In a new report, Strategy Analytics estimated that global smartwatch shipments grew 20% year-over-year in the March quarter to 14 million, with the Apple Watch accounting for 7.6 million of those shipments. Shares of Apple (AAPL) - Get Report rose 1.1% on Thursday to $303.96.
"Apple’s global smartwatch marketshare has grown from 54 percent to 55 percent, its highest level for two years," said Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics. "Apple Watch continues to fend off strong competition from hungry rivals like (GRMN) - Get Report and Samsung (SSNLF) . Apple Watch owns half the worldwide smartwatch market and remains the clear industry leader.”
May 7 (Reuters) - A jump for PayPal on Thursday put the Nasdaq on course to turn positive on the year, with Wall Street also boosted by hopes of a faster economic recovery following a surprise rise in Chinese exports.
Payments processor PayPal surged 12.8% to a record high after it forecast a strong rebound in payments volumes in the second quarter as social distancing drives more people to shop online.
Gains for Apple Inc, Alphabet Inc and Microsoft Corp also lifted the Nasdaq to levels last seen in early March.
Wall Street futures pushed higher Friday, following on from solid gains in Europe and Asia, as investors reacted to news of trade talks between Washington and Beijing and prepared for what is likely to be an historic reading of U.S. job losses from the coronavirus pandemic.
Top trade negotiators from the U.S. and and China — including Vice Premier Liu He, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer — held a phone call Friday, their first since signing the $200 billion Phase One trade agreement in January, that both sides deemed ‘constructive’, even amid renewed pressure from the White House over Beijing’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
Both sides “also agreed that in spite of the current global health emergency, both countries fully expect to meet their obligations under the agreement in a timely manner,” the USTR said in a statement.
The brief detente between the world’s two biggest economies eased concerns that President Donald Trump would, as he had warned earlier this week, ‘terminate’ the Phase One deal if he wasn’t satisfied that China was purchasing the requisite level of U.S. made goods and boosted stocks in key markets around the world.
However, the April U.S. jobs report, which will be released at 8:30 am Eastern time, is likely to cast a pall over optimism on Wall Street Friday as analysts’ expect the Labor Department to report that an unprecedented 21 million American jobs were lost last month as the nation closed-up shop to slow the spread of the deadly coronavirus.
Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is beginning to shift some of its AirPods production to Vietnam and out of China, according to a recent report.
Citing unnamed sources, the Nikkei Asian Review reports that around 30%, or 3 million to 4 million, of Apple's AirPods will be produced in Vietnam. Production of Apple's higher-end AirPods Pro will remain in China, however.
There is a link at the end of the column to the even more devastating Will the COVID-19 disaster sink Apple's premium hardware?, which explains why most of those here are AAPL investors, whether we know it in our heads, our hearts, or both. It is quite long, but well worth the time even if it takes a couple of reading sessions.
