Another example of "Saved by Apple": Thanks for posting this cdnphoto! So now, including the experience I posted on 01/16/19 (included below), at least 3 members of AFB (Ted, cdnphoto and myself) have had heart-related experiences where an Apple Watch did, or could have, provided some measure of warning protection. In my opinion, that's pretty remarkable for such a small sample size.
I would also ask the other members if I'm the only one who notices Apple Watches everywhere I go. I think I started watching for them shortly after the watch was first released and I noticed so many articles stating the Apple Watch was a flop. Some flop. I truly see them *everywhere* and it's frequently more than one of the watches within a 30-foot radius of us in restaurants, airport lounges, etc.
Anyone else notice the abundance of Apple Watches in the wild?============================ Wednesday, January 16, 2019: $154.94 +1.87 (+1.22%) Jan 16, 2019 at 2:47pm cdnphoto, pauls, and 6 more like this Post by Luckychoices on Jan 16, 2019 at 2:47pm Ted Avatar Jan 16, 2019 at 10:38am Ted said: CNBC has Apple is in talks with private Medicare plans about bringing its watch to at-risk seniors.
A couple weeks ago my 84-year-old father was walking home from a movie with my mom when he became light-headed and dropped onto the sidewalk. After a minute he got up and they continued home very slowly. Long story short, dad is now fine, but needed a procedure for a pacemaker. He had heart rhythm issues: A-Fib.
While he was explaining to me what had happened, I slipped in that he should get an Apple Watch "cause they're made for this exact thing." He said he'd look into it. A day later he called and mentioned that maybe I should be his doctor - the cardiologist told him that he needs to get an Apple Watch.
Watch will continue to improve quickly and will soon be indispensable for a large and growing demographic. ----------------------------------------------------------- Ted, I hope your dad is doing well and that he follows your suggestion, and his cardiologist's, regarding the Apple Watch.
I very much agree with the concluding statement of your comment and especially believe so after my personal experience with the latest model.
My wife and I have had Apple Watches from their introduction almost four years ago so, last October, we finally upgraded to the Apple Watch 4. In mid-afternoon on Christmas Day, over three weeks ago now, I was feeling very fatigued so I sat down and ran the 30-second ECG on my watch. The response from my Apple Watch? I was in atrial fibrillation.
An hour later I was in the ER of my local hospital getting checked out and several days after that I met with my cardiologist who prescribed the proper medication to thin my blood to help prevent a possible stroke. I'm posting this today after wearing a ZIO patch monitor, 24/7, for 13 of the 14 days targeted, and tomorrow I'll put it into the box in which it came and mail it in for analysis. When the analysis is completed, I’ll meet with my cardiologist who may potentially prescribe further treatment based on the results.
Without the 30-second ECG from my Apple Watch, I would not have *known* my heart was in AFIB and I would have *never* chosen to go to the ER based on my symptoms, particularly on Christmas Day.
The medical benefits of the Apple Watch are clearly *not* just a gimmick, regardless of critical comments from the Apple naysayers that wish it were.
Note: In spite of the great comment from Ted's father's cardiologist, one of the medical people in the ER pointed to my Apple Watch and said something like, "You know, those aren't always accurate". My response was something to the effect that it was plenty accurate enough to convince me to go to an ER to have professionally trained people examine me. SMH
Note #2: I forgot to mention that after the ER visit, when I went in for the followup appointment with my cardiologist, I noticed that both the man and the woman who were checking in patients were wearing Apple Watches. Cool, I thought. Then, when my cardiologist's assistant came and got me from the waiting area, I noticed she was *also* wearing an Apple Watch. Three for three. They're everywhere!
Sadly, when my cardiologist showed up he was *not* wearing an Apple Watch but 3 out of 4 was not too shabby, IMO.

His heart was beating at an abnormally high rate after being hit by a soccer ball at a kids game.

I would also ask the other members if I'm the only one who notices Apple Watches everywhere I go. I think it depends on where you are. I notice a lot of them around town here, often on people I wouldn't normally expect, but often on people that you would expect. For reference, we've had a huge influx of Tesla's too, and our average house is several times more than the national average. OTOH, we were just in Portland for about a week, for a brother-in-law's graduation from Pharmacy school. I wasn't looking specifically (though that would have been fun to do, especially at the ceremony), but I can't remember seeing any. But then I did specifically see a couple Samsung watches and called it out, since it was on a couple Aunt-in-laws (is that a thing?). One is a high level hospital manager, and then she gave her old one to her sister when she bought a fancier one. I just hadn't really seen any, though it sounds like one benefit is similarly to an Apple Watch it sometimes prods you to get a few more steps in. But I did get a kick out of the graduation, with a huge swath of people holding up what looked like iPhones, and one iPad. I think the Bay Area, and similarly my area of Tahoe that has a huge population of visitors from the Bay, is a skewed data set if looking for American averages. But, it's still helpful sometimes, and can show the "affordable luxury" aspect at times. (Beautiful day here today, spent with a couple friends clearing 29 downed trees off of 30 miles of trail. Most of the snow had melted, though there was still some up over maybe 8500'. I hadn't played on an e-bike before, but it was pretty great for this, with 30-40 lbs packs for the chainsaw and supplies)

I am in Salt Lake City this weekend, and I've seen a LOT of Apple Watches downtown. I've never been all that interested in them, but I've come to appreciate how the watch bands customize the look, and they all look very fashionable on people. One of Apple's great moves in making the watches popular is the personal customization that the bands allow. I also love the beautiful graphics on the watch. I've thought about getting one, but I haven't worn a watch since I walked into the gym showers wearing my Timex while in high school, ruining it.

I've been noticing a lot of Apple Watches around. People who would have never spent that kind of money on a watch before, are now wearing an Apple Watch. I have one. You don't need an AppleWatch, until you get one. Then you can't do without it. I found an old post of mine: Today was a rough day. It all started this morning when I decided to do the update to the AppleWatch. I thought it would complete the update while I was in the shower. Well, the update wasn't done, and I needed to leave. I put on my old Swiss watch for the day. Here's where the first problem happened, I looked at my watch to see what the temperature was. It couldn't tell me. All it could tell me was the time. Later, my phone buzzed. I looked at my watch to see what the notification was. Again, it couldn't tell me. All it could tell me was the time. Again later, I needed to find out if I got messages. I looked at my watch to see if the message came in, and it couldn't tell me. All it could tell me was the time. At lunch time, I went to pay for my lunch with ApplePay. I reached to my watch to double press the button, but there was no button. The watch couldn't help me pay for lunch. All it could tell me was the time. I wanted to see how AAPL was doing. I looked at my watch to see how AAPL was doing, and it couldn't tell me. All it could tell me was the time. All is better now. I have my AppleWatch on.

Thanks so much for reposting that because I somehow missed seeing it the first time. It's a *great* summary of the answer to the question, "Why should I buy and wear an Apple Watch?". I enjoy watching Steven Colbert and noticed several months ago that he was wearing an Apple Watch. However, he clearly wasn't initially taken with the Apple Watch concept; this is a brief clip of Steven Colbert mocking the Apple Watch in 2014 Steven Colbert Mocks Apple Watch, iPhone 6Skip forward to about the 6:40 moment to fully appreciate the change in Steven Colbert's attitude towards the Apple Watch. Mindy Kaling Gets Cut Off by Stephen's Apple WatchI think many people have had that same change of heart when they realized that the Apple Watch is not *just* a watch, much as the iPhone is not just a phone.

I have a Fitbit and I too didn't think I wanted one. Now can't live without it. It tracks my steps (accurately, not like iPhone), It also does a reasonable job on reporting my sleep, and does not need a recharge for days.

I have the latest Apple Watch. I hadn't worn a watch since I retired 11 years ago. I always wear my Apple Watch now. I probably don't use too many features but what I use is indispensable for me. Top feature is to be able to receive phone calls. Sometimes my phone is not near me and with Watch I never miss a call. I have AirPods so its really nice to leave my phone at home and to listen to music with my Watch. I like being alerted to a new message as I don't always have my phone with me. I think my favorite use is using Apple Pay with it I just checked my heart, important feature I don't use the exercise app at all. I probably should but I don't When Apple upgrades the watch and there are new health monitoring features, I will buy it and give this watch to my son

I have a Fitbit and I too didn't think I wanted one. Now can't live without it. It tracks my steps (accurately, not like iPhone), It also does a reasonable job on reporting my sleep, and does not need a recharge for days. So, Fitbit: 1. Tracks your steps accurately 2. Reports on your sleep 3. Goes days without recharging. If this is sufficient for you, then you don't need an Apple Watch. My younger son and daughter-in-law both use a Fitbit and have shown little interest in an Apple Watch. But, as cdnphoto stated, his Apple Watch: 1. Shows the outside temperature 2. Shows his notifications 3. Shows his messages 4. Allows him to use ApplePay 5. Shows him stock information I came across an interesting article from a few days ago: 50+ Exciting Things You Can Do With the Apple WatchThis is a list of Apple Watch features shown in the article: Answer Calls Use the Apple Watch as a Walkie Talkie Listen to Podcasts on the Apple Watch Use the Apple Watch to Challenge Friends Use the Apple Watch as a Flashlight Use the Apple Watch in Water Track Your Runs Stay Quiet in a Movie Theater Change Your Watch Face See Info Quickly Monitor Your Heart Rate Track Your Fitness View and Reply to Text and iMessage Send Apple Watch Emoji Get iPhone Notifications On Your Wrist Share Your Heartbeat Pay with Apple Pay Use Apple Watch Apps Get Directions On Your Apple Watch Send Drawings from the Apple Watch Use Siri on the Apple Watch Look at Photos on Your Apple Watch Connect to Your Car Send Facebook Messages Listen to Music on Your Apple Watch Stream Apple Music on You Apple Watch 3 Share Your Location Check Your Email Control Your Apple TV & Music Use it as a Camera Viewfinder Find a lost iPhone Store Tickets on Your Apple Watch Use it as a Nightstand Clock Set Your Apple Watch Up to 10 Minutes Fast Send an SOS Keep on Track to Close Your Activity Rings Keep You On Task as a Virtual Assistant Send Money to Friends with Apple Pay Cash Use it as a Stopwatch Show Store Loyalty Cards Control Your Smart Home Get Important Weather Alerts Use as a Translator Check Your Instagram Feed Track Your Sleep Always Have Your Passwords Track Skiing and Snowboarding with the Apple Watch Continuously Track Your Heart Rate Without Workouts Control Your HomePod Music Order a Pizza Open Your Garage Door Show Your Car Insurance Check the News New watchOS 5 FeaturesNow, do I use all of these features? Heck no. But I use enough of them (the bolded ones) that I never have any problem suggesting an Apple Watch may be a good purchase. BTW, when I ended up going to the ER on Christmas Day in 2018 because my Apple Watch told me I was in in atrial fibrillation, the screen that showed up was the one labeled 12/25/18, 2:29 PM: As you can see, I had previously run the test for AFIB on 12/18/18 and it showed I was in Sinus Rhythm. After the second result a few minutes later, labeled 12/25/18, 2:52 PM and a short telephone conversation with my younger brother who's had bouts of AFIB for years, I decided to head for the ER and put myself in the hands of the health professionals. After spending several hours in the ER, I finally had Sinus Rhythm show up on my Apple Watch at 9:18 PM as shown in the attachment below. Of course, seeing that on my Apple Watch was just for me since I had already received the OK to go home.

I had a second hand Watch 2, stainless steel with a decent knock off Milanese loop. I rarely wore it, but traded it in on the Watch 4. Here's why:
- Watch 2 in stainless was too heavy and a bit too thick. Watch 4 is "space gray" aluminum which is significantly lighter and a few mm less thick. That makes a huge difference to me.
- Watch 4 has features that are important to me as an older adult living alone, such as fall detection, heart rate monitoring, automatic calling to 911 and a nearby relative should I fall or die wearing the watch (trust me, you don't want the police to break in to your house doing a welfare check because the neighbors noticed a bad smell).
- extra screen real estate
- all the other features especially fitness tracking, turn indicators when using map directions, taking and placing calls and messages when phone isn't handy, Apple Pay, and quick access to weather.
The second point is the most important to me.
