AppleInsider has Apple developing new home products as it increases retail hiring. “Apple's job postings, which are readily accessible through the company's website, increased 78% year-over-year in July.” Yahoo!finance has How COVID Affects Apple (AAPL). “For the second quarter earnings of 2021, Services brought in $17.5 billion, up 33% from $13.2 billion in the year-ago quarter and up from $16.9 billion last quarter.” Sounds good for the upcoming report, but the question is how it will affect AAPL. Have great weekend anyone.

I don't think it's just for the crowd that uses their iPhone as their main device. It goes back to the original iPod tag lines, such as "5000 songs, in your pocket". And then shortly thereafter, upgrades that made it so you could have every song you might have. On iPhones, it's hitting both those people that are lazy and never filter their pictures, but also those that want every picture on there. I've done the same thing. And once you ignore it long enough, it gets worse. You still have a slew of kids skiing pictures that you never whittled down, or pictures of cabinet doors and countertop samples at Home Depot that you liked. What about pics of Consumer Reports review pages on toilets, vaccums, or dishwashers. And don't forget recipes, which are harder and harder to find as you have more and more pictures. But for a few bucks more, you can procrastinate, "never" having to worry about filling it up. Maybe Apple's costs are half of current jump drive prices? At about $30/256gig for a jump drive, that would make a discounted differential of $45 for Apple to go from 256gig to 1T. But upcharging $200, they make a nice profit margin. And then make a little more again for those that want to back up all of that online. While at times I wish Apple charged less for all memory upgrades, if it helps subsidize the low end a little then it all works out. Just like in many industries, the upgraded products are where the profits really come in.

I see the storage thing differently. For many, the phone is their mobile content device. For example: 1. It is often the only device that has a legit need for one’s music library to be entirely downloaded. For example, when on a plane. 2. All kinds of people store huge amounts of photos, especially since it is their primary capture device. Other devices don’t have this need. Now there are new formats that drive up storage demand. 3. Same thing for videos. So, the phone in many ways has unique storage demands that your computer doesn’t have. A notebook or desktop machine rarely encounters a condition where Cloud services don’t work for the user. The phone is a different story.

I am sure that you are both right about typical usage of iPhones. I am guilty of considering my usage typical, which is unlikely given that for many folks their phone is their only or primary device.

I’m going to nit pick again. The phone is the only device that fits in your pocket or purse. That goes everywhere with you. It doesn’t need to be the primary device to have large storage needs.

I’m going to nit pick again. The phone is the only device that fits in your pocket or purse. That goes everywhere with you. It doesn’t need to be the primary device to have large storage needs. Again, rarely a factor for me. Being retired, I spend less time out and about than I did when I was working, and this has only been exacerbated by the pandemic. My iPhone is my least used device; its most common use may very well be as the remote for my iMac music collection while I am at home. Very few people have its number, mainly family members in case of emergency situations. My most used device around the house is my iPad. We still have a land line phone, whose value is still being the primary target for spam calls. One more possible factor: AFB is pretty much the only social networking site that I use; no Facebook, no Twitter, no TikTok. I began using internet newsgroups, mainly technical software groups except for rec.music.gdead, in the early 70’s, and quickly decided that the general chaff/wheat ratio was beyond my limits. I do realize that I am the exception to current societal trends.

Why would *anyone* not want a photo of a delicious meal? 😂 Whenever my wife makes something new for dinner...I take a photo. Whenever she repeats making a dinner I like...I take a photo. My younger son is always after me to not take so many photos because he says, when I'm gone (I'm thinking 20-30 years from now), he'll have to do through all my photos to save the important ones. I'm thinking he'll have many, many photos of food. My wife and I change our iPhones every year to take advantage of any improvements, and my iPhone is *always* the 512 GB model. My present one shows that I currently have 125,408 photos and 12,070 videos on my phone...and yet I still have 441.9 GB of memory available. I wonder if that means I won't max out on memory this year? 😎
