I had mixed feelings after reading Apple is missing out on billions of dollars by skirting the hottest trend in software. I have usually preferred to own software rather than rent it, for the usual reasons: solid, mature products with high usefulness can have extended life cycles, while I have more than once run into reliability problems with various "service providers." But there can be no doubt that a steady income from subscription-based services can provide a more reliable base as insurance for any product-based business. But the repercussions of failures in a service-based business can be extremely damaging to the brand, especially in competitive markets. The investment community seems to have a more positive regard recurring revenue-based models. But it is also true that failures in delivery can be devastating to a firm's reputation, especially when trust is/has been an important component of the company brand. Thoughts?
