RED JOAN, 2019, staring Judi Dench on Netflix. Was she correct in her assumptions or has history proven her wrong? Based on a true story.

Don’t Look Up (2021) staring Leonardo DiCaprio. An hilarious movie that describes today’s society and its values. It’s said that good humor must be based on some truth.

Thanks Dave I will try and catch those if I can find the time. I think my Wife and I have had Chinacron for the past 6 weeks, though I can't say for sure. We got tested 3 times during the first three weeks and had 2 positive and 1 negative, 1st and 3rd positive and the 2nd negative, the 2nd one was 2 weeks after the first and the 3rd one a week later. They would/could not tell me how many cycles they ran on the PCR tests. Felt like a pretty bad sinus infection, but we both did lose our sense of smell and taste for a few days.. I know there are many false positives out there and I assume that is accurate in reference to our tests---at least the last one, but it is hard to tell. I do agree with those who label Chinacron as the long covid because we are still having after-effects such as mysterious night sweats, sudden coughing fits, as well as sudden sinus dumps. I am glad we have had it (if we did) in some form because I believe that herd immunity will be what stops it and this variant is really easy to catch as it lives in the sinus cavities.. Some doctors are calling it quick relief because it is so much milder and it will hasten herd immunity. I think we will see see a speedup in the case drop over the next month (I hope), the death count will probably stay at current level for a little while (but it should start dropping as well). Mortality rate of the disease is dropping fairly quickly thanks to this variant. Just my thinking after dealing with it (I think).
Anyway thanks for the movie tips I will try and let you know what I think of the them.

Top Gun : Maverick. Staring Tom Cruise and Jennifer Connelly. I went to the local iMax to see this today. After setting down I realize that the last time I was in a theater was before the iPhone, so just going was an experience of its own. I highly recommend seeing this movie which was exceptionally well made and was a true tribute to the original and our country. Two thumbs up.

“The Old Man” tv series. Staring Jeff Bridges, John Lithgow. A former CIA officer who's living off the grid finds himself on the run from people who want to kill him.
I relate to the title.
I’m watching it on Hulu.

Binged on a few movies on Amazon Prime, before we cut off our membership for a bit.
The Wolf of Wall Street Great to see how wall street can attack, similar to the plunger shops of old, and a few different movies, but then moving on up to mainstream. There were some real truths in it, basically of how easy it is to use greed to make a sale, moving on up if need be. Lots of drugs, cussing, sex, and nudity, though a bit less in the normal version than the uncut version I think I originally watched. Worth watching, if you haven't.
Anthropoid Assassination attempt in WWII. A bit too predictable so I moved on to the next one (very similar plot), but the "don't stand out when you don't want to stand out" idea was right on.
Valkyrie Same idea, of an assassination attempt in WWII, but with Tom Cruz, and more plotting. A good film, and some will really like where the failure came in. I don't necessarily agree with that worry in modern times, and yet it can be. I'll leave it at that. Based on real events. While I had heard of this, I didn't realize there had been so many assassination attempts.
All the old knives This one was pretty good. I don't think it gives too much away by saying it reminds you that blackmail sucks.
I also recently watched the TV show Terminal List. Aside from having nearly the same initial squad makeup in the first episode as Seal Team (seriously, they were near doubles), and not being quite as polished, this was pretty good.

I thought I had mentioned Pawn Sacrifice at some point. It was another on Prime, at least back in the summer. A chess movie about Bobby Fisher, I won't give anything away by saying that I liked the surprising general strategy.
We're watching The Queen's Gambit series now.
And if you want a general feel good movie, The Secret on prime was a good one.

The Age of Adaline. Starring:Blake Lively, Michiel Huisman, Kathy Baker, Harrison Ford, Ellen Burstyn. I think that is best if you know nothing about the story line and let the movie simply unfold.

Dave the documentary on Prime about the Spirit and Opportunity rovers sent to Mars is showing. Very well done and explains why these Rovers became almost childlike to these scientists. It is heartwarming and is called "Goodnight Oppy". A classic look at why Spirit begets Opportunity. As I watched I wondered why I felt as if everything I was doing during this mission seems so trivial now. Mankind was leaving its mark on a far distant planet while giving away a Country whose creation, dedicated to the freedom of humankind, was also a classic "spirit to opportunity to bondage" story here on Earth. Just like Spirit and Opportunity the work of the Founders lasted longer than the Tytler cycle (200 years) prediction, but if nothing is done to correct the corruption that exists in US political elections, as well as unlimited immigration, we won't make 300 years. www.amazon.com/Good-Night-Oppy-Ryan-White/dp/B0B8JMCCJR

I did not mention a political party, I simply stated two major problems that are not being addressed that pose a significant threat to this Country. I did not blame anyone or any party for what is occurring and is in the news. However if you would like I can send you a PM on it. Apparently you "might" just be concerned because you are just a little too political yourself. I only expressed that the documentary made me realize that I missed much of it as it happened because at that time I was involved too much in political things beyond my control. This is not the daily thread it is the movie thread in the Dungeon, and I mentioned no political party, nothing left or right, no blame. Perhaps it upset you because you are too political. There has been more political innuendo, and direct comments by both sides in the daily posts than anything my post here engendered. Why don't you just tell the mods to get rid of the Dungeon because you can't stand to have someone state anything that hurts your feelings, neither directly or indirectly, because after all I did force you to come down here to read the post, and get your feelings hurt, all in a post not even directed to you. So does this mean we can't post movies, TV shows, or documentaries down here that have any political overtures, or does it mean if we post them we just can't comment on them? The rules seem to change every time you complain. We have come a long way since LovemyiPad. “The state can't give you free speech, and the state can't take it away. You're born with it, like your eyes, like your ears. Freedom is something you assume, then you wait for someone to try to take it away. The degree to which you resist is the degree to which you are free...” ― Utah Phillips

All Quiet on the Western Front is a novel by Erich Maria Remarque, a German veteran of World War I. The book describes the German soldiers' extreme physical and mental trauma during the war, and the detachment from civilian life felt by many upon returning home from the front. The 2022 remake of this movie is quite good and is available on Netflix. World War 1 changed the world, to say the least and set the stage for World War 2, which is considered by many to be just a continuation of the first war. Where old politicians and old generals, who were trying to refight a new war with methods from previous wars. Where the calvary charge meets the machine gun. For a couple of books to read, for those interested in this time in history, are “Somme” by Lyn Macdonald which describes a battle where more men died in this one battle than in all the years of the Vietnam war, if I remember correctly. And “The Guns of August “ by Barbara W. Tuchman which covers the years of the war. None of these are feel good stories, but it gives some insight into the history of how we arrived to the world of today and hopefully never to be repeated.

Have not seen or heard about the remake. I will watch it soon. We all look like fools when we ignore history. WWI brought us to the edge of the abyss and WWII took us over and into the chasm, giving mankind the power to destroy the Earth. We will reap what we sow I guess, but we don't have to like it. Thanks for mentioning this. Somme was indeed bloody.
“In the Somme valley, the back of language broke. It could no longer carry its former meanings. World War I changed the life of words and images in art, radically and forever. It brought our culture into the age of mass-produced, industrialized death. This, at first, was indescribable.” ― Robert Hughes, The Shock of the New

The Wonder, 2022 Netflix. A very interesting and thought provoking movie. Great cast, beautiful realistic sets and a story that pulls you deeply into the characters and their lives. Also, a interesting introduction at the beginning of the film. For some background on the Great Famine (Ireland) and some of the causes.

We bought a month of Paramount+ to watch the World Cup, and I decided to watch Yellowstone.
It's a fun TV show, as long as the blood and violence (and occasionally some skin) doesn't jar you too much. Kevin Costner does a great job, both in it and directing it. Some parts are slightly obvious, though I think his thoughts coming out in the 4th series make for the point of the whole show. Cowboy-ing looks fun (the attraction they list), and the views in Montana are great. And some of the thoughts and issues match things where I live, just as they probably do in many places (priced out of the area, etc).

Ok, binge time.
The middle schooler's got pulled into Outer Banks. Pretty fun. We watched season 1 and 2 over a week or two, and then just binged on season 3 in 2 nights. 90210 but fewer cars, on a beach, with some violence, and a longer plot. We're not talking West Wing here, but kinda fun.
6 Underground was ok. Not perfect, but ok for an action flick, as long as you are ok with Ryan Reynold's style.
Army of Thieves. Pretty decent. Some slow points. Not perfect if you have an inkling of how locks and safes work (MIT guide to lock picking), a little akin to Swordfish if you cared about how computer security works, but still fun.
True Spirit. This was pretty good, about the 16 year old from AU sailing around the world. I'm not a real sailor, so I only took issue with one part. A fun flick.
It think there were another one or two we watched recently, trying to knock a few off of the Netflix and Prime lists. Personally I do try to cross reference with IMDB, aiming for at least a 6, and ideally 6.5+. That helps weed out some of the "we think you'd like this" or "top hits" stuff. To each their own.
And on that note, Murder Mystery. I just haven't been a huge fan of Adam Sandler in general, though I think we liked 50 first dates. This one was pretty decent, but would be even better for someone who gels better with his humor.

"All the money in the world" was a good flick about the kidnapping of Paul Getty. But as he pointed out, the real interesting part was how people act about money. The response of "More!" to how much money he would need to feel secure probably is the feeling of many, at times or all the time, even when he was the richest person in the world.
We happened to visit the Getty museum in Malibu at xmas time this year, which is the one he had modeled up. It's an amazing place, though interesting in its attempts to be a duplicate of Pompei. And like the museum in LA with an SR-71 outside and a space shuttle inside, it's free! You just have to pay for parking. The grounds and architecture, even if a copy, amazed me even more than the contents.
"A star is born" was also pretty good, in a tragic sort of way. With how well Lady Gaga's songs fit in and how it was done, I wasn't sure if this was a real story about her life. At the end it says it was based on a novel and screenplay, from before her time.

I’ve also seen “A star is born” and enjoyed it. It didn’t have the ending that I was hoping for but I thought that the movie was very well made and I enjoyed the music. Maybe provides a glimpse into that life as a star.

"The Circle" is a flic about a "social" company. It does a decent job at portraying a tech company, taking a few things from Apple even if Apple isn't its main target. And that target seems to be Facebook.
It's not the best movie, though I'd say it hits above the 5.x that IMDB gives it. But for the privacy issues it brings up, along with being about tech companies even if highly generalized and almost satirical, it seems important enough to at least use as a starting point to see both sides of the issue.
Given that the movie is 7 years old, it's still sitting pretty well. Their drones were pretty huge, but there weren't flip phones, and I could see a lot of that happening. Some of the more middling IMDB voting could be from it being too truthful, though my wife didn't like it that they didn't fully finish the story.
