Good morning. The first day of a new month and the pre-market is a nice shade of green at +$2.69 at the moment. Here’s hoping that this is the start of a new upward trend.

February Unemployment
The U.S. unemployment rate in January 2021 was 6.3%. This was both far lower than its recent peak of 14.8%, which it reached in April 2020, but also still substantially above the pre-pandemic level of 3.5% in January 2020. Analysts aren't expecting much more movement this month, as the economic recovery seems to be slowing down. See how it turns out when unemployment numbers are released this upcoming Friday.
PMIs Around the World
Another metric of economic recovery are purchasing managers' indexes, which survey executives across the business world to see if different areas of their businesses, such as new orders or inventory, are improving, staying the same, or deteriorating. The resulting indexes can be used to get a general sense of how businesses and the economy at large are doing. There are different PMIs for the service and manufacturing sectors, along with a composite number of both. A host of countries report PMIs this week, which can help us get an idea of the relative health of their economies as they recover at different rates from the COVID-19 crisis. For details of what countries report on what days, see the calendar above.
