Things seem to be a bit quiet around here today, so maybe this is a good time to initiate a discussion of the future of the iPad.
Fabulous Spouse and I are both ready for new iPads; she has a 2013 Retina Mini and I have a 2015 Air 2. We both like the size of the models we have.
There are articles about which of the 8/8S/X technologies will be transferred to the iPad. Most seem to think that Face ID will be iPad Pro only at first. I guess that does match up with the current status of Face ID as an extra cost premium option only, but I would think at some point it will become the standard on all iPhones, with the possible exception of the SE. As far as OLED screens go, I would think that cost would be a significant factor. The "Plus" sized phone may very well get one in the next generation, but I have a hard time seeing it in any iPad, even the Mini, for a while.
I have also seen some discussion of the Mini being discontinued, which I think would be a mistake. My impression, somewhat buttressed by the latest iPad commercial, is that Apple is pushing larger iPad sizes as a replacement/alternative for notebook computers. But I do think that there are those, especially women, who find the smaller, able to slip into a pocketbook, size quite convenient.
I welcome all rumors and opinions on this topic.

I expect the next generation of iPad Pro (maybe even the iPad) to go with narrower bezels. Whether that means smaller physical size or larger screen area, I don't know. It might make sense to decrease the physical size of the iPad and enlarge the screen area on the Pro. A smaller iPad and a larger iPhone Plus (or iPhone Pro) might squeeze out the iPad mini.
Personally, I don't expect support for Pencil on the iPad; probably a mini-Pencil for an iPhone X next year or two is more likely.
It wouldn't surprise me if it takes two years for Face ID to show up on the iPad (Pro).

Most other techs have rebounded well off their recent drops except our favorite one. It's strange because when the tax bill becomes law, as in Since84's link above, Apple shareholders would absolutely be among the greatest beneficiaries. But it seems like AAPL sellers believe otherwise.

I have been using an iPadPro for about a year. I have found it to be a frustrating experience. This is primarily due to the learning curve since the conventions for using a split screen on a touch device are still being sorted out. Eventually, I assume that it will be as natural as using a mouse is today, but I still spend a lot of time trying to just get what I need on screen. In addition, I find scrolling through a 300 page document to be unworkable. I use the iPad to access information during meetings and by the time I have scrolled to what I need, the conversation has moved on.
I admire Apple's efforts and I know they will eventually get there, but I cannot call it an effective tool in its present state.
Of course, there are thousands of different ways to use it and I am only talking about one use case. It may be the greatest thing since sliced bread in other cases.
I think the most important feature of any portable device is weight, so I agree that they should keep the iPad mini around.

I'm seeing that the tax cuts for corporations don't kick in till 2019, but what I'm not seeing is when can repatriation happen?
