Like saying "The 5" instead of "I-5" or "5", it quickly differentiates where people are from, effortlessly. We also have the plate on your car. We have a quick and easy way to see who is not from around here, since we are only 5 miles from the CA boarder. Sadly, when we camped at Donner we no longer had that superpower, and so had no idea if the person in front of us might suddenly slam on their brakes or make some erratic maneuver when looking at a map or trying to snap a pic of a view. And in Apple news, the stock is apparently still in that nothingness period, which also meshes with many taking their last minute summer trips, keeping volume and often volatility down across the board. Some schools have started. Others start soon. With an hour commute each way for one of our kids, and wake-up times of 5:30, I'm missing the tele-school option already. Too bad that had its issues too.

After Jan and April earnings, the stock fell and stayed down for a while. After July earnings report, the stock has gone sideways. They bears haven't been able to keep it below 145. I'd say this is an improvement.

Having been born and raised in Santa Monica, I refer to all of the CA fwys with "the". For example: You take the the 10W to the 405N onto the 5. Then take the 14 to the 395N. Then take the 80W to get to my cousin's house in west Reno. But since I live in CO, the Interstates are "I-" as in I-25, I-70, I80. But those are the only ones that really affect CO anyway. But there are LOTS of numbered roads; like Weld County 1, US66, Hwy 7, US 36 from Denver to Boulder to Lyons. Interestingly the road from Boulder to Lyons is coincidentally both US36 and US7. And different people refer to it differently. Can be confusing.

And different people refer to it differently. Can be confusing. In CA, at least at college ~25 years ago, it was a perfect differentiator between northern and southern California. It seemed strange that it stuck so well, but I later found that news and radio reports would state it those ways. Highway/Freeway numbering is strange. 395 goes up from southern CA to WA. But going through Reno, apparently it is 580. 580 is also in the Bay Area, and apparently all of the x80's are a standard numbering for loops in a metropolitan area. I just was used to thinking of the numbering as being fairly unique, and that there was no need to randomly change the numbering mid-stretch. Looks like there is a 101 in Phoenix now, and a 405 in Seattle. But I never remember noticing that 17 from Phoenix to Flagstaff (google maps is showing it with an interstate icon) overlaps with numbering of Hwy 17 from San Jose to Santa Cruz. Oh well. I guess it just seems to me like some special and unique numbers would be retired from being used elsewhere, like special jersey numbers. In Reno, it looks like it was mostly done to save the old route as 395. You get business routes like Business-80 going through Sacramento, but "old" seems to be an add-on instead of a differentiator, like "old route 66". But "route" pronunciation is a whole different topic. (only a little green today, but I'll take a little green over a little red)

Any day we should get the verdict on the Apple / Epic trial regarding App Store rules. The judge previously said she wanted to deliver the verdict in August.

I moved from Oregon to Minneapolis last year to be closer to Artman and I am still having trouble with the road nomenclature here. Evidently land is cheap here and the only thing more popular than building highways is cheese curds. For example, I-35 runs North-South from Duluth to Everywhere Else. As it reaches Minneapolis, it divides into I-35 E and I-35 W, two interstate-sized highways running parallel. So when you are on I-35E are you headed East? No, no, no, no. These roads, intersect with I-94 which, rather than being a ring road like all other cities I know, splits into I-494, I-394, and I-694. This lattice of concrete connects Minneapolis to St. Paul but strangely enough does not seem to improve efficiency. Imagine crossing a chessboard confined to the outer edges of the squares. In addition, there are a plethora of state roads all running parallel. It is almost like Minnesota had powerful senators in congress when the roads were being laid out. With the new infrastructure bill, I am waiting for them to just fill in all the areas between the highways and be done with it.
