"The Circle" is a flic about a "social" company. It does a decent job at portraying a tech company, taking a few things from Apple even if Apple isn't its main target. And that target seems to be Facebook. It's not the best movie, though I'd say it hits above the 5.x that IMDB gives it. But for the privacy issues it brings up, along with being about tech companies even if highly generalized and almost satirical, it seems important enough to at least use as a starting point to see both sides of the issue. Given that the movie is 7 years old, it's still sitting pretty well. Their drones were pretty huge, but there weren't flip phones, and I could see a lot of that happening. Some of the more middling IMDB voting could be from it being too truthful, though my wife didn't like it that they didn't fully finish the story. I read the book a few weeks ago. Didn't know they made it into a movie! Saw "Renfield" tonight, not bad.

Some AppleTV+ movies I'd recommend: Come From Away (As a Canadian, I really have to recommend this) Greyhound (Great movie produced for AppleTV+) The Banker (good movie, may not be something everyone would enjoy. I did)

I did) Greyhound really is a great movie and one of Tom Hanks best performances, ranking up there with Saving Private Ryan. I’ve watched it several times, always enjoying it. I’ve been watching the series “The Diplomat” on Netflix finding it very entertaining. Maybe a look behind the curtain of foreign affairs in today’s timeframe.

The Last Ship HBO Max, TV series, 2014 - 2018. From one of the reviews: I’ve just finished watching the first season, and so far no zombies.

Just watched the 6th season of Billions. It was sitting on the shelf at our library.
Overall, I loved it. Like some reviews, I'm a little bugged by the constant fight by the AG, but some of the issues are real life ones being pushed while also giving some perspective of why some push those issues and how they feel.
No zombies in this one either. And unlike some of the past seasons, no sex shown. Sorry. I guess they don't feel they need that shock factor anymore.
I guess I liked some of the chess moves and deeper thinking, and while one of the major moments came to me early on in the season with a hint they gave, I also have guesses to the cliffhanger. I personally think I would prefer the show if Chuck were out and we didn't have the AG storyline fight, but it is what it is.
This is one where they throw so much at you that it's hard to digest, with part of it being NCIS Denozo style movie/tv/music trivia where I only got a third of it. FWIW, director Andrew Sorkin is not related to West Wing director Aaron Sorkin.
I really enjoyed it. This is one of the rare TV shows that I would consider watching again by choice (ie not just that it happened to be on when I was looking to watch something). And the cameos are good too, with some called out in the extras, but a bunch of others like the 5 bankers or directors mixed in there too. With finance as a job or hobby, it makes some of this stuff a little fun.

My follow up on The Last Ship with just a few episodes left: The thing that I find so amazing about this series is the story and how amazingly it was telling the future or could have been our future. Remember that this series ran from June 2014 to November 2018 and was based on a novel by William Brinkley that was published in 1988. The acting is good, especially for a series, and you become connected to most of the lead characters which generates a good amount of stress as they go through impossible situations. But still no zombies, yet.

Living (2022 film)Not a fast paced movie, but one that draws you in as one looks for clues to the main character. The setting is 1952 London. A quote that stuck with me was, “ I haven’t the time to be angry”, which brings up the question, does anyone? Netflix.

I agree, in this world there are far too many things that are wrong and appear to be so unnecessarily, but anger can be destructive to the one that is experiencing it while having no affect on the problem. I like the saying that being angry at another person is like me drinking poison expecting someone else to die. It can only harm me. It can be a motivator but not a driver. But, easier said than done. But anyway, I thought that it was a well made movie that told a good story that may apply to all.

Haven't got to see this yet (don't have Max) but I will still keep an eye out for it. Out in the same year 2017 on Netflix was this film I watched 2 or 3 years back. I don't know if we discussed it then, but I just watched it again today. "Bombshell" the story of Hedi Lamarr as an actress and an inventor. She was an incredible human who, despite her limited education (High School only), came up with the earliest form of frequency hopping which opened up the world of secure communications. She had the patent and presented it to the Navy as a way to control their torpedos after launch by overcoming the radio jamming tactics of the Nazis. The Navy was not quite yet on board with respecting the intelligence of beautiful women and just laughed at her submission. The invention went on to become the backbone for cellphone communications using CDMA (code division multiple access), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and all modern secure communications. In the film they said the current value of the invention amounted to $30 billion dollars. Lamarr, after discovering that the Navy did actually use the patent before it expired applied for royalties, but you must do that within 6 years after it expires I believe, and she received nothing. It is a great story about her life if you haven't seen it. I very first read about Lamarr in the late 90s and it was part of the inspiration for me investing in Qualcomm (as well as my nephew's advise), my first major success in the stock market. Qualcomm had many patents on CDMA technology which was the continuation of Hedi Lamarr's frequency hopping designs back in the mid-40s. QCOM stock jumped $156 in one day 12/29/1999 and I had 400 shares, at the time my largest single day gain on 1 stock. AAPL and then AMZN made bigger gains for me later, but rather than hold as Lucky always advised (on Apple) I took profit. Had I just held any one of the 3 stocks I would have more in the market than I do now. I am now at 2400 shares of Amazon and 400 shares of Apple which I have left to my 4 Grandsons, the Amazon I am going to let ride for my 2 sons. I have enough in CDs to last me until we die (I think) and we own a few other stocks such as Tesla and Shopify which I will cash out of if I live longer than 96 (estimated max lifespan). Anyone who thinks a beautiful woman can't be very smart is nothing more than a chauvinist anyway, and besides I owe her a lot for her invention.. I am grateful for immigrants such as Hedi Lamarr for coming to our Country and adopting it as their own, and who were willing to put an effort into keeping it as the Founders envisioned. Hope all is well with you and everyday is a good day in the market, I am pretty much through with worrying about it myself.

Yes, Hedi Lamarr was an amazing woman. And it’s amazing how few people know of her and her life story. Her beauty was both a blessing and a curse throughout her life. But it seems that today few people care about history, as they believe that history starts on the day that one is born and any event before that date is dull and uninteresting. Thank you Platon for your post.

Sometimes watching a movie again puts it in a much different light. We had dinner at a friend's house, and our kids started "Good Will Hunting" www.imdb.com/title/tt0119217/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_7_nm_1_q_good%2520will%2520hunI had remembered the overall story. I didn't remember all of the swearing, or inappropriate for younger kids humor, but it was fitting with the storyline, and the rating is "Rated R for strong language, including some sex-related dialogue" But (while not trying to ruin the movie....spoiler alert!!!) the best part that pulled it all together was Robin Williams pointing out that Will was book smart, but didn't have a lot of real world experiences (yet), and shouldn't hide from taking life risks. I really enjoyed rewatching it, as I do for many movies getting such a high IMDB rating. 8.3! And with 1.1 Million ratings. That's pretty amazing. And just to check, the movie that I generally like the best, "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1999 version), only has a 6.8 rating with 100k ratings. Spaceballs, an entertaining flick in its own right but not something that should outrank it, has a 7.1. And "The Shinning", fresh in my mind after our current snow deluge, has an 8.4, with the same 1.1M ratings. Still, it's worth rewatching some of these. And some of the times you see it with a different light, possibly after some of those real world experiences.

Oppenheimer was a great historical movie to watch. I've been meaning to make it to the Trinity site, though apparently the crowds have been large, after the movie came out, on the 2 days a year it is open. Sometime, but maybe I'll wait another 5 or 10 years. It's a bit of a trek, though I wouldn't mind seeing Albuquerque and Los Alamos again.
And I watched Season 7 of Billions, the final season. There were lots of good parts, but I agree with the ratings that the last few episodes were some of the best.

Thanks for the suggestion! I just tried moving the Movie thread. Looks like it still has to be down a level, but it seemed worthwhile to take it out of the Dungeon.
