Grrrrr The opposite of so much of today's disposable lifestyle is to have things that work a long time, and that you can fix if a problem comes up. It's not just for cost savings for the end user, but also convenience (the wait chinacat had for his iMac is similar to what many face for appliances) and simplicity, and keeping things out of the landfill. Things change, and technology improves. Places like Radio Shack existed, but even 25 years ago places like Thrifty (a medium sized everything store, bought out by Rite-Aid) had a vacuum tube tester device. This was a store that also served ice cream cones (and some still do, if you find the right store. The Cupertino/Sunnyvale one might still serve them, for a good post Apple campus visit throwback). As long as technology improves and Apple gives users a reason to press forward, the masses will push forward too, whether for faster speeds, better battery life, better cameras, better screens, faster networking, etc. But things fail prematurely sometimes, especially in portability situations. Plus there are a few wear parts that need some attention, the equivalent of a cars suspension instead of the shorter maintenance items of an oil change, or the hopefully longer timeframe items of the engine. Batteries and ports might need replacement before the item is really ready for the scrape yard, on an item that gets hours of daily use. I like a challenge, and so have done much of this myself. There's nothing complicated about it, other than it's tiny parts. I can understand Apple holding on to some of their secret sauce, but I'd like to see things be more repairable not less. Just like cars, some things void warranties on the things that were touched, or give a blamable situation. But I'd also like to see Apple parts have wider availability, so that people have a choice of going OEM or with an equivalent. Upgradability and repairability should be there somewhere in the design cycle. It doesn't need to be the only driving force, but if it is at least considered then the tradeoffs can be understood. My son bought an iPhone 8 from his cousin, and the lightning port needed replacement. That ended up needing nearly everything removed, making for a multi-hour replacement. It was a good learning experience for him.

Less than a week out from earnings!
Yesterday we had around 32 members visit. But we had over 300 guests viewing the site. It would be great, especially during quiet times like this where some in the industry are off on vacations to tropical islands and such, to hear from some of the users that seldom or never post, and to have people that have only viewed the site as a guest instead create an account.
Let's hear from you! Maybe it's "what was the favorite Mac that you have owned", or "what new features or products you would like to see". Maybe it's where you see Apple and AAPL 3-5 years from now, or some challenges they or the market will face. Or maybe we take guesses at how engineering and manufacturing will look 5-10 years in the future.
Thanks everyone!

OK I will check in. I was a member of the original AFB, when Dawn Treader was the moderator. I joined when I bought my shares in 2000 after the stock crashed after earnings. I still own every share, not planning on selling any until I am forced to when I am 72. I feel as positive now about the future of Apple when I bought in 2000. My favorite Mac was my wife's MacPlus as it introduced me to Apple computers. Shortly after that I bought a Mac 7500 which I just loved. It was user friendly, able to easily add memory, swap out the CPU, etc. I had a Minolta film scanner hooked up to it so I was able to scan my film and use Photoshop. I also made a lot of videos back then, it was just amazing what I could do with the 7500. I am currently using a iMac from 2013, have been waiting for a 27" M1 iMac. My kids grew up with Apple and they would not consider using anything else I am very grateful to Steve Jobs and also Tim Cook

In other words, if a guest comes in and views each day of this week and last week, and the two weekend threads, does it count as 1 guest or 12 guests?

In other words, if a guest comes in and views each day of this week and last week, and the two weekend threads, does it count as 1 guest or 12 guests? This info is shown at the bottom of the main page, aaplfinance.proboards.comIt says it is for a 24 hour period. Checking without being logged in, via Firefox, it doesn't show this info if not logged in. While moderators see the invisible users (a setting you can make) named too, I believe a normal user wouldn't see that. I would suspect that the guest count is either per IP, per device, or per browser. If I'm bored sometime I'll test it out, but I don't actually care that much. FWIW, I would expect it to be per browser and cookie based, so if I checked on my main browser while logged in, another browser while not logged in, and iPad while not logged in, and an iPhone using cellular, that those would count as one user, and 3 guests. If instead I was sharing cookies between some of those devices, which I assume is possible but not the default since I believe I had to log into my account on Safari on the iPhone even though I am already logged in on Safari on my main Mac. proboards probably has more details somewhere, as far as doing something like seeing how many IPs visited the board yesterday. The info is there, but it doesn't look to be in an easy to reach way. But poking around yesterday, I looked at a few current IPs and a few of people that haven't logged in for months or years. We normally only use this to check on spammers (all new spam accounts over the last year+ have been from the same area overseas). The analytics show we've been averaging about 1500 page views per day over the last month. I don't know if that includes stuff in the dungeon, which haven't contributed to incrementing personal post counts nor have been visible to guests for months now. 1500 is pretty small when divided over 300 ways, but lately most of our daily thread posts have fit on one page, so viewing all the posts in the thread just takes 1 hit, or maybe 2-3 if first clicking the main page, then the daily page, and then the actual day's thread. Alas, with no in-house advertising, it doesn't really matter much. I believe pro boards normally puts some ads up too, but thanks to some generous users we have ad-free credits for our logged in users. I won't name names, in case they want to stay private, but I will say thanks! And there we go, we have another reason to log in or create a user, instead of viewing as a guest. With an account, you don't have ads loaded on the page. If only that were true everywhere.

Its been about a year since my first post link. Don't really have too much to add to the conversation aside from realizing that AAPL is up 35% since then, pretty frickin'' amazing. I'm still amazed at how fortunate I've been to invest early and often in this company. I've got lots of (hopefully educated) opinions about all sorts of things, but when it comes to Apple, I don't claim to have any particular insight about future products or developments. After 20+ years as an investor, I simply trust that the company will execute well, and continue to reward shareholders.

Frequent lurker, rare poster here.
I latched onto this site back in the days of Ms iPad. She was the queen of the free BuCS (bull call spread). Back then there was a lot more talk of options strategies. AAPL is still a great vehicle for options due to high liquidity. And it always helps to have a feel for how the stock moves, which I think I do maybe about half the time. The other half, well...
I would like to see more of the active traders chime in here. I play with options in an IRA "fun money" account - sheltered from capital gains on all the trades and not part my core holdings. Briefly, I am constantly running a weekly double calendar, calls and puts. Long legs are deep ITM high delta a few weeks to months out. Short legs are current weekly near-the-money straddles or strangles. You can do this completely delta neutral so no crystal ball needed. Only hiccups come when the stock moves too fast. Even then I find the net is missing gains, not incurring losses.
My goal is to double the account every year. Doesn't always happen, but it's something to aim for. Compared to buy-and-hold the stock, it takes infinitely more attention. But it can be as, or more, rewarding.

Thanks guys!
It's great to hear from a few people we haven't heard from lately. Let's try to make this a daily thing from now until earnings, of hearing from a few people that haven't posted in a while.
And not to sound like an KQED donor search, but let's see if we can get 2 new accounts a day. Yes, for just signing up today, you too can continue to enjoy this wonderful content, but without ads. Even better, by creating an account and logging in, you will see where any new posts are from when you last check in. Instead of just seeing data and the last post time, it bolds the heading, showing that there are unread messages.
Add in the book reports, and the movie reviews hidden in that currently elusive dungeon, all at no added cost!
As Red Shirted Ensign would say, Make it so! Or Walter White, You all come back now, you hear?
Hmmmm, maybe that was a different show. But I have a feeling that good old Walt is out there, as a guest, just reading away in case he hear's something is going down in Albuquerque. Even if we are more interested in what is going down in Cupertino.

Okay, my two cents. When I started back in the “good-old-days” of ‘06 I was new at this investing thing and was looking for others that had experience and had been successful at it and had the wisdom and the willingness to share. I wasn’t looking for someone to tell me what to do but someone to tell me what they were doing that was working or not working for them. It was the discussion, the willingness to share. I believe that that was why the Apple Finance Board was started and why it has been successful. There are many here that are still willing to share their experiences and wisdom and I truly enjoy and appreciate their generosity. Lucky is one of those generous people and I have shared his posts with many that were wanting to start investing and are looking for a path and a company. Buy and hold has worked very well for him as well as for many others here. But what do you do if you are someone that doesn’t have the luxury of time on your side? What if you depend on your investments as a steady source of income and the aapl dividend just doesn’t do it for you? Can you have your cake and eat it too? I suspect that there are many of those that filter through the AFB looking for that guidance and conversation but find only the one conversation of buy and hold. But they also find anger and retaliation towards any one that even suggests anything other than buy and hold investing. Maybe this is why the Robinhood site is so incredibly successful as an investment site. People are hungry for information and the AFB once provided that as well as a source of community. Now it is but an echo chamber. I miss the discussion. And the buy and hold investing philosophy is great, until it isn’t. Just talk to someone that was heavily invested in General Motors in 2009. Don’t forget that we have been enjoying the longest running bull market in history, and I can promise you without a doubt that it will end someday, and it will not be kind.

I still drop by occasionally. Usually don't bother to login to may account to do so.
First started at AFB1 with Dawntreader, Tommo_UK, SNIPUS, Mace, omacvi, etc. before the iPhone came out. Been in AAPL since 2001. Still my largest position, however, I have divested over the years into higher dividend paying companies. Will be living off those dividends w/o having to sell any shares to fund retirement.
I'll check in on earnings day as usual.

There are a couple of reasons why we are buy and hold owners of AAPL. The primary one is of course that we think Apple will continue to be successful under the direction of Tim Cook; the other is the quarterly bump to our retirement income provided by the dividends. Also, it prevents us from making the mistake of thinking that we are smarter than the Market. So the rest of our portfolio is managed by professionals. So far, so good across the board.
