I don't like the subscription model on a physical device, but I just heard of this with something else. A friend got a set of ski coach sensors, something that goes in the footbed of a ski boot. It then analyzes what you do, such as how much pressure you are putting on it. I don't remember it all, but the important part came down to pricing. Given the expense of tech toys, I could see this being $500, which depending on the number of units they wanted to sell they could still do well. I'd compare it to the bike power meters of 15-20 years ago, that were $1k (vs now Strava can give a decent guess). Anyways, this was a week and a half ago while driving, but I think my wife said it was $100, but then had an annual subscription of $199 for one year, or $299 for two years. (EDIT: I don't think there was any personalized training in this service, so it really was low cost hardware upfront, and then software as a service, ongoing) It just seemed an interesting way to do it. But with Apple, it could also be a way to ship a good product upfront, but not have people worry as much that a much better product is coming as version 2. That said, I wouldn't worry about it too much right now. Just like rumors in general, so much can change before something actually ships. But there are some hardware subscriptions out there, including going far back to the first GM electric cars.
