Nice lift on AAPL and the market today. It's always nice to have a late Friday purchase be green come Monday, even if it was just a small purchase of around 2%.
It's spring break for the kids, after 3 weeks of homeschooling. It's a bluebird day so far, with a fresh 8" down here, and likely 2' up higher. Alas, no skiing, but maybe we'll get some snowshoeing in, in a safe flatter place...and one that is less used.
We played a fun board game last night, Clank. Like another recent one, National Parks, it's a pretty simple game once it's going, and both were a lot of fun, but there's all sorts of little rules and explanations that makes it pretty complicated to get going. The analogy is that this is something that Apple has handled for ages, taking something complicated and making it easy. At times that means getting rid of options, going the 7/8ths rule of planning for the masses. In the server group, where end users still sometimes needed to get to the nitty gritty, that meant making a GUI for the most used things, but allowing config files (which were often part of the open source services anyway) for those that really wanted to tweak things.

This was the reasoning some felt for the uptick today, on the CNN coronavirus live news section www.cnn.com/business/live-news/dow-stock-market-today-040620/index.htmlThat basically matched my feelings, being cautiously optimistic with the latest numbers in the US and elsewhere, but seeing that weekend numbers are sometimes funky, and knowing that one or two data points aren't enough to solidify a new trend.

Even though I originally posted this story in "Coronavirus *Information/Update* Thread - No Politics" because it related to the ongoing results of the shutdown, I decided to also post it in the daily thread because in one section of the video, with the cast of Hamilton, there are a number of the 16 persons on screen who are using Apple Air Pods as well as others using what appear to me to be Apple wired earphones. Any educated guesses on the number of Apple products out of the 16 possible windows? =========================== The application, Zoom, has gotten some bad press recently and it probably deserves the criticism. I will say, however, that this was an *excellent* use of it_and, yes, the story belongs on this coronavirus thread because, if not for the lockdown, the video event would not have happened. The entire 16-minute video contains positives stories relating to citizen responses to the coronavirus pandemic. Kudos to John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda and the cast of Hamilton for putting a smile on a great many faces around the country and, I'm sure, all over the world. Note: As I posted the video, I noticed it had gotten 223,000 👍 and 885 👎 I *really* have to feel sorry for those 885 folks. Video Only => Zoom Surprise: Some Good News with John Krasinski Ep. 2Lin-Manuel Miranda and the cast of 'Hamilton' surprised a 9-year-old fan with a Zoom performance on John Krasinski's YouTube showComplete Story => Lin-Manuel Miranda and the cast of 'Hamilton' surprised a 9-year-old fan with a Zoom performance on John Krasinski's YouTube show• John Krasinski orchestrated a surprise Zoom performance from Lin-Manuel Miranda and the original "Hamilton" cast for 9-year-old Aubrey.
• Aubrey missed out on seeing the show in Jacksonville when it was postponed indefinitely. However, Krasinski promised to fly her and her mom to New York to see "Hamilton" on Broadway when the coronavirus crisis is over.
• Lin-Manuel Miranda then popped up on the Zoom chat and said: "I think we can top that now."
•The original cast then joined and performed Aubrey's favorite song, "Alexander Hamilton," over Zoom.
• Krasinski said: "If you can't go to 'Hamilton,' we're bringing 'Hamilton' to you!"
John Krasinski organized a surprise performance of "Hamilton" for 9-year-old musical super-fan Aubrey, who was set to see the show in Jacksonville last week before it was postponed indefinitely.
Krasinski invited Aubrey onto his new YouTube show, "Some Good News," where she told him that she watched "Mary Poppins Returns" the night she was supposed to be seeing "Hamilton."
"This corona thing is a real bummer, isn't it?" Krasinski said, before promising Aubrey that when "all of this is over" he'd fly her and her mom out to New York and get them tickets to see "Hamilton" on Broadway.
"Something tells me you might be a bigger fan of my wife than mine," Krasinski added, to which Aubrey replied that her fandom was "about the same."
"I've never really seen 'The Office' or whatever," Aubrey said. "I've seen a bunch of memes on it."
Krasinski then introduced his wife Emily Blunt, who asked Aubrey her thoughts on "Mary Poppins Returns," though the youngster said she only decided to watch the sequel because "Hamilton" creator Lin-Manuel Miranda was in it.
Miranda himself then joined the Zoom meeting, much to Aubrey's amazement.
"Hi Aubrey, how are you? I'm so sorry you didn't get to see 'Hamilton,' I'm so glad to meet you," Miranda said, to which Aubrey could only squeak and nod.
Krasinski told Miranda that he and Blunt had it "handled," and were sending Aubrey and her mum to the Broadway show.
"That's amazing," Miranda said. "I think we can top that right now, though."
A smattering of popping sounds went off, and Aubrey noted: "There are a bunch of people just joining!"
And, just like that, the original cast of "Hamilton" all joined the Zoom meeting and launched into a performance of "Alexander Hamilton," Aubrey's favorite song from the show.
Krasinski said: "If you can't go to 'Hamilton,' we're bringing 'Hamilton' to you!"

I saw this earlier today and had the same reaction re the AirPods. Even living in New Zealand currently, which is usually not at the forefront of tech trends, they are fairly ubiquitous accessories. I couldn't guess the exact number on screen but it's more than enough to get the point across . My wife and I had the great pleasure to catch the Chicago production of Hamilton just before Christmas. To say it was sensational somehow seems insufficient. Lin-Manuel Miranda has produced a true American masterpiece. I don't see how it is comparable. For example, how would my kids have class with facetime? How would people do remote funerals, etc? How would a doctor post a link on social media to a discussion about COVID-19 he's having at noon? I hardly use facetime, so maybe I am not familiar, but I don't think it works that way.

It seems like Apple was an early start here, but hit the wall where they would have to make it cross-platform to move forward, and choose that it wasn't something they should get into since it wouldn't help them. Where's the monetary stream, or push to Apple specific hardware? We did a group facetime with my wife's family members back in January or so. There were 4 or 5 of us on it, and the kids really liked it, talking for over an hour. But, one family member uses an Android, so he wasn't on the call. In comparison, I had weekly work video meeting on Google Hangouts 6 years ago, with 8 people spread out over the globe. It worked well no matter the machine someone was using, though it didn't have some of the extras you are mentioning. Apple has the technology and know-how to make this work. But, remember the hard decisions, of having to say No to some projects. While at first glance I would have liked Apple to go big in this field, I don't see a huge plus for them.

“Necessity is the mother of invention”. If Apple doesn’t do it then someone will. That’s one of the great things about competition.

Steve said they were going to open source in back in 2010. Wonder why they didn't? "Now, FaceTime is based on a lot of open standards -- H.264 video, AAC audio, and a bunch of alphabet soup acronyms -- and we're going to take it all the way. We're going to the standards bodies starting tomorrow, and we're going to make FaceTime an open industry standard."

But, one family member uses an Android, so he wasn't on the call. It's not just a platform issue, it's also a basic technology issue. Facetime uses phone number (and email associated with that phone number) for invites. Invites to virtual classrooms use school email addresses. Invites to general conferences use URLs with links in them. I do 4, 5, or 6 virtual meetings every day, and EVERY SINGLE ONE OF them, I just click on the link and a window pops open with my conference. Sometimes I use computer audio, but usually I simply click on "Call me" and my phone rings. As far as I am aware, thats not how facetime works. Oh, I know they CAN do it, they just haven't. And I agree with the reasons why.

Well, since I am expected here to be contrarian, I'll just say that Alexander Hamilton is our most overrated Founding Father.
Here's some little known trivia: Aaron Burr talked Hamilton out of a duel with James Monroe - a once wounded revolutionary war veteran known to be a crack shot - 7 years before Burr shot Hamilton in a duel.
Takeaways: 1) Maybe Hamilton was the hothead; 2) A reputation for proficiency with firearms can be beneficial.
