Not sure what you mean about Starbucks and Panera since84. Do your local stores have readers in them that don't work? I've had pretty good success with using Apple Pay at Panera, and although I do use the Starbucks app to pay (solely for the rewards), I load a gift card using Apple Pay first so that Starbucks never gets my CC info, but I can still participate in the rewards program. Similarly, I find myself at Target often, so since they only accept Apple Pay within their app, I use Apple Pay to purchase a TGT gift card, then just pay in-store with the gift card. It's an extra step, yes, but I'd rather Target not have my CC info. With respect to that Yahoo Finance article, the comments section (as is typical for that site) was painful to read. Some of the comments had replies to rebut some of the nonsense, but the level of ignorance on there is staggering.

Yes Carbonate. I frequently encounter registers where the reader doesn't work at both Panera and Starbucks. To the point that I've started asking if they'd use the register if the cash drawer didn't open...

To the point that I've started asking if they'd use the register if the cash drawer didn't open... Got it. I'm the pain-in-the-neck customer, that when I'm not in a hurry, will ask to be rung up at a different payment terminal, simply so I can use Apple Pay. But I agree, there are places (or at least the employees at checkout) that don't seem to care if their terminal is working. I once wrote to a franchisee of McDonald's to let them know one of their POS terminals wasn't working with Apple Pay. I got a letter back thanking me for writing and a voucher for a free sandwich. Months later, the terminal still wasn't fixed. Needless to say, I don't go to that store anymore.

Wow Carbonate24, I see you mean about the comments scary stuff, you would think people would be aware of the potential for breeches, privacy issues and the advantage of not handing over CC info but oh no, just boils down to the tried and true not gunna break with convention as you hand over your life as you make payment Vs Apple Pay where you hand over one encrypted number good for that one transaction. Unreal.

I do sometimes fear for the future of our civilization.

Speaking of Idiocracy... I guess even the proofreaders have a firmly engrained anti-Apple bias. Wait, there are proofreaders, right?!?
