like a 3-5% discount on reinvestment it doesn't make much sense to reinvest automatically, other than for the simplicity.

I am shifting my portfolio a little, trying to plan for and take advantage of the possible changes that are coming. One area that I am struggling with is an assessment of inflation risk. I would appreciate hearing anyones opinion of we might see over the next eight to ten years.

Nice to see AAPL holding up and the rest of FANG taking a dirt nap for a change.

Looks like iPhone 7 production is coming into balance with sales but the iPhone 7+ is still constrained.
With Apple now selling used iPhones and refurbished could be a good FQ 1 2017. Not to mention the MacBook Pro possibly exceeding Apple's projections.
Throw in the threat of repatriation of overseas profits I am sure Wall Street is conflicted.

What exactly is your point, Mr. BTFD in the $120s? A good, extremely volatile week means that there will be no volatility in the future? Moron. Tech, including AAPL, had a bad week. Some other sectors had a great week. Looks like volatility to me.

OK, I'll allow that, as your liberal tears run down your cheeks, perhaps got into your keyboard and somehow typed insult that by mistake. All the libs in the mainstream media were talking about markets tanking if Trump won. They did not. Of course the future is uncertain, it always is. If the DOW had tanked this week, you'd be here crowing and blaming Trump and you know it. But this "moron" predicted the next president well over a year ago, and you genius liberal elites nominated a reviled, corrupt, entitled, joyless, screechy, incompetent retread, and now the GOP has POTUS, both houses of Congress (with 23 Democrat Senate seats up for reelection in 2 years), 5-4 SCOTUS to start with, 2/3 of state legislatures that draw/gerrymander congressional districts, and 33/50 governorships. Oh so smart you libs, please keep insulting half the country! Console yourselves that you are our betters, as you shiver out in the cold in the winter of your irrelevancy!

My comment was nothing about markets tanking, but about volatility. Do you understand the meaning of the word? Checked the VIX lately? Besides, Apple has tanked along with tech because of Trump and since that's where my investments are that's what I care about most, not the Dow. But I haven't been crowing. At the end of the day I'm not that concerned about Trump because I'm not American, don't live there and have little desire to visit. It just highlights how much better so many other nations are in so many ways. For the sake of the world I hope Trump does a decent job, but if he fucks things up like we all know he can then you can bet your ass I'll be crowing in a few years. And yes, libs generally are more intelligent. It's simple fact. Unfortunately a dumb vote has as much power as a smart one. Agree that Hillary was the wrong candidate.

More educated does not equal more intelligent. Please don't take this the wrong way, but the Democratic Party relies heavily on the Afican and Hispanic vote which is less educated. Notice that for all people less educated does not equal less intelligent. The self proclaimed intelligent elite in both parties need to stop treating their electorates as children to be lead down what they know to be the one true path. The Republican elite and the Democratics both found Donald Trump repugnant, but whether you like Trump or not he tapped into the visceral feelings of people that the Potical machines of both parties felt them, the electorate, to be incompetent and incapable of a single intelligent thought. So, we were given the choice between two very less than desirable choices. I forgot to add: We Will Survive

I forgot to add: We Will SurviveIntelligent people are more likely to pursue further education, all other things being equal. You do have a point about the lesser educated minority voter base, but the Democratic base as a whole is certainly a more intelligent (and educated) one.
