From my post late yesterday: CNN says that Apple has released an iPhone update due to a security issue. www.cnn.com/2021/09/13/tech/apple-iphone-spyware-vulnerability-fix/index.htmlIt says the vulnerability allowed a targeted malware piece to install or run after a iMessage, without the end user having to click on a link. Fun stuff. Sounds like it was very targeted, but still good to run an update. Now that it's known about, who knows how soon others will try to use that vulnerability. Last night my son asked if I knew about the SU. Luckily I did, and was ready. Darn High Schoolers....think they know everything. But then he didn't know that Apple is announcing new iPhones today. For school he was having to watch some videos interviewing Tristan Harris about the addictiveness of phones. I recognized the name...turns out that while his main gig was at a company that was then bought by Google, he interned at Apple. Anyways, he said one way to make the phones less addictive was to make them less appealing, by switching to greyscale. It's buried in there in the Accessibility->Display & Text Size->Color Filters. It does sure make it less appealing, but is fun to try for a bit. FWIW, I decided to run the update last night, via downloading on my iMac. It was over 5 gigs, and speeds were slow, so it took a while. I expect we're on the cusp of iOS 15, expecting Apple will announce today that it is coming out this or next Friday. But I decided to upgrade to this 14.8 version.

Looks like a sell the news day. Striking how many days at 11AM CA time the stock declines. No 27 inch iMacs. Next year now?

I can see why Mr. Market is underwhelmed. "Nothing new, incremental updates, no Big New Thing". We've had 13 years of incremental updates to get this year's iPhone. How'd that turn out? Excited for the rumored Mac event next month.

Over 2% drop from start to the end of event. Remember for next year.

Must admit, apart from the pro’s camera/video enhancements, seemed like a non event. Watch particularly disappointing.

a) incremental event. nothing revolutionary. b) glad to see the update to the iPad mini. c) tired of continually hearing "this is the best ____ ever." Well, I would hope so. d) did not like the sweater look on Tim Cook. It made, IMO, a low energy event look even more boring. e) even though I like learning about the new products, not sure if an event was needed for today's announcements. f) sell the news action on AAPL. you would think I would have known this by now. . .

Must admit, apart from the pro’s camera/video enhancements, seemed like a non event. Watch particularly disappointing. Longer battery life, better screen (more brightness, flexible frame rates), tougher/harder screen, and always a new faster processor. And double the memory on the low end, with 1T available on the high end. It's not nothing. But even with the cool video things they can do, the remote streams don't tend to keep my interest as much, which wasn't helped by my iMac needing a reboot after the video stalled, likely due to low memory. I do get a little tired of everyone emphasizing so much with their hands. Someone must have gotten low marks a few years ago, and so they now tell everyone to go big and wave them about. We'll be ordering a 13, likely either a 13 or a 13 pro. My wife will like the camera, dramatically better than her 8+ or my 11. The rest doesn't really matter much, but better battery and more memory are always good. 5G might help, but probably won't matter at all, since 90+% of use is on wifi, and the rest is on places low on the list to be upgraded. But the stronger screen will be welcomed if significant, since that was the only negative of her current iPhone. 3 times. With a case, and normally a screen protector too. All after never having issues with past iPhones. All good stuff, but in the end it does everything a little bit better than past ones. People will continue to upgrade, and some people will even migrate into the ecosystem. But there might not be anything by itself that is so amazing that it makes someone decide to upgrade a year sooner than their normal timeframe. OTOH, there are some that buy just for the color, and some that end up using the "supercomputer in their pocket" for more and more of their computer/internet/everything time, all while having a little more money in their pocket and a little less uncertainty in the world. It's hard to know offhand how well it will do in the mass market that is well beyond those that have been wondering and speculating about features for months. Lucky 13!

It's not nothing. ... Lucky 13! Agree that it wasn't nothing. It reminded me though of a new car model. Upgrades, new color, better fuel economy, some "revolutionary" tech.

People rarely talk with hands person to person these days. But the talking heads on TV must on hire consultants who teach they to talk like first graders doing motions to a song. Trump was the worst, nothing political, just saying his movements were stiff and artificial. Bloomberg TV is disgusting for this and I have given up watching the other channels. That is just 1 reason.
Should include a taser in the phone to combat urban crime. Crime in Oakland is out of control.

The iPhone Pro's Macro photo function itself will get me to upgrade.
As far as price action, I don't think there was much sell the news involved today since we just had a $157.26 peak a week ago and subsequent selloff due to IMO an over reaction to the Epic ruling. To my eye aapl pretty much tracked a bad day across the markets with a BTD setting in the last half hour. You better be both quick and lucky if you're going to trade these events with any kind of serious cash especially with current market volatility.
Just my 2 cents...

That editing of the new kind of “cinematic” video - which is recorded with a backing depth map and which itself is Dolbyvision 4K HDR video - can be done on any of the iPhone 13s; and, I suspect, on M1X Macs running an updated Final Cut Pro which will incorporate the ability to shift focus this way in the UI timeline. That would require the new, unannounced as of yet, M1X-ish Macs that will have the equivalent of the A15 (only “better” running inside of them.
This will be revolutionary. And only possible to do with this combination of new (and future) Apple products. It’s a fusion of unique hardware and software features not to be found anywhere else.

What also strikes me about today…
All iPhones 13 have the same A15 and photo and video advanced capabilities at the core.
Both Pro models improve in this by having the same “better” camera module and cameras. No difference now in the cameras or sensors or stabilization between the Pro and Pro Max, unlike the somewhat artificial (and annoying, infuriating) differentiation by removing some of the “better” things from the smaller Pro cameras in the previous generations. Now, too he only difference between small and large Pro is the screen size and battery life. You don’t need to buy the larger one unless you really REALLY want the larger screen. You don’t miss out on anything else by getting the smaller Pro.
The Pros also get the adaptive refresh up to 120 FPS. And I think the upper 1TB storage limit. And different casing and colors. I’ll have to re-look at the specs to tease out any other differences.

Excited for the rumored Mac event next month. Agree, all incremental, and to the market and average punter lacking the zing of the 'One More Thing' days. The market clearly is looking for something like a new category. Having said that AAPL will sell a Metric F### Tonne of all of this 'incremental' stuff. I'm ready for a an M1 30"(wishful thinking) iMac - would have liked to have seen that by now. Will buy the watch 7 (a new product category for me) Don't need a new phone or iPad yet

It was interesting to see specific reference to particular industries, like iPad mini in aviation and health.

You can buy any M1 Mac (or later) and plug it into an Apple Pro Display XDR over a single thin braided TB4 cable. I’ve been using that configuration (yes with the Apple stand) for the past few days, and it’s awesome.

I'm a designer... but I still don't need something that good. the 5K iMac with an iPad Pro sidecar'd works well for what I do.

I believe that in the last decade or more, when there's been a new product line they have pre-announced it by 3-6 months. I remember the iPad. And the iPhone too...I happened to be on a jury with a higher up iPhone manager during that in-between timeframe. I think the Watch was that way too. It seems that's the only way to beat some of the rumors these days. I think all were still somewhat known, but it still helped get out the hype a bit. At the same time, since these were new product categories, this gave time for people to decide they wanted it, and didn't bite into other Apple sales since it was a new category.

I think it is revolutionary in another way. Apple invested A LOT in developing their own chipsets. First for smartphones and other mobile devices, and more recently for personal computers. And a lot of design effort went into those chipsets, to make them very efficient, powerful, and flexible. I wonder if this particular feature is using something inside the chipsets that other brands don't have, and won't have for quite a while? History has shown that when Apple does some elegant design work to add a feature or make their product better, the competition tends to react quickly, but usually not with their own good design work, but rather with brute force (think of things like 12GB RAM in a smartphone to speed up app switching). And perhaps this kind of thing, heavy video processing, both live and during editing, can only be done with enough clever design in the chipset? Maybe it's a feature that the competition can't copy in 6 to 12 months. Certainly without extraordinary expense and penalty on battery life (Ha, they could* put a fancy Nvidia or AMD video chip in their phones. LOL!!!) * This is an obvious joke. They can't do any such thing due to power requirements and heat dissipation of those kinds of chips. (I forgot to mention, earlier today I sold some puts, mostly 2+ years out, heck, if someone is willing to sell me shares at a net price of about 100 in 2 years from now, I'll be glad to take those shares off their hands.)

Not too long ago I was fantasizing about the Lytro tech being reimagined for moving image capture - but I really envisioned someone like RED, Sony, or Arri bringing a form of it to their high-end camera systems. I honestly didn't expect Apple to incorporate it into the iPhone. That they've managed to do so is truly stunning. Working in film production, I can say this is an extraordinary leap forward.
