I have often wondered why Carplay does not access the OBD computer. Imagine that instead of the "Check Engine" light, the display told you the code and explained it. For that matter, why not have it give you a path to tell you how to fix it? I am thinking of an online combination of Chiltons's and YouTube videos. If you are not a DIY person, it could give you the closest dealers and repair shops along with rates and the cost of parts and even make an appointment. Everything needed to do this exists. It is just a matter of writing the code
Apple must be flooded with requests for features. Their current policy is "Send the idea, we won't acknowledge it or thank you. Now go away." I can only hope someone there reads this and runs with it.
This does not qualify as "car talk". The theory is that the algorithms scan for signs of euphoria.

Bud777, I so very much agree with you. But, then again, how many people know the difference between a screwdriver and a wrench anymore? Waste of time.

It is just a matter of writing the code There is a gap there, and most companies have traditionally had a gap between the stereo/entertainment system and the electronics running the car. The problem is that this gets more difficult to keep separate, especially with multiple screens, such as a dash screen and possibly a heads up screen. On our new Toyota Sienna they have a whole section in the manual about what features you can modify, and where you go about doing that. Some are still "dealer only". Others are set in the dash screen. Many are set on the "audio screen". And then there is a difference of when you can change these, if you can be moving or if the car needs to be going slow or even off. It gets complicated quickly. There are also OBDII connectors you can get, plus software, to look at and set other things. On a recent F150, there are some things you can set up, but a few less options. But there are ways to update the software beyond normal allowed over-the-air updates. And then there also are OBDII connectors and software you can get to set up some things. Sometimes this is just enabling automatic folding mirrors after upgrading to them, or changing what lights can work with each other. It's at that stage of just barely being useful, being able to do things like set up one remote click to unlock all doors, or the time that lights stay on after you get out. But while a couple former years of the F150 let you use the truck software to set up a new key (saving a bunch of money), they show the option but dropped the feature on mine. At some point it comes down to if you have one CPU that does it all, or do you have one very robust one for the most important things, and then others for things that aren't as critical. There are trade-offs, but it's similar to having multiple brake lines, but then not having fail safe brakes. Instead, they add a different system of a parking brake, using a cable instead of brake fluid. Does a Tesla or Rivian (wow, we see them all the time now, a huge jump up from 2-3 months ago) still use a bunch of different CPUs? I'd expect there are guarded systems, like one system telling the other to go faster, and then the second system actually doing it. I'd call this second one the engine control, but in a EV that would be a motor controller I guess. It has always made sense for Apple to cast a wide net, getting to more of the market than just making their own vehicle, similar to how Apple TV can touch more systems than if they made a stand-alone TV. We'll see what happens, and it might be multiple strategies, but there is both the entertainment system and a potential self-driving system. Apple seems to be going after both.

Human Engineering was my special interest in my career in Computer Science. It is why, so many years ago, I found PC's so hard to use compared to the Mac I had at home. I was even embarrassed at the time to mention at the office that I used a Mac. Sincerely hope that Apple does not lose this focus. I sometimes wonder that, when I use my iPhone how chaotic it often seems.

I was even embarrassed at the time to mention at the office that I used a Mac. Sincerely hope that Apple does not lose this focus. I sometimes wonder that, when I use my iPhone how chaotic it often seems. Apple's whole DNA is whittling down the choices to make something that is easy to do, and yet can do complex things easily. That's not going to change. Jony was mostly in hardware. It could be that things will change some there, but really all of this stuff is built into the culture of Apple. As I've said before, I personally hope that Apple at least reconsiders some of the design compromises it has made, going just a tiny bit back towards the upgradability and fixability side. But I'm not holding my breath.
