Benedict Evans on the Imagination Technologies story:
"Apple notified Imagination Tech that in '15-24 months' it will launch new products that use its own GPU technology instead of licensing it from Imagination. Apple (apparently) looked at buying Imagination last year and makes up half of its business - the stock was down 70%. Several things to unpick here. First, Apple already designs its own (industry leading) SoCs and sees controlling the chip technology as a core competitive advantage. And GPUs are becoming more and more central: Apple is pushing into 'computational photography' with the iPhone 7+ camera, GPUs are central to running machine learning locally (since it turns out this uses the same kinds of maths), and, further out, Apple is (probably) working on augmented reality glasses, which will need to do all sorts of computer vision and image processing to work well - they'll need to read the world and place objects within it. So, GPUs matter a lot and controlling the hardware yourself is a key advantage. Not clear why Apple didn't just buy it (and it still might). There's a broader question, though - without Apple as anchor customer, what happens to the state of mobile GPUs from Imagination for everyone else - for Android? Benchmarks of the latest high-end Android, the Samsung Galaxy S8, show it's still a year or two behind Apple - this won't help"

Gruber: "They’re also working on Apple-branded pro displays to go with them." I believe it was John Siracusa who made the point that it was difficult to envisage Apple employees sitting in front of ugly third party monitors in the new Apple Campus.

Finally!! Some Mac Pro and Display Love!! As someone who bought a 6 Core Trash Can recently purely for the purpose of still running Yosemite and Aperture Also I find the nu LG Displays hideous and am still using an 24" Cinema Display. Which I love.

Which I love. I waited for a long time too for Apple to come out with new displays but all in vain. But what I settled on two years ago - a 34-inch curved ultrawide LG - is quite good. It looks sleek, its quality is on par with the MacBook Pro's retina display, and the 34" cinematic widescreen makes it super productive.

WRT the Mac Pro, I'm just going to have to say it has been handled atrociously. The whole reason I bought AAPL in the first place was customer loyalty to the Mac, and Apple seems to have been doing everything it can to ruin that goodwill by not upgrading the Pro since 2013. Apple's uncharacteristic tease on the upcoming Pro revamp is an admission of that. I hate the "that wouldn't have happened under Jobs" refrain, but it isn't hard to imagine Steve having avoided this debacle through sheer force of will.
I'd sure love to snoop around Apple's fab lab though.

I was chatting with a friend who's a Mac user (not an AAPL stockholder), and I mentioned how Apple had kind of F'd up on the Mac lately. He suggested that the Mac user base is small, so no biggie.
I said profit share is what matters, not market share, and told him that the Mac is a $25B business that would be ranked around 110 on the Fortune 500, right around where McDonalds is. Last quarter, Macs yielded $7B in revs - what eBay does in an entire year.
🍏 has gotten so huge, $25B is peanuts? 🥜
